View Full Version : So.... does the term "veteran" exist for these forums?

DragonTrainer
June 3rd, 2006, 06:11 PM
Well, for those who aren't too sure what a vet is, it's pretty much someone who has been around for a long time, well known, etc. etc., so I was wondering if the term was used here and whatnot, so -discuss-

Also, sorry if this should go in the voting forum or something, it's been a long while since I've been here, I'll remember to go re-read the rules sometime ^_^;;;

Some of the staff members are veterans... I'm sure all of the Staff Admins are veterans and I've been here ever since 2002. Being a veteran gives you an insight to what has happened and if you're a staff member, you can easily solve problems that have occured before. It's experience... XD

I think the true definiton of a vet here...would have to be someone who was around when it was Poke Elite 2000 or something like that...but hey what do I really know...

I'm quite a "vet" in the Pokémon community, being modded in two of the most popular forums (at the time), and I've been around these forums since late 2000; can't say I'm a veteran here with only 20 or so posts though, and I doubt I will be. It's a title earned when you've been around during the early days of a particular place. It's not something I willingly brag about though, as I moderate and take care of many forums with thriving communities that aren't related to Pokémon.

Though the actual definition of a veteran, legend, etc. Is suggestive. It all depends on your opinion and what you feel the definition of a veteran is, afterall.

Pokemon Elite 2000 is a Pokemon website that, as far as I know, has nothing to do with PC and probably never did, unless it was once one of the sites PC was the forums of.

I head a "group" here at PC called the PC Veterans ;) It's for people who were also members of the old PC, before the 2003 relaunch. :) If you're interested in joining just go to your group memberships page!

A PC veteran... Nice topic DT. Shockingly I'm having a hard time on what to say.

What is a PC vet? Is it one that's been here a year? Is it one that's been here two? Or how about old enough to be a member of the old PC?
I consider myself a PC veteran, I've been here over 3 years and been on the Staff almost 3 years (meaning I've been on the Staff longer then most PCers). Yet I can count 9 or 10 Staff that's been a member longer then I have (I don't say Staff because only Erica has me beat on that).
In a lot of ways PC vets are ones that was a member of the old PC (and to me, them are what I call the "Old PC Vets"). But to me PC vets are ones that's been here long enough to know how PC was ages ago. My account got cracked over two years ago (April of 04) how many was here at that time? I bet not many is around to remember that happening. To me, members that old is PC vets.

Sadly PC vets are fading away. Members old enough to remember the old PC, members old enough to remember when 22sa was this super high poster, old enough to remember back when we were still but a small forum. I'm not saying vets are better then the new members. I'm just saying I can't talk to someone about the old PC that joined last year, I can't say "Hey, do you remember when the one above was first started in OC?" or have a talk with them about the old PC.

Naminé
June 4th, 2006, 11:08 PM
Naminé thinks that there is no exact, clear-cut definition of a veteran. The definition changes according to time. To those who are most likely earned their way to be a staff already, all of them have joined at least for a year or more, and has visited something labeled as the "Old PC" wherever this legendary forum exists (most likely, she guesses that "Old PC" ceased to function already...) In their eyes, someone who is a veteran will have to see back to the time of PE2K, as mentioned by Mr. Arcanine.

Yet, to the next generation, someone who is an eye witness for the opening of new PC maybe enough to be a veteran already. And to the next, someone who is present since Jan. 2005 maybe enough. This pattern will most likely carry on and on, changing in definition as time goes by.

That is why in real life, Naminé always see another adjective to go with the word veteran, or the name of a certain event, so everyone can understand which time period or which event is being used as a "focal point" to define a veteran~

So, what is PC's standard accepted focal point that is to be used to define a "veteran?"

Allstories
June 5th, 2006, 11:23 AM
It's hard to define the term veteran here, because on most message boards the vets and newbies are very diversely established groups, but PC is huge, so it's harder to get people to become as well-established and tight-knit, and a lot of people just end up leaving after a while.

I remember when I was one of the top ten posters...

I remember Dratini was the top poster until she left after a fight with a Super Moderator, who left shortly after as well.

I remember getting Kwesi to de-admin Alakazam.

I remember tmbjr's constant Brock-like love of all women from Pokemon.

I remember Eusine606's first chain story.

I remember Jake was once Eusine606.

I remember being a mod (after Kwesi kept forgetting about me for months).

Oi, the memories. I've been here since December 2002.

Edit: Hmm, this topic made me go back to the reference library...

Hmmm ... in general, anybody who has been a faithful member of PC for a considerably longtime and therefore has acquired a fair amount of knowledge of the forums' functionality due to the experience, would be a Veteran in my eyes. I believe there are different kinds of Veterans too. You've got your grahpic artists, your fan fiction authors, and so on...

Although they may not know much about PC as a whole, if they are significantly experienced in their own affairs then I'd consider them Veterans too (with respect to their professions so to say).

I've been here since forever. Never faithful enough to come on daily, I've seen what has happened to PC.

I was here when people were nice, when few were hating and when people weren't so full of themselves... I remember lots of mods helping and not dogging anyone who was new.

I don't know what has happened to PC, or how it has changed. I don't know if anyone remembers me. And I don't care.

In my opinion, PC has changed. For the worse. People who used to come on are hardly ever seen.

It's just sad.

