ok, this is my plan:
I'm using sphere to create a pokemon game, this pokemon game is supposed to use all the graphics from previous versions (tilesets), the graphics for the pokemon will also be available for the people to choose I hope. The battle system will be improved, there will be more pokeballs (some that before only existed in the anime) and all the stuff exclusive from Gold/Silver added up to the stuff from the rest of the pokemon games (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/FireRed/LeafGreen and hopefully Pearl/Diamond when those come out), appart from that it will be completely similar to the engine on the GBA, with a lot of new stuff and the most important part of all: free. I know there's always gonna be these guys that use the engine and will not give credit, saying it's their own, but if I really succeed in creating it, every true pokemon fan will know the real creator of it. Considering sphere uses JavaScript and I dunno much about it I would ask people to please tell me where can I find good tutorials to make battle systems and other stuff in sphere, as well as just common javascript tutorials that don't have anything to do with sphere. The only programming languages I know are BASIC and Java (I know it doesn't have anything to do with JavaScript :P) but I bet I will learn fast. Some features I thought about the game:
- Situated in a new region called Oregon, I might include others like Johto, Kanto, etc later
- Morning, Day, Evening and Night System (Some pokemon only available at night while others only available during day (the rest of them will be available at any time)
- You will be able to catch all pokemon.
- Weather System (will give advantage/disadvantage depending of the pokemon in battle).
- Normal, Shadow and Shiny pokemon will be available (I'll probably have to work on the Shadow one's sprites or maybe just make sphere darken the normal sprite).
- Shadow pokemon will exceed the rest in Special Defence, Attack and Hit Points while Shiny will exceed in Speed, Defense and Special Attack.
- As pokemon born, live and breed it will be possible for them to die as well, legendary pokemon don't die and semi-legendary will leave an egg before they do so which will ensure they keep going on through generations.
- There will be more virus in addition to the PokeRus, some might even kill the pokemon.
- The trainer will need to eat, as well as its pokemon, otherwise they will be weak and... :\
- The game will use all the other pokemon GBA games graphics.
- Pokedex, Movedex, Berrydex, Battlechart, Pokeballdex, Pokegear, etc will all be available.
- Maybe later I will put the contests working as they are a part of the game mechanics I quite don't understand.
- At some point when u are really advanced in the game, such things as IV calculators, etc will be available.
- I hope I can create a Fly with two stages, before you finish the game it will be the normal "fly" where you choose the city that you want to go to and the pokemon will take u there. The second stage (after you finish the game) the character will appear over a black pokemon with wings (like when you use surf) and you will be able to hover over the maps (no collisions) and land anywhere allowed.

As I said before, it's hard but not impossible, it will take time. But the more people involved in the project the faster it will be ready to be released.

Why did I choose Sphere instead of Gamemaker or RPG Maker XP?
Reason: because 1. gamemaker sucks for rpgs, 2. RPG Maker XP uses Ruby scripting (which seemed to me as being more complicated to learn and less flexible than JavaScript), RPG Maker XP already has a predefined Battlesystem and team system that I don't quite like, Sphere supports bigger tilesets and more layers than RPG Maker XP, etc, etc
The only thing I found in RMXP that I didn't find in Sphere is the Autotile thingy (that doesn't mean it's not there), but that will probably not be a problem.
This doesn't mean I don't like RPG Maker XP, I love it, been using RM since the 95 version :o
I just think sphere will be better for this game.

Any ideas, etc u know what to do :)

As I said, I'm starting the project, so there's no screens yet, that's why I asked for some java script tutorials so I can start putting the game more pokemonish :o
As soon as I manage to put collisions, and some other problems I will post some screens. :)

lol, I will have screens soon, I dunno why it would be locked this is supposed to be about "Game Development" if the game just started being developed how could I show screens, anyways, if you want screens I'll map smth quickly and show it although it's nothing amazing might keep people in a good mood :P I read some tutorials about JavaScript and I'm getting really good with it so soon the game will start having a bunch of cool features, I'm currently working on the Trainer ID Number, it will use the date on the computer (year, month, hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds) to generate a ID number (it will multiply all of them and use mod 100000 to come up with a 6 number ID.

