POKéMON Hidden Depths
A Phoenixgamez Production

It's baaack. After months in hiatus, it's returned and bigger and better than ever.

-Story-

Quatzal, a Pokémon, according to legend, so powerful that it has the ability to generate earth rattling storms. Thunderstorms so destructive that they threatened to eradicate huge areas of land in one go. People and Pokémon alike lived in eternal fear of feeling the wrath of the colossus being. Legend states that it required the combined strength of the four elemental birds, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres and Psiquatro, to halt the rampaging of the "Serpent of the Sky". In a monumental battle in the skies, the four birds managed to overwhelm and defeat Quatzal. Residents of a village near to where its vanquished body lay decreed to build a temple in which to seal away the powers of the Pokémon once and for all. A gifted craftsmen carved an intricate puzzle into the temple's entrance as to only permit those capable of pentetrating the puzzle to have access to the interior of the behemoth's seal.

The heroic victory of the four birds caused them to believe that they were now free to rule over the world with the same force and destruction that their defeated foe had used. Rivalries developed between them instigating friction between all four birds which evolved into full blown hatred. Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres became involved in numerous intense battles with each other, concluding in no winners at any time. Psiquatro, the more majestic of the four birds, became disgusted with the constant conflict between them all and fled in shame of its one-time comrades and allies in protecting the world from chaos. One last mammoth battle between the birds concluded in yet another stalemate. The result of this final battle was that the birds became too weak to fight again and withdrew from each others sight to recuperate.

Hundred's and hundred's of years passed with nobody solving the puzzle and the temple eventually got lost in the wild of nature. The witnesses of the "Battle above the Land" had passed on the story to their children who also passed it onto their children. The story, losing its value with each passing generation, ended up being considered a myth by experts who were incapable of justifying any existance of a Serpent Pokémon with such power.

Meanwhile, a new terror had found its way into the lives of people and Pokémon. The nefarious Team Rocket had expanded in calibre under the guidance of Giovanni. Developing machinery of advanced capabilities, they became a serious problem. Unable to be persecuted by the tiny police forces, Team Rocket's plans of regional domination were becoming more of a reality. Pokémon stealing became more prevalent which inevitably led to young Pokémon trainers becoming too intimidated to take their Pokémon and travel the region to complete the Gym Leader challenge and enter the Pokémon League. Because of this, it became a lot more enticing for young trainers to join Team Rocket, thus expanding their regional network and giving the young trainers a massive advantage in the Pokémon League.

Rumours also began to surface of rumblings around the location of that 'mythical' battle which occurred centuries ago. With Team Rocket wreaking havoc on everyone and the worry of something a lot more powerful lurking somewhere, being a young Pokémon trainer isn't an attractive prospect..

-Main Characters-

~Damien~ The male hero http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/TrnrDamien.png

Damien is a 15 year old boy from Farebloom Town. Damien has always been interested in Pokemon and from a very age showed that he was gifted in handling Pokemon. He spent a lot of time at Dirk's lab helping to tame and befriend all the wild Pokemon that Dirk had brought in. Damien struck up a particular bond with the first Pokemon Dirk ever showed him. It was always Damien's dream to travel the world and meet as many different species of Pokemon as possible. However, a few years ago, Damien's father walked out on him and his mother. Consequently, Damien's mother couldn't cope with the distress and the strain that it had caused and suffered a breakdown. Damien was forced into becoming a stronger, more independant person and cared for his mother as well as taking responsibility for the general running of the house. Fortunately now things are starting to get back back to normal with Damien's mother being back at full health and looking to the future.

~Madison~ The female hero http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Erika.jpg

Madison is a 15 year old girl from Farebloom Town. Madison's ambition in life is to move from Farebloom Town to one of the big cities where there is more excitement. Madison's interest in Pokemon began about 4 years ago, shortly after her mother died. With her father also distraught, she turned to Pokemon for comfort. She began spending more and more time in Dirk's lab to try to get herself through such a difficult time. While spending so much time in the lab, she struck up a life long bond with one particular Pokemon. Now, both Madison and her father have moved on and put their past pain behind them and have looked to the future and decided to try to achieve their dreams.

