View Full Version : RM2K/3 Pokemon Battle System

GymLeaderLance99 - Krazy explained variable splitting in that quote. And you don't need to use every single variable. But the battle system will take up a fair few of the maximum allowed.
Mr Cat Dog - We're allows looking for more slaves...err...helpers. DM has a team list with everybody who's helping. The only problem is we can never get a time when everyone can work on it at the same time due to people being in different timezones and having school, college, work etc.
Krazy - I must have missed you on MSN. I'll catch you online next time and we can go over everything.

1) How can I do a variable split? Like, what do I click on? Or is there another way to copy a whole bunch of variables?
2) To use your battle system, do we need to use all the variables? Or are there only some we need to use?
Anyway, good progress on the battle system.
Well I explained this in another thread.. Here it is:
You have to use the mod command in the variable operations section..
I used something similar for my CNS.. Mine was a bit different because i was splitting and repairing variables..
The mod command divides the variable by a number and leaves the remainder in the variable..
Alright say your number was $304, you mod it by 100 and the answer is 3 rmdr 4, the 4 will be put into the original variable you were using to do the sum. That's why it's a good idea to copy your variable.. Do something like this var [0001:ones] set var [0002:hero's money]
Then you can mod it without losing the data you had in the money variable..
The battle system uses triple-double variable splitting.. I'm not sure if that's what it's called but it just sounds so kool... Anyway that means that it splits 1 variable into 3 and then another variable into 3.
I used to have a list of all the variables and switches I used in the battle system.. If you explore the thread a little bit then maybe you will find it.. If I were you I wouldn't use any of the variables that the battle system uses at all.

I noticed that the download doesn't work for the battle system anymore.. I thought I may as well upload it here in case anyone wants to use it..
One file has the .exe file included and the other doesn't..

Well I'm impressed. Especially now. I had played it before. Never tried to catch a pokemon or anything. I not only caught one but leveled up too. The PC worked too. I had no idea it would. Looks like you've got a good part of it done. Might want to do the Switching Pokemon part next. I had when I hit enter on it and then getting stuck... Good luck.
I think I may actually be able to help now. More thank just mapping. I'm getting better with rm2k3. Though I think I can just as well use my abilities in my current position which is writing the story for the game being made with the battle sys. Good luck!

Well I un-intentionally made the coding for pokemon switch already.. All that would be needed would be the screen for pokemon switch and some cms-style coding for it and then the rest of the coding could be put in quickly..
EDIT: More helpers are always good Daegon, Phoenix seems to be leading the project now.. He has volunteered where no-one else would.. Makes me feel kinda proud :)
DM hasn't been on for a while so I guess he will find out later..
He may have given up on it like a lot of others..
Mr Cat Dog

Well, since me and Phoenix live in the same time zone, I should be able to do stuff with him at least.. so - what do you want me to do? ^_^
Dawson
January 28th, 2005, 09:23 PM
Daegon - The more help the better.
If we're all willing to start on the whole game as well as the battle system then we're going to need sign up's again. Just state what you're willing to do:
CBS Coding Phoenix, Daegon, Open
CMS Coding Phoenix, Esai, Open
Map Making Phoenix, Barry, rm2k3kid, Mr Cat Dog, DMMP
Common Events Mr Cat Dog, Open
Map Events Esai, NeoDragon, Open
Story Creation Barry, Mr Cat Dog
I think that's everything that was on the last list. First thing we can all decide is regions. rm2k3kid made these regions back when we first started:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/LorcaRegion.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/AzzicRegion.png
So do we use these, I like them and would be happy to use them. After we decide the region's landscape, the mappers can start on Towns and Routes.
And remember, the more people that help = the quicker the game will be finished & the quality of the game will be higher.

Common (meaning talking and stuff like in an intro where you go get your first pokemon) events and story creation. Not sure if I could help with the major coding or not. However, if you don't think I can handle common events, I could probably do better mapping. I don't want all 3 though.

What would the story be???
Dawson
January 29th, 2005, 12:09 AM
Barry - Common Events are things like day/night systems, clock systems, running etc. Things that you make in the common events tab on the database. So to clarify what do you want to help with?
DMMP - The story would be created by the story writers.

