View Full Version : Greatest Hip-Hop artist of all time!!

Who do you think is the greatest hi-hop artist of all time and why?
I personally think that it's Tupac because of the way he used lyrics and how true he was to his style of rap. He also showed two sides to him, a gangster criminal side and an affectionate emotional side. He wasn't afraid to show his emotions and his feelings, he was also a good actor and wrote some good poetry.
I'm sorry if your particular favorite is not on the list, I just chose them because of the list MTV made. Also please don't choose more than 2 artists, only if you really have to.

I'd have to say Eminem. He expresses his emotions so vividly, and his love for his daughter is sweet. That goes to show you that gangsta rap isn't always about crime, drugs and that-other-thing (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say that 3-lettered S-word on this forum).
He may not be as fast as Twista, but while rhyming, he keeps up with the beat and never loses his cool. Besides, he has awesome songs.

Tupac was the best for me, better than the rest.

Tupac, although I don't know him that much, I think he had so much bravery but it just wasn't fair that he died quite young.

I would say Jay-Z and Enimen.. They both rap really well.. And lots of Enimen songs are really meaningful..

I'm not going to say that any "gangsta rapper" is the greatest hip-hop artist "of all time", because I don't believe in them. I'll nominate the Hilltop Hoods, a crew from Adelaide, Australia, who are one of the groups at the forefront of the blossoming Australian hip-hop scene, and back up their fresh sounds with positive lyrics rather than "I'm gonna kill everyone".

If you guys think that Eminem's songs are meaningful then you obviously haven't heard his first couple of albums. He's one of my favorite rappers, but his songs used to be so messed up and stupid.
I'll vote for Tupac, Jay-Z, Eminem, and Other (50 Cent).

I must tell you that I have all the songs of Em's debut album Infinite and I'd have to agree with you there. That's why people hated him cos he sounded like Nas.
Other than that, yeah I think 50 Cent's awesome too. I just think that he talks about s** too much.

2Pac, definitely. His songs have inspired me to listen to hip-hop and kept me from suicide during my middle school years.

Eminem's old songs were fairly stupid but of late he seems to have mellowed a bit and they're more thoughtful, although songs like "*** Like That" are still totally stupid. I do enjoy the ones where he's singing to his daughter, though.

I agree, songs like that were kinda stupid and funny, but it's a break from "OMFG Imma gangsta I'mma kill y'all mothaf**kaz!!!!" songs.
But yeah, songs like "My Dad's Gone Crazy", "97 Bonnie and Clyde" and "When I'm Gone" are sweet, except that the latter one's sort of sad, when Em raps about Kim's "wrists are bleeding" and about ignoring his daughter "Daddy where's Mommy? I can't find Mommy, where is she? I don't know go play Hailie baby your daddy's busy. Daddy's writing this song, this song ain't gonna write itself.I give you one underdog and you gotta swing by yourself."

But at least it has a happy ending, when he and Kim get back together. There's hope, which is more than you can say for a lot of gangsta rap tracks.

Do you realise that the start of '97 Bonnie and Clyde Eminem "kills" Kim and dumps her body in a lake? Or do you find that sweet?
Eminem's first songs are pretty lame now, but back when they were first released they were outstanding. And they were unique compared to what popular at that time. But his music has evolved massively, and he has now become the best rapper, song writer and possibly producer in the world.

I wouldn't call him the best songwriter in the world. As much as you may like his songs, I still think that there are a lot more rock songs with more meaningful lyrics.

Sorry, I meant rap songwriter. Just forgot to specify which. I don't think anybody can top Eminem there. The only person I know who could've rivalled him was Tupac.

What I don't like about 2Pac is how they're still milking his estate for all it's worth. It's his mother more than anything - I wonder if she actually cares that he's gone, because all she's been doing since he died is to release albums to cash in on his name.
Maverick
February 8th, 2006, 05:15 PM
Yeah, I know what you mean. So much for letting his legacy rest in piece with his soul.
Another thing I hate is the way he's mentioned in so many rap songs, mainly by rappers that never even knew him. I find that rather disrespectful, I think they're doing it just for popularity.

