The best anime series that I have seen thus far in my short life would have to be Wolf's Rain. It has a good story but there are also a lot of little jokes, some bad humor and quite a bit of action to go with it. The first time I saw the last episodes I cried like a little girl, but I have the series so its not so bad now. But the best movie I have seen in the way of any anime is actually tied. If you get the chance, watch the 4 part miniseries Macross Plus, Its four hours long but its really good, and then there's the famed Akira, which is another awesome movie.

Since I can't recommend movies, I'll just jump right into the series...

Jack O'Neill's Anime Series Recommendations

- Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop: They speak for themselves.
- FLCL: A straight-up laugh riot, in my opinion. It can be hard to follow at times, but that doesn't detract from its innate funniness.
- Any Gundam series: They all deserve watching. SEED, Wing, and the original Mobile Suit Gundam especially.
- s-CRY-ed: An underrated action series that has the slightly dubious honor of airing on Adult Swim. Slick animation, a decent storyline, and quite a few kickass fights.
- Samurai Champloo: If it was made by Shinichiro Watanabe, then it's gotta be good.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG: Slick animation, equally slick action, great music, an engaging plot, and one really hot heroine. Need I say more?

I'll break mine down by series, to the best that I can.

Series
Comedy
Azumanga Daioh- This has to be one of the funniest show's I've seen. The animation is pretty good and the storyline (girls going through highschool), blends in good with the comedy going on.

FLCL- Look at Jack's info, I agree with him fully.

Action
Dragon Ball/Z- Just recomending the first two. GT is ok, but is nothing compared to Z. Down right action and one of my favorites of all time.

Sailor Moon- This could be in romance too, but some of the fighting is actually pretty good. I've managed to look pass the whole 'this is a girls show' thing, when in reallity, what really is a girl show or a boy show.

Gundam- Just about all of them, again, look at Jack's comment about them.

Movies
Sailor Moon R/S/Super S- Though like the DBZ movies, none of them work with the storyline, but that don't matter, they all are pretty good.

Ghost in the Shell- This started the whole movement to the series a few years later. I recomend this movie.

Kiki's Delivery Service- I actually watched this when they showed it on Disney. Its a really good movie about a young girl that discovers her powers. I recomend this one too.

Erm..I don't want to list animes people really know of.

Full Metal Panic! - Sort of COMEDY/ROMANCE, but there are scenes of Robot, or Arm Slave fights. A series you couldn't possibly get bored of. (Reading/Watching)

Girl's Bravo - Watching/Reading..pretty good.

Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicle - Has characters from most of CLAMPs wonderful works, including a few new characters.
All of the characters are different from what their "debut" animes had shown.

I would really recomend you watch the un-dubbed One Piece, it has an excellent story and plot, the dub sadly doesn't do it any justice at all...

Movies I recomend you see are Cowboy Bebop and Kiki's Delivery Service

Well in my opinion some of the best shows are:

Escaflowne: Great if you like fantasy, it also has very interesting characters with cool pasts and a nice fantasy/mecha blend! A touch of romance and a bit of comedy! It's one of my all time favorite shows!

Full Metal Panic!: Who can not love this show??? It's hilarious!!! And action packed!! Tons of romance, and awesome mecha!

FLCL: This show is crazy and kinda hard to follow, but **** is it funny!!!

Gundam Wing: This is the ultimate mecha show! It's action packed and has a believable storyline. The characters are also awesome!

Fruits Basket: This show is kind of a girly show... but it's very funny!! There really are no words to describe Fruits Basket... it's just a great show!! :)

And the BEST anime movie EVER is:

X!!!!! The tv show wasn't as great, but I have to say that the movie is just unbelievably good!!! I love it!!! :D

Here are some other good ones:

Spirited Away: Watched in Japanese with subtitles is definitely preferrable to the english audio because the English voices are pretty annoying! But it's a great movie!! :)

Princess Mononoke: What can I say? It's a classic, a must see for all!

Ninja Scroll: I never saw the tv series, but the movie's really good! A bit of sexual content in it, but it's not too crazy... I really enjoyed the movie over all! :D

Anyways, I hope I was somewhat helpful! :D

Personally, I would strongly recommend the Japanese version of One Piece. Both its storyline and plot are truly spectacular. Not only that, but it has a *mostly* great cast of characters, outstanding fighting scenes, and can be quite humorous at times. Be sure to steer clear from the dub, though. 4Kids really did a number butchering the original.

As far as movies go, I would have to recommend Spirited Away. Its magnificent storyline, beauitiful animation, and awesome characters are what keep me watching the film time and time again :D

Samurai X

For a series I would recommend Rurouni Kenshin, Fullmetal Alchemist, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Ghost In The Shell: SAC 2nd Gig.They are all great animes but I should tell you to stay away from Rurouni Kenshin after the Kyoto Arc, episodes after that are fillers and drift away from Watsuki's story and the manga. Yu Yu Hakusho is also good.

For movies I recommend Akira, Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Bebop Movie, Ghost In The Shell, and Spirited Away. They are all good movies, I especially like Akira.

In my opinion, the best anime series is a tie between Wolf's Rain and Escaflowne. ^^ I own and have seen every episode of both series and they are simply magnificent. =D The best anime movie for me is most likely Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. :33

That site really has the best anime reviews on the internet. I pretty much agree with all of them. They're fun to read, too.

Series: Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cyborg 009, Kikaider/01, Zeta Gundam

Movie: Akira, Spriggun, Grave of the Fireflies

Take out Cyborg 009 and Kikaider and add in Rurouni Kenshin and Inuyasha and you would have my list perfectly XD

Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favorite manga...the anime, not so much. It ended on a really low note with those fillers. Inuyasha's...Inuyasha so that's enough of a reason for me not to like it. Don't really like anime that make the final episode seem like just another episode.

Samurai Champloo is my all time favorite...