I wouldn't mind giving a hand with a few things.. I just don't like being the lead programmer..
I could help out on the cbs every now and then.. I have things to do but if you are having trouble with it then I will be glad to lend a hand..
Daegon also told me that he was trying to convert the battle system to rmxp.. He said that it was done but he hadn't tested it yet.. Apparently he converted a few things to rgss so that it was still possible..
Mr Cat Dog
January 29th, 2005, 09:56 AM
I can do Common events, Story and Mapping.
If you want, you can just use the prologue of Metamorph and go with that. Obviously if you didn't want to create 100+ new Pokemon, then you can edit the part where it said: "Mew created all new Pokemon". I'd much rather be part of a team that probably will succeed, than by myself where I'll probably give up somewhere along the lines XD

Can I do Map events??
DMMP
January 29th, 2005, 04:02 PM
This project seems intruiging... I'd be willing to put my project, POTW on hold, and work on this. I can do mapping, if the help is still needed. I enjoy mapping towns. Also, since GOTS is going no where at this time, I think I could do this. I could help out mapping for a while. This project actually looks like it could be done quickly, and, since it appears to have some of the best minds in the Community working on it, I think this could be top notch. If anyone wants, I'll ask DarkPegasus if he would like to do custom pokemon design/graphics design.
Edit: Hey, since there are so many great minds working on this project, I think that this game should do something really amazing, something never done before, with either the story, or features, or something along those lines. I don't know what, but, I really feel this project needs a unique flair. Maybe different trainer outfits... That seems to be the biggest thing that people want, that never happens. That, or something along those lines... This definitly has the potential to be the best project (of course, probably not better than COL) on this board.

Kyledove, well we got together and decided to make a game with the actual battle system in it.. We hadn't thought of a name yet or a storyline or anything so we just made this thread for the battle. We were gonna keep it private but then we just decided to make it public.
DMMP, What do you mean nobody has ever made custom trainer outfits? I have!
I really don't like the way people are using my ideas and claiming them as their own. I want my own features to be unique and if everyone else starts using them then they're no longer unique at all.

I really don't have the time to carry on with the project at the moment sorry..
I am really only here for help on the coding. The last release was all I have done with it in a long time..
It's not that old, the last release is pretty advanced.. For rm2k3 I suppose... I was thinking about an rmxp version of it but I won't even make a start on that for a long time.
Rmxp seems to be a lot better with pictures.. So instead of 1 million hp pictures, I can modify the x dimensions of the picture to fit the hp bar nicely. 100Y x 2000X means that will be a very long picture :)
I was probably the only one passionate about this project to spend all of my time on it so I am not too worried if there is not another release. I am happy I acheived so much :P

Well you can always do reverse decimal.. Just make it 12345 instead of 12.345 or however many decimal places you expect will be needed for the calculations..
It does get a bit complicated though so I wouldn't worry about it.. You would need to change all of the pokemon's stats and the stat reader to match the decimal places

Good idea to have it backed up now.. I will give it a go :)
The item sys only has 2 parts of the bag done.. But the coding is universal, you can use most of the data anywhere in the game.
I was planning on more but I didn't have the time and I couldn't be bothered making all the pp and special moves for adding in more items..
Edit: Ok I tested it.. Lots of bugs.. You must have changed the variables again or something...
1. In the trainer battle, all the enemy pokemon are lv0 and have no life.
2. The hp bar no longer decreases 1-by-1, it just subtracts a huge chunk.
3. When you select fight, you are allowed to move the selector across to an invisible attack. When you use it, it appears to be leer.. But the battle calculations do nothing to it.
1 & 2 were caused when you changed the variables for hp I assume, 3 was probably caused by me.. It is a simple matter of changing how many moves our pokemon knows for now.
Good work with the battle calculations, I assumed my guess would be slightly accurate. Have you tested it with lvling up? Maybe you could implement the experience calculation next..

The battle sys doesn't lag for me. About the grass... I did that on purpose. So that I could test stuff out quicker. On a side note, I haven't really touched the box sys either; I'm trying to think of a way to shorter the code more.

That's because Krazy's the original creator of the battle sys. I'm merely a helper. All credits for the battle sys go to Krazy, and all bugs to me.