~Azzy~ http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/TrnerAzzy001.png

Azzy is a sassy, energetic 14 year old Pokemon trainer from Dayflora Town. She admires all of the great Pokemon Trainers that have become famous and is desperate to replicate the fame and fortune that they have achieved with their Pokemon. Fame is her biggest goal and she will do anything if she believes that it will help her become more famous, even if it means taking shortcuts or making poor decisions and character judgements. Overall, she is a nice helpful girl, even if she is a little bit too headstrong and determined for success.

~Mace~ http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/TrnerMace01.png

Mace is a calm, intelligent 16 year old wannabe Gym Leader from Johto. He believes he has the necessary attributes and Pokemon skills to become one of the greatest Gym Leaders ever. Mace is very methodical and is very often the voice of reason or the saviour whenever Azzy or Kyte have problems or get into trouble. He has a talent to look at situations from many different perspectives to find the best solution. He also has a strong affinity with nature and considers anyone that tries to destroy any part of nature a sworn enemy. He is also very interested in ancient Pokemon ruins.

~Kyte~ http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/TrnrKyte.png

Kyte is a cute, playful 12 year old Pokemon lover from Heyspark City. Her idol is Suzie, the great Pokemon breeder. Kyte loves the cuteness and inner beauty of Pokemon and wants to become a Pokemon breeder to help all Pokemon to become as happy as possible. She also admires Azzy's determination and considers her a great role model and tries to base her attitude on Azzy's. -Demo News-

Expect a small tech demo in about a weeks time. The demo will contain at least a fully functional Grungewater Town. For those that don't know or remember Grungewater Town there are 5 screenshots of it in this post. Basically, it's a run down town with decrepid buildings and grime infested trees and water. It's your job to rebuild it. You rebuild the houses, cut down trees to supply the wood for that, clean the trees, bushes and water as well as dig and lay a new path around the town from a choice of three different tiles. Also expect to see a working battle system, complete with working battle animations, with the custom graphics and a couple of new Pokemon.

You can find all of the completed pokemon and details on the website: http://www.phoenixgamez.com

Claire

It's just for rebuilding Grungewater -you use an Axe, a Shovel and a Hose in that town.

Oh, Dawson, would you like to write an article about your game for the fangame wiki? *points to sig* It'll be nice to have at least 10 games on it, and I'm asking the best ones I know (Then PT, haha)
(And yes, this message was copy and pasted. It's basically the same message to everyone whose game I like)

Hey Dawson, nice game. Do you mind if i use that grass background in my game. It will be edited and be credited to you.
My guess is he will give a big no, unless he didn't make it. It looks a bit like the official 'screen picture' from the game if I remember correctly. The worst thing about RM2k3 is getting an effective battle system working. Other than that, it's way better than RMXP.

I remember when you started this game. lol It has continued to get better.

One thing I don't like: Since when is it realistic to carry around all this stuff like a Bike, all that stuff in the back, shovel, axe.. etc... I mean I know other pokemon games did it. Can't you improve the system?

Claire
November 21st, 2005, 05:46 AM
No way Flameguru -it took me ages to draw all those battle backgrounds o.o; no one else can use them.

Barry, his game won't feature a bike, just the ability to run. With the Axe, Shovel and Hose, they are found in a Toolbox you carry around Grungewater, so they're not items you have in your backpack around the whole game or anything.

Thanks for all of the comments guys. Here's a small progress update:
About 60 out of the 65 new Pokemon have been sprited by Claire.
9 out of 12 Towns/Cities have been completed though some have undergone a major revamp, particularly the first three towns.
All but one of the battle backgrounds has been completed. A different background will be used based on the area that you are, for instance: Field, forest, beach, underground, cave etc.
You can check out all the new Pokemon at our site, www.phoenixgamez.com. Here's just a few for those of you too lazy to click.