It's funny how people who have join dates of "Oct 2003" claim to be "vets" nowadays... It's kind of fun... especially when they say that PC has "deteriorated" and the likes. Pfft! As if they've been here before. I've been in PC ever since Dakota still has that Charmeleon avatar and always ends his posts with "BOO YA!" I've been in PC when Cas spam attacks PC with her cronnies with "Kamikaze" all over the place. I remember when that idiot Admin Alakazam made a WWE forum without consent of staff. I remember when 22sa gave us the daily stats of the forums... and especially the old DCC. The golden age DCC. And especially when "The One Above" is the second most popular thread next to the DCC. I also remembered when there's only one thread for DCC... ever... ah the good old times.

I saw him on just a few weeks ago, about all he posts in is the WD forum now.

I remember a cool dude called Sapphire_Latios lover or something like that. Scotty (aka Sapphire Latios aka "Scotty") comes on MSN about every day. Still funny, I wish he'd come back to PC and show the newbies what it is to be funny.

It's funny to see how many was around back when me and SA had the same avy (and everyone got us mixed up), or back when we had the "Class of 2003" on Moddings, or back when the old PC had all them DB errors, or back when everyone used PC avys, or back when Kwesi was still around.
The past is past, it's fun to remember all them things, it's fun to just sit down with another old member and talk about things that happened long ago. But there's something many forgets, it's the past, no need to live in it. Sure I liked the old PC better, but this isn't the old PC. We can't go back to how it was years ago on the old PC.

I have been here a while. Heck I rememer when there were no such thing as a RPsample. Or when plots were only 2 sentences and they had dang near 100 post, if not more. I am trying to remember what got me to PC to begin with. I think I was looking for pokemon stuff on Yahoo and i got a link here. I have been a member ever since. I miss the good ol' days. when PC had a few hundred members instead of how ever many we have now. A whole heck of alot. If PC was still like that, Reputation would still be here.
My greatest memory would have to be there wasn't as much flaming spaming. I did it way to many times before I learned. Or when I was temp banned for a week(not saying why). I almost died! I couldn't go to PC for a week. But hey, I still love it here. I always will, even if the newbies PM to be your friend and when you say yes just to be nice, you never speak to them again. LOL Well, I can't imagine leaving PC.

;_; Oh wow, this thread brings back SO many memories. Am I the only one who remembers the Ikonboard version of PC now? ._.; I know Dakota was there (or was he?) but practically everyone else has gone since then. ><;

I'm basically as veteran as anyone can possibly get at PC. I joined it back in July or August of 2002 when it was still just an Ikonboard and back when the slogan was "e are working on a better slogan." I kinda forgot about it after summer ended and then, after my friend Cas' forums closed and she migrated here, I followed her to the forums--now vBulletin-based--after she said she had a fanclub (I was curious--that seemed like such a crazy idea at the time). The ONLY reason I'm here right now--since I wasn't planning on joining--was because I recognised the play on the slogan from the Ikonboard I'd joined earlier and found it hilarious. :X That's why I'll never support its change. xD So I've stayed here every since.

... January 2003, but I was a lurker since December 2002. was my register date. I miss the old PC. That used to be fun. Cool memories. I see some familiar... faces? Usernames, let's say that, I see some familiar usernames.
Oh snap! It's you! o__O I haven't seen you in ages. Seriously...you definitely count as veteran in my books. XD How've you been!?

By the way, I know so few of you remember Cas, but she asked me once that if she's ever brought up again here, to tell everyone that she apologises for her actions. So there you go, I've told you all. XP

after my friend Cas' forums closed and she migrated here, I followed her to the forums--now vBulletin-based--after she said she had a fanclub (I was curious--that seemed like such a crazy idea at the time). The ONLY reason I'm here right now--since I wasn't planning on joining--was because I recognised the play on the slogan from the Ikonboard I'd joined earlier and found it hilarious. :X That's why I'll never support its change. xD So I've stayed here every since.

Ahahaha, YES. *high-fives Lightning* That's pretty much why I'm here, too. I e-mailed her asking what was going to happen now that her forums were closed and she told me everyone had come here.

Haha, aww. Cas and her forums were pretty much my first experience with internet drama, so all her nonsense was a big deal for me back then. It's pretty funny looking back, though. I remember being on the opposing side when half of her forum uprose against her to speak out against her apparent tyranny. I remember the anguish and rage I felt when she managed to get that site taken down even though virtually no one posted there. I liked how so many of her allies were so minion-like and they seemed so wrapped around her finger all the time. Cas was quite a character.

*high five* 8D

I missed all the e-drama back then. I was never, ever around for it, always having something else to do on the days it happened, heh. It's become so common nowadays, so I miss back when we'd only have the really big drama and then none for ages and ages. o_o Now it's a daily thing. DX

Heh, good times, good times. :P

I wouldn't really consider myself a veteran, but I have been here for 2 years, so...yeah. I remember Dakota's Charmeleon avatar, and BOO ya! and all that...man...good times. ;P

Too bad I've been here this long but I've got two-month old members that have more posts than me. Ha. I just never have too much to say up here, I guess.

EDIT: Uhh...new online indicator? What the heck is that thing? XD

EDIT 2: Gah, I'm slow. Sorry for the post...didn't realize how old this was. Just saw it had a new post...XD

Prior to today, the last post made in here was at the end of June. And since it's now August, that means it's been inactive for over a month. And the one-month revival rule does still apply...