Yeah I found a few bugs.. Would you mind too much if I used a version I had been working on while everyone else had V2? I want to keep all your formulae but I think the system would work better if the original variables were simply copied and not bypassed. Also, my version has a lot more of the hidden bugs worked out..

You don't really "install it" You just copy the maps into your game, and make sure that the variables used in the original battle sys aren't used with variables from your own game. That's it.

Sorry for the lack of updates everyone.. I kept forgetting :embarrass
Anyway I got a little update for anyone still interested in the group cbs..
*Fixed problem with cns loading names in-correctly
*Added working pokemon selection system
*Fixed problem with pokemon loader
*Completed menu-type code for selection sys
*Fixed various bugs with the catch pokemon sys
*Worked out minor lag issues
*Other small bugs fixed
I still have a lot of work left on the pokemon selection menu but it's getting along..
I still have to:
*Fix a problem with first caught pokemon's name being overwritten by every pokemon after that.
*Modify selection sys to show updated pokemon positions (eg. switch pokemon and the selection screen will look the same)
That's all.. Not too hard to do but it takes a lot of time to find errors..
Modification will not be that hard either but none-the-less, I don't have a lot of time to work on the cbs anymore..
I just wanted you all to know that this will be the last release of the CBS by the team. After this is done, the group project will possess almost every aspect of the pokemon battle system which is what it started out to achieve.
Other things like summary of pokemon and attatching items for battle are not necessary for the group project and I have allowed enough freedom for people to code them in.
Also, after this is complete I don't want to see everyone asking for "battle system coders" or anything because if you can't understand the cbs yourself then you can't expect others to help you.
It's been over a year since I joined PC and started this project, I would hope to see it stickied one day so that a year's worth of work is not simply forgotten.

Anyway I have a small update as I am working on the cbs right now..

That's all for updates now so I will post later I guess..

Well I use the variables to store information about pokemon (when you recieve one etc.)
then I use the conditional branch to do something based on the information in those variables. I would suggest having a look at one of the old releases and editing it a bit before trying to help me on this.. As far as I know, a pokemon cbs is more difficult than a regular one..
I appreciate the offer though, perhaps after a bit of learning you might be able to help me :)

Off topic: u havent been on msn for a while..why?
Krazy_Meerkat
June 21st, 2005, 01:21 AM
What is your name on msn? I usually block most people on msn untill I feel like talking to them, I'm very busy..
You don't have to re-start your games, you have to merge your game with the cbs or the cbs with your game, that means take all the coding, maps, commone events, etc. from one and put it in the other. Change any variables/switches as needed and you're done..
I suggest merging your game with the cbs unless you are pretty far with your game.
I am not going to upload PRII again because it is outdated and I can't seem to find the demo anymore.. It's not really worth playing anymore anyway.
The cbs is being discussed currently, the may not even be a next demo.. Apparently most people can make their own cbs and those who can't usually don't give credit.

You know, the battle system that I posted is almost complete. Anyone who wants to use it just needs to add the attacks and pokemon they need; and make the switch system that is;; (which wouldn't be as hard IMO) So I've decided to take the battle system, and customise it for a game project I was working on with a couple of friends here.
As it's been said in the CBS, the battle system's free for use, but I hope the guys who made it(I'm Daegon if you haven't noticed) get the proper credit that they need. I'll make a tutorial for this if anyone wants as well.

Hmm... It worked for me..
Anyways, I'm glad its free for use. But it looks like theres quite a few things that need to be fixed/added. Why is it everytime you beat a Latios you go up a level? Why is it every one step in that grass you encounter a battle. Why do you attack the trainer even after the pokemon are defeated? Thoes are just a few thigns. :rambo:
Sorye HK
December 11th, 2005, 07:11 AM
First, that's because I haven't set how many exp you need to gain a level. The formula works fine. Second, you battle the instant you step on to the grass because I wanted to you guys to see the battle system faster. Thirdly, I mentioned that I hadn't programmed in the trainer's pokemon yet; which is the reason why it isn't working properly.

Daegon, this was always my choice for a battle system. I don't want it dead. RMXP.. I hate that.. RM2K3 is my program and if you get it finished, that's great. Trust me, there are many that don't have a clue how to make a battle system. I will use it if it is complete. Attacks are hard to add because of the picture... though I assume they could be added from the menu that is meant for attacks? Where they have the original attacks at.