It's a requirement to have both a story and screenshots, so we have something to go by. Had you read the rules you'd know.

OK, here's a simple screen. I'm trying to work out the reflection in the water, right now it appears everywhere, I'm trying to put it only on the water:

This looks like it could become a good game. Sphere makes very good RPGs. I'm looking forward to it. Really am, seriously. It might be the beginning of something great. Just don't give up k.

I finally managed to make the reflection appear only on the water, I'll try to change the oppacity and show it here later. I won't give up cause I'm tired of seeing a lot of people making very good engines and then keeping the secret for themselves, I hope to share this project when finished so that anyone can add to it or just make new maps, history, etc :)

As I said before as well, if anyone is interested in helping me I'll be on msn, and here :D

That's what I'm trying to do, but before that I'm trying to make the player being able to move like in the pokemon games (only north, west, east and south (not the rest: southeast, etc)) and also making the player move by tiles instead of pixels and whenever not walking the animation stops in the one where the character is stopped (both feet on the ground). I might look at some projects made with sphere that can do that and learn how to do it :)

notice that as the scond part of the message is the last part that is going to show up the arrow disappears which means there's no more text after that ;)

hey dude nice screens. menu looks a bit weird but ur gonna fix it... lol. sphere is the hardest thing in the world. I GAVE UP AFTER 5 minutes! lol.

lol, I didn't give up because it was easy to learn JavaScript and it lets me do everything that RM doesn't :o

Anyways, menu is fixed now, tomorrow I'll post the screens.
As for the story, I still have to think about it. Right now I'm more interested in getting the engine ready, after that comes the easy part :P

Menu now shows the trainer name instead of "Trainer":

If you press ESC it will go back to the menu and then if you press again it goes back to the game :D

As you can see it looks really cool, now each city has it's own "map coordinates" and name (notice the name and the red square with the location ;) )
with a simple change in the script I change only the name of the city and look how it appears in the screen:

TheAbsol (so far the only person who's been helping me with the project *cough*) made me a function to turn the npc's towards the player every time we talk to them :F

driver? you mean the rendering thing?
if that's what you mean I use: sphere_dx8.dll

As for getting good enough, 2 days ago I didn't know sh** about JavaScript and Sphere, now I'm doing better every minute that passes by, if you read the tutorials that I gave you and some others you will get really good in no time, as for helping, feel free to add me to msn: rpg_man@hotmail.com and we'll talk about it :)

my tileset is a compilation of a bunch of tilesets I found (johto advance + kanto + hoenn), it is still missing some tiles, I will put them on it and I'll put here the link to download it later :)

*bump* just want to tell everyone I didn't give up on this game, just been busy with some other stuff.

Progress:
Pokegear now shows the clock but for some reason I can't make it refresh every one second (still working on it)
I'm trying to find out a way to alternate maps without using warp, u know like in the pokemon games u go from one map to another without loading, only walking from one to the other u don't actually see any warp taking place.

Why don't you make an invisible warp and some fake background showing the route you're warping to? Or would that work? No idea how to use Sphere. Try to make a "pod system" like call of latios. that always amazes me.

V.nice game you've got going here, you don't see many games in sphere, mainly because people think it's too hard.
Anyway, your menu system looks great, trainer card and pokégear menus look superb!