Dude, what I said didn't have any resemblance to Kim whatsoever. I meant the parts from the song like "Baby your da-da loves you, and I'maa always be here for you. No matter what happens, you're all I got in this world. I would never give you up for nothin. Nobody in this world is ever gonna keep you from me. I love you".
The communication between daughter and father is what I find sweet. I don't give a darn if Kim dies.

I don't think Afeni is milking Tupac for the money. Only two of the albums released after his death(not counting the 7 Day Theory) had assets going to Afeni and one of them was a soundtrack for Resurection so basically it was just Loyal to the Game. All of the others released after his death had most of the money going to Death Row Records and Suge Knight. I don't think Eminem is the best songwriter, he's good but not the best. Gangsta rap has always been violent, I really like how Nas raps in his songs about the gangsta lifestyle, he doesn't go out and say "I'm going to kill you *****es!" he raps about his actual life and that's different, in my mind Nas is the best lyricyst out of this group but what Tupac did will never be forgotten and that's what makes him great. Like I said before, he had two sides and wasn't afraid to show either one.

February 10th, 2006, 05:30 AM
Yes, they do seem rather odd, especially on Loyal to the Game. Eminem just changed the speed and rythm of 2pac's voice so it could match the beat of the song and that really messed with the overall sound. He should of made beats that matched 2Pac instead of trying to make 2Pac match the beat.

I say Eminem.
I chose Em because of how he adds a new meaning to hip hop. Its not all gangsta rap or any of that, and his music really reaches out to people..if not making them hyperactive then it'll do something like make them feel for it.
And his music just plain kicks a-double snakes.

My vote went to "Other" and that "Other" I would have to say is MIssy Elliot. Not because of her lyrics or songwriting, but for the doors she's opened. Her videos are quirky, strange, and downright weird. Something hip-hop didn't really have. Now you see other artists (Ludacris, Snoop, etc.) embracing the "hey, this is kinda neat to add different stuff once in a while!" deal.
Geometric-sama
February 12th, 2006, 03:05 PM
I'm not really a fan of Missy Elliott (or, come to think of it, of rap in general) but she gets some respect from me because she was one of the first female rappers to really go mainstream.

Hands down.. Nas. Over the years since his first album(Illmatic), he has just been so consistent with the way that he flows and talks about his life.. unlike so much of the garbage on the radio and TV nowadays within the hip-hop community... Emenem is seriously up there but IMHO was much better in the 2000-2003 era.

Although a do think that a few of the artists on here are great should be considered in that list...
For me, I would have to choose The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Whodini, Run DMC and Kurtis Blow. They all laid the foundation for Hip-Hop and brought into the mainstream.
To me, These men are THE Greatest in Hip-Hop.

How are they not hip-hop?
To me and a lot of other people hip-hop is a culture, a culture which consists of music, fashion, and other things. These are all hip-hop artists to me and all of these people say in their own lyrics that they are hip-hop artists. All of these guys here are rappers and rap music is a part of the hip-hop culture. What I'm trying to say is that hip-hop is the big picture and other things, like rap ,are part of the big picture.

Rap is hip-hop, gangsta rap is hip-hop, go research hip-hop, rap and gangsta rap are sub-genres of hip-hop.
Of course there would be a contest if Eazy E was in here, he didn't start rap or hip-hop, Run DMC put hip-hop in the mainstream before Eazy or NWA. Eazy started gangsta rap, some argue that it was Ice-T, but he isn't the best IMO. I love Eazy E, he's an awesome rapper and he has some of my favorite songs in his catalogue but he's not the best IMO. To you there would not be a contest because that is what you believe, not everyone believes that. I also didn't put Eazy E in here because I didn't make this list, this was on an MTV list of what people chose and I agreed with the main choices.
I also want to say that I voted for Tupac for the reasons I said earlier but I also want to give Nas a lot of respect, he is a great lyrycist and Illmatic is a great album that I just can't stop listening to. He would be up there with Tuoac but Tupac is still better to me.
