Hello everyone. =D

I'm slowly learning the basics to hacking and of course one of the basics is spriting. I'm attempting to make my own sprites for my own games (when I fully comprehend the art of hacking, that is). I'd like to share my attempts with you and recieve some.. constructive critism! :3

These sprites are drawn freehand in MS Paint. No base is used for anything. xO

Fyrim (complete):

New (name suggestions welcome!):

They're really good! The outline could use a little more differents colours (especially the new one). But except that they're really good! I really like Fyrim. I seems like an original idea. Keep up the good work (:

^_^

I don't think I've grasped the proper way of shading yet, that's always been a downfall of mine. How do you do such precise shading with your sprites?

Well I can't really draw from a scratch so there's often really good shading on the real pkmn sprites ^^.. For example th lizardthingy (Basilick) is a composion of Ivysaur, Marowak and Charmeleon. But I'm working on a spritet right now that I have to do the shadow myself. Basicly it is to decide from where the light comes from, much like shading. When it's the lightest shading try to use a lighter outline; otherwise it will look somewhat wierd. But it is really vary much like normal shading(:

The Basilick is very well put together. :3 I could only identify the Marowak shaped head though.

Finished the new thingy. :3 Just needs a name! ^_~

you need more than two examples for a showcase, spritecase, but other than that your sprites are well done.

They are nice. Though have to agree. Need more then just two.
Show some more range ect.

Though i have to say they are very cute.

Fyrim is very cute, I really love the design and palette. Your 'new' sprite is ok, but the colors seem a bit odd to me (perhaps use yellow/red/orange for the paws instead?), still its a cute design none-the-less.

Ooh I didn't know.. or else I'd've waited til I had made more before starting a thread for them. I'm going to try to make at least one every night. :3

Here's the newest one, then..

The Seletu is really great, I love it (:

But onw thing, the unnamed pkmn seems a little bit wierd in it's icon, but otherwise it's great (:

Wow. Very good sprites!! Not perfect...but very good!! Fyrim could use a good bit of work, especially on the back sprite. Your outlining could use some work as well. Try mixing in some different colors on the outlines, even a little black to add more depth. Your shading is pretty good, but the light sources don't look consistent in places. For instance, you have a light shade on the body of the main sprite for Fyrim, and also a light shade on the back of the head. This makes it look like there are two different light sources and can be confusing to the viewer. If you have any questions about what I mean, feel free to ask. Overall I really like these though. Your anatomy is very good!! Keep it up!! XD

I really like what you have done :D Really well done, I really do hope you do more ^^; I see you've coloured the outline the same or two similar colours, Which I find effective :D Nice work.

Mostly because I don't think I'd do a very good job at it. ^_^; Not freehand, anyway, and that's what I'm focusing on. I'll give it a shot, though. xP

yah ur right about the free hand but theres nothing wrong with editing them just dont make it so noticable what their base is

Kitty Face
April 19th, 2006, 5:40 PM
Actually, the fact is, I don't do a good job of editing them. XD; I find it easier to freehand and do the colouring and everything myself than I do to take an image and alter the colours.

So freehand it is! And I've already started. :3

cool beans then...
I cant freehand accept a little on my computer so i just edit...
Cant wait to see free handed trainer!

o i just thot of what u could do to that new one http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/kitty-face/sprites/pokemon/noname.png that one make his head a lil bigger so it overlaps the top of his body then it wont look deformedish!(its head looks like it behind its body)

Kitty Face
April 19th, 2006, 7:10 PM
Well here's my first attempt at a trainer sprite freehand..

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/kitty-face/sprites/trainers/trainer01.png

Nope.. not that good.. ><;

xMeteorxStriker
April 19th, 2006, 7:25 PM
i think it is very good well for a free hand (it doesnt look pokemonish enuff)

Kitty Face
April 19th, 2006, 10:06 PM
*sigh* You're right.. I'll probably need to do some editing to it.. or I may just scrap it.. I don't know yet. But before I try another trainer sprite I'll need to do some editing to the Pokemon you pointed out.. not only the head now, but maybe a few pixel changes to the tail as well. :3

Thanks for your suggestions/comments/encouragement guys, if you have any ideas for new Pokemon that you don't mind me using, just send me a PM or post and I'll see if I can draw it (cos I'm not that good XD).

For your free hand trainer sprite, it only needs a few simple adjustments to be more pokemon'ish.

-try darkening the outlines
-contrast the hair tones more
-increase all the hair tone's saturation
-darken the shorts shadow tones
-shift the left (<) lower leg to the right (>) 2-3 pixels and straighten it out
-thin the upper left (<) arm by 1 pixel (its a bit fat)

I apologize if this sounds harsh ^^U, if you can try it, you will improve alot =D. Also if any of it doesn't make sense I could do a step by step (using your image) to explain it better. Doing original sprites takes alot of guts, so my hats off to you for trying...if i had a hat that is ^^U.

Not bad at all for your first scratch trainer. The major problem I see, is that the left leg is odd looking. Almost like the leg is broken. Pretty good though for your first try!! XD
