"A Light in the Ice"

I remember the day the ice came,
It came down like rain, turning the world into glass
The day after Christmas, our house plunged into darkness
The power lines being no match for silver crystals

For one whole day, our world was dark
We were bored--how could we play with our gifts in this night?
My dad flicked on the switch in my room--this, he said
Was how we would know there was light

Hours dragged on-what were we to do?
We searched our rooms for something to do
To tide us over until the light returned.

Monopoly, chess, backgammon; we played them all
Every game that we owned, yet our spirits were low,
Just when we were about to give up, it seemed
From my room came a yellowish glow!

The light had returned, and life returned, as it may.
Our house had returned to normal at last...
But still to this day, I never forget
Our day of darkness we lived when the ice came.

This was inspired by the time an ice storm hit my area Christmas 2000, knocking our power out for a day.