Great spriting:D

Claire
November 24th, 2005, 12:59 PM
Budige boy, do you mean you've sprited your own version of my pokemon sprites? All concepts and new pokemon are copyrighted to Phoenix Gamez, so you're not allowed to use/create/edit your own version of them.

It's just a tech demo showing Grungewater and the basic battle system, Sharpedo, so it won't have those just yet.
And thanks for the compliment

Sharpedo
November 24th, 2005, 01:23 PM

Claire
November 24th, 2005, 01:32 PM

Yeah, and the battle system in the demo will include custom battle animations

Sharpedo
November 24th, 2005, 02:51 PM
coowl that's all I can say:D:D aren't y'all afraid that it will lag? I mean with all those switches and events just for one extra feature.

Claire
November 24th, 2005, 03:40 PM
He's been testing it a lot and it doesn't lag, so it's all good.

I redid the electric hares -i didn't like their old design, so here's their new forms:

Sorry, my dear!:(
I didn't know who's they were, I am so SORRY!! Anyway, I thought it would be cool to practice scratch pokemon spriting with such beautiful designs.
Anyway, I will delete them ASAP (unless you would like them sent to you then deleted:nervous: ).
Oh and not to start an arguement, is it not the same as drawing the original pokemon, which are copyrighted to Nintendo?:\
Yet people still make their own version! And use them!

Claire
November 25th, 2005, 07:05 AM
Copying our pokemon isn't the same as copying Nintendo pokemon. Nintendo have given their views on fangame and have said that they're ok with them as long as proper credit is given. We, however, don't want our pokemon to be used in other people's fangames since we didn't have a whole team like Nintendo did, it was just the two of us and it took a lot of time and dedication to come up with their designs and sprite them.
That's like saying you can copy someone's artwork and, as long as you give them credit, it's ok to not ask them. Everyone feels differently about others using their artwork -i personally don't like it.

Yeah, the demo is still expected to be ready for tomorrow. It's still pretty much beta stage and there are a few minor errors and glitches that I haven't fixed yet but the core gameplay is in place even though there are a few things missing. This release is mainly to receive feedback from the players on what they like, don't like and what they think needs improving etc.

Okay guys, the demo is now on the site and has been since Sunday night but PC was down so I wasn't able to inform you.

You can download it from our site, PhoenixGamez.com (http://www.phoenixgamez.com/index.php?pg=hddemo) along with instructions about how to play the game as well as what's included in it. Also, read the readme file to find out what will be in future releases.

Comments and criticism of the demo are welcome as always.

WHOA, I always loved this game and I just happened to stop by PC to find... a demo. Wow, I'm checking it out and will edit this post with feedback later. I'm the 29th downloader ;)

Edit: What happaned to my avatar O_o

Edit Again: I couldn't play it, heard there was only two maps so I gave up. I would like to comment on your game though. The game seems to feature a tall tower, yet the name of the game talks about depths which means "the condition or quality of being deep." So unless that tower is in the deepest valley in existance, it's not really 'deep'.

Claire
November 29th, 2005, 11:53 AM
What do you mean you couldn't play it? There were instructions on how to play it on the demo page.

Sharpedo
November 29th, 2005, 12:35 PM
Hey I played your demo:D Great progress has been made:D I really like the battle system:D I had no problems with it I did notice some irritating bugs though with rebuilding Grungewater Town. What happens is that after I've done something like cutting down trees or cleaning the water with the hose I can't move hardly or anymore I think it's caused by the events you laid around the map

Overall it's cool:D

Neo-Dragon
November 29th, 2005, 06:20 PM
Just played the demo. I liked it. Your battle system was nice. A few bugs in terms of not erasing pics (like when I press the cancel key, some attack names will still be left) - but was pretty well done.
The rebuilding the town idea is a really neat (get it, neat.... ah I'll shut up) idea. I'm surprised noone else taught about it. I went crazy, cutting down every tree I could. The player could make up an entire mini game in his/her head, so it adds alot of replay value. Seriously, good job with that.