I actually don't like the pokegear design much so I might change it later.
I'm now working on the game and I made some improvements:
- A Trainer ID Number is created based on the time the game was first started, the possibilities of someone starting the game in the same year, month, day, hour, minute, second and millisecond are ultra small and now it displays the Trainer ID Number on the Trainer Card.
- I might add an option to the message function where you choose which game font you use and if it's male (blue), female (red) or null (black) that will change the color of the text

it's a kind of update, I remade the pokegear, now looking much better and I changed the screen resolution to 240x160 like the GBA games

Here they are, the ultimate screenies XD

- New screen resolution (GBA) 240x160
- New PokeGear with Phone Menu
- Due to screen sizes Oregon was divided into two regions: Demitri and Oregon
- FRLG font added (no shadows yet)
- Now trainer card shows the Trainer ID Number that is created at the beginning of each new game the player starts.
- Maybe there's more but I forgot ^_^

Would you prefer the battles with the GBA graphics or would you prefer to see the trainers and the pokemon (overworld) having a battle?

And it works better than the GBA graphics one!

Thats some good work,the only thing I can see missing are the pokemon catch rates and tameness values.
Oh and IVs and EVs for the team pokemon.

I'm messing with Sphere, but, i'm a real noob... read the tuts, and it Javascript is much more direct than ruby... Now, I want you to write a "Getting started on your pokemon game Tut" for us... lol I don't even know where to start... That is why most ppl go for RMXP and stuff, there is a base to build on. But, it seems that sphere is better in that there are no hidden superclasses that you need to watch for... :P

I might do some when I have time, I was planning the bag, battle, etc systems and I came up with an idea, considering there will be shadow, normal and shiny pokemon and there will be tameness/happiness and pokemon have age and die at a certain point, depending on the way your pokemon are treated and how many shadow vs shiny you have there will be a Goodness Vs. Evilness bar to see if your a good or bad guy, if you have enough evilness you can go to a place where team smth (I still have to think about a name for it) gives you pokeballs that you can steal pokemon with, then after you win a battle you can pick 1 or 2 pokemon from the oponent and steal them, then you can either keep them or give them back to the base and get money for them. Being a bad guy you will also be able to convert any shiny/normal pokemon into a shadow/normal one.
If you are a good guy you can convert shadow/normal pokemon into shiny/normal and if you battle a bad guy (like a member of the team whatever) and win you can get 1 or 2 of their pokemon and take them with you, then you can keep them or give them for adoption at a pokecenter or sell them to the day care center :\

I might come up with some more ideas later, you can also give your opinion :P

The hard part is the battle system, but I have it all planned as I said and holidays are near, so if I don't go away for the 2 holiday weeks then I can stay at home and make it. The part with stealing pokemon, etc is not that hard at all :\

--EDIT1--

I had another idea that will be quite simple to make after the battlesystem is ready.
There will be a bunch of cities where there'S a place reserved to build a Gym, when you finish your game and become a pokemon master and your bored you have two options, either go to the Elite 4 for free, sit there and wait for random trainers to battle you (remember your a master :P) or you can go to one of these towns and buy a Gym, then you can go inside the gym, choose your pokemon type (you know, fire, water, etc or maybe even "only shiny" or "only dark" or even random types (you just use your normal team)) and then random trainers will come in, they normally will have one or two pokemon that are effecient against your type and their pokemon levels will be around the average of all of yours so that they can have a chance against you :P

Now, I know you're thinking "this guy has a lot of ideas but it is gonna be hard as hell to make that" you're wrong, the battle system is the main part, then creating random battles, etc is pretty easy :P

just so that you know CBS and CMS are the hardest things u ever get to make for a pokemon game, then you have mapping and events/triggers, etc that are not hard but take time ;)

so just give your opinion on both ideas (the one of being good/bad and the one of having your own gym/working at elite 4.

considering you can be those things I could later add more jobs like working part time at a pokemon center :D, be a cop :S, a thief, work at the daycare center, pokemon training (people lend you their pokemons so you can train them and then they pay you for it), etc

if you would like to see a job give ideas cause jobs and the decisions you take are gonna play a big role on this game. :)

I added the 20 frame option thingy that is available on emerald, so now if you go to options you can select the kind of frame you want for the menus, etc
