Well, like on mU, You can edit your name in the userCP, but once every [insert date here].
Why can't we do that here? I mean, it would save the admins the trouble, and the members ^-^
It's just my thinking, SO sorry if there's already a thread like this, but I didn't see one ._.

Well, all I can say, that I'm using this hack on my forums as well and it's a real time saver.
It would certainly be very useful here.

The only problem I can see with such a system is what if people changed their name to something inappropriate. From what I read on that link, I did not see a way of controlling that.

I don't think that would happen too often.
The hack also includes the option to allow special usergroups to change people's names instead of letting them change them on their own.
So the whole staff team could take care of name changes, not just only the admins.
That could be helpful too.

PC is a huge forum. People with that kind of name change powers would change their usernames almost everyday, causing mass confusion. The 6 month limiting with the staff keeping a track of everyone changing usernames is a good thing, for especially when someone'll go flame somebody, then go under a different username and change their themes almost instantly and run around like some different person.
Endless possibilities, including bad ones, so PC's name changing system is perfect the way it is now.

Well the hack also allows you to set a limit on how often people might change their anme (for example every 30 days etc.).
When you hover a user's name you are going to see their previous names.
There is also an addon which displays previous names in the user profile.

We use the manual system so we have a good control method over that.
Of course, adding such a function would alleviate our stress and result in the need to get rid of the thread. However, we wish to have control over new members, as they have a seperate 3-month period since joining before they can change their names, while there's a six-month for subsequent changes.

Yeah... it is off topic o.O
And, that is a good point, for the new users.
Why should they have to wait -Three months- anyway? Why can't they have the name they want? o.O
And also, six months is a while to wait to have a member to get their name changed... again, Just meh thinking! ^-^

Well, if it didn't have a long limit, people would probably just keeping their username tons of times and it would get pretty confusing as to who was who.
But, on mU, it does have a 30 day limit on each time you can change your name, but if that's not long enough for PC then you could change it to however it suits the board. That way, it would be easier for name changing and PC could still have the limit.

They can't have their name change so soon because they just chose a username when they registered, so they should stick with it for a while. Oo
We have a lot of members, so I can see name changes taken place often getting very confusing, and the method mentioned in this thread wouldn't make anythings easier.

Even with the hack having the ability to limit changes, the profile things'll just make users get random ideas like, lets say, to have a huge list of usernames in their profile. It'll almost be an abuse of the system.
The staff want control over new members with their names, and the 3 month limit is there so the new member actually uses the username they registered with for a while, before applying for a change.
And also, six months is a while to wait to have a member to get their name changed... again, Just meh thinking! ^-^Same thing applies here, it also goes with making up your mind to get an username you're going to stick with. See, you can't just change usernames here whenever you feel like it. >.< Usernames aren't playthings .. at least here they're not.

Well not exactly. Every time a member changes their name, we note it in their usernotes. So, a staff member who changed the name would have to write an entire sentence of the change, most often including the previous name, the latest name, and the date and time the change was requested/made. So essentially, while this freedom alleviates the staff from doing the whole job, a member can change the name and have a long list nonetheless regardless of a manual or automatic system. Also, the manual system has the benefit of giving a list of changed names that members can actually view to track who changed to what name when the request is handled in that thread - which we make easily accessible. Anyway, it's up to all of the community staff as a whole to make such decisions. The changes will be made effective if we agree with the system.

I agree with Max. You shouldn't register in 30 seconds. Take some time over your username, it's an extension of you. If you could change your username every day or soemthing, PC may as well be a group on MSN.