Eh... Already pointed out, movement issues here and there, which can be fixed.

Overall: It's nice to see other coders using RM2k3. Sprites are well done (good job claire- you did (most/all of)them right? ). Iron out your bugs and you've got a winner with this one. Well done Dawson.

Barry
November 29th, 2005, 07:32 PM
What I mean by not able to play it was: I didn't care enough to take an extra five minutes to figure it out because I'm busy. Since it only has two maps, I'm not going to go download WinRAR when I hate WinRAR anyway...

Hey Dawson, Let me be honest because we are friends..
It was terrible. There were bugs and errors everywhere.. It felt like I was playing a game made by a complete noob to rm2k3.. I expected a little more after what, 1 and 1/2 years of work?
1. I couldnt walk into any buildings
2. The menu was obviously not included because I saw an rm2k3 standard one
3. The map, though well designed was not very good. There were too many un-inhabited places, basically just different patterns of trees.
4. The graphics were good but graphics do not make up a game
5. The battle system looked like it had been spliced together from my old one but edited somewhat to include animations. (It had all the telltale signs of my battle, not just the gfx but even the old errors)
6. I don't know what anyone else was playing but I couldn't cut down any trees and I only found a single npc.
7. Not all of the battles had sound and my own attacks were hurting me occasionally.
8. The textbox system was just the standard rtp one.. A little dull...

I don't really think the demo which I played had any real work put into it
I appologise if there was some kind of error on my end, but that demo was not what I'd expect from you at all..

No real offence was meant, I was just stressing how rtp the game was.

It was only a tech demo, hence there being no buildings that could be entered, npcs, menu etc.
He has created basically all the maps for the game, but only wanted to show the two most original areas. The Grungewater Town, as i say, took over 500 switches just to create (it took a long old time) so it was the main part of the demo. I take it you didn't read the instructions on the demo page which explained in detail how to use the tools such as the Axe and Hose..that's a pity really.
He's been working on the Pokedex and menu since, but just wanted to get out a small tech demo for now showing Grungewater.
Both areas are uninhabited because that's the point really -Grungewater is a deserted town you rebuild and then sell on to people once complete, and Fossil Island is a prehistoric land you can explore.

For the past couple of weeks he's worked really hard, and as i've said Grungewater took a lot (and i mean a lot) of work to complete. It's a shame that you didn't read the instructions and play Grungewater as it should have been played.

Bugs, I understand since even he knows there were some ones he didn't work out, but it's harsh to attack on the basis of there 'not being much to show' considering you didn't play the demo to it's full capabilities, and considering that he's completed all the maps and a lot of coding etc. but only wanted to show Grungewater for now for the sake of originality.

I didn't mean any offence at all, Dawson is my friend.. I was giving my opinions on the demo.. Didn't he ask for them? I took a quick read of the demo but didnt really see anything significant so I just played it, I was in a hurry. I appologise if I was too "harsh" but I was just telling you what I thought about the game I played.
I played the tech demo again and tried the axe, it was quite fun. I still encountered some little bugs but other than that, it was great.
Once again, I appologise if your feelings were hurt or you felt that dawson's would be.

Ok... I playe throught the demo and it was great! Some little bugs here and there like:

1. When using the hose(for anything, but that I mean the dirty trees and water) the game freezes or gives some error.
2. There is a tree that make you inmoveable when you cut it(this happens with only one tree)
3. When a house is built the "maker" is still there, but you can move underneath him.
4. When you build a couple of houses the place where wood is stored disapears.
5. When building more houses at once you can "store" more wood.

MAybe there were more, but I can't remember them now.

Hey Dawson, glad to see you back in Game Making action. I'll try out your demo a bit later, good luck with this.

Great game Dawson. I could tell that you used KM's CBS, and added in the attack types. XD My computer doesn't support Grungewater for some odd reason, so I was only able to try out Fossil Island. The CBS worked great, and I had a nice time trying it out. Dawson, I was also wondering if I could use the attack type graphics in the game.
