This is a thread for those who are unfamiliar about how to do some things
in RM2K/3 or know any good links you want to tell the other members
about. Anything else that doesn't need a full thread or debate should also belong here.
I thought it'd be useful having this thread since it's better than cluttering
this section up with threads.

Im a real noob at this, and I was wondering how you make rooms and set up warps to enter them?, eg. going into the Pokemon Center, Poke mart, etc

ok, this is different from a pokemon gba hack, you say it "MAPS" and "TELEPORTS"
The way to create a new map, is to right click on an existing map (in the little side bar thing) and select "create new map" then if you want to make a new telelport go into event layer editing mode and right click on the map (not in the side bar) and select "teleport position" or something.. well hope i was of some help

And to teleport, just make an event, and for its commands (double click the <>) go to the second tab and find "teleport." Chose the map where you want to teleport to and select the exact coordinate by clicking. Make sure the event is set to "On Hero Touch" and "Below Hero" so when you step over it it'll teleport you.

To do that I made Pikachu as my main hero, but used a way to fool people to think they were controlling Ash. I used a Password event to do this. (When you press left,
Hero moves left down face left e.t.c) Then Pikachu's stats come up instead of Ash's!

Menue? Check out my game. There's no current download link because I need to get my site back up, but someone else may be able to give it to you.

Pokemon Galaxy? Nooo Ash isnt a hero (well you look like Ash, but.. meh), you control Pikachu (using Ashs graphics to fool you) everytime you go to a shop, it changes the graphics to Pikachu so it looks like Pikachu in the shop window, etc.

My bad, but RM2kemon definately had David as a hero. You can see in the menue. Check that one out. PKMN galaxy is a good one anyway ;)

I've seen long ago RM2kemon, its pretty good, but i think it lacks the feel of the real pokemon games, and the chipsets, but interesting idea considering that the actual game was thrown together in around 2 weeks or so (it says so, and i remember reading it when i downloaded the game)

does anybody know how to change the font and text box size in rpg2k3? i need it for my game because the default text box is too big. oh and does anyone know where to download rpg2k3 because my friend wants it and i don't have the installer.

I posted this somewhere else for you... but oh well. I'll say it again:

Just make a picture for your text box (Show Picture command), make your textbox transparent (Message Style command) and only type in the bottom two lines (Show Message command). Work???

The default one. You can make the custom box (The image) semitransparant if you want. Here's the theory
Bottom>Image of Textbox
Middle>Default textbox graphic, set see-thru
Top>Text, appears over graphic because middle layer is transparant.

To "recycle" a map used all too much (coughpokémoncentercough), you can use an event called "Memorize Position" (or "Memory Place" in some versions).

I won't get technical, but this makes it so you can go to the Pokémon Center in Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, etc. without making multiple Pokémon Centers.
All you have to do is follow these steps for the events specified:

=====Door Leading INTO Pokémon Center=====
<>Memorize Location: [a], [b], [c]
<>Teleport: ????:Pokémon Center(xx,yy)Retain Facing* (RM2K3 Only)

Now let me explain. In the command event, a, b, and c are variables.
It doesn't matter which ones you use, but I usually use them all in a row.
They all have to be different ones. Let's say you use 0001, 0002, and 0003.
The 1st one is "MapID", the 2nd one is "Xpos", and the 3rd is "Ypos".
These save what map you were on, where you were from west to east, and where you were from north to south.
(this command is the 6th command down on the left of page 2)
The second command is the teleportation to the Pokémon Center itself. That's it.

=====Exit of Pokémon Center=====
<>Recall to Position: V[a] (V[b],V[c])
-optional, but recommended-<>Move Event: Hero,Move Down
<>

What this does is return you to the saved position.
Make sure that the variables for this event are the same as the ones from before.
This should take you out of the Pokémon Center, and return you to where you were before entering (and if you did the optional part, it will also make you step away from the door).

The "Move Event" command is about 4th from the bottom of the right of page 2 if I recall...

Thanks for that, but now I've got another problem now, for some reason I can't test play my game, I installed a hero and text fix on it and I think that might be the problem, I've tried uninstalling RM2K and then reinstalling it but it still doesn't work

Im really new, i just downloaded it a week ago,does anyone have some tutiroals for it, particularly switches and variables. And also how do you make a person go into a building? :confused:

To make someone go into a building, draw the building map, then use the teleport command in Event Editing Mode. If you didn't understand that, don't worry- you will ;) I'm writing a tutorial myself for all the people in the world that want to make their very own pokemon game!

Silencer>Did you download and play my game? If not, I have a menue like that. You can copy and paste the code if you want, but don't steal the graphics. If you use the code though, your graphics will need to be the same size as mine. You can download Pokémon Lunar at www.darkmageclub.tk

Lt. Surge> I think "Pokemon Liquid" by rm2k3kid has f/r l/g graphics. Try his game and ask him if you can use the graphics.

You need to have a two pictures- the actual menue, and the pointer. Make sure you have everything right. It's not just the code, you know!

I knew that.. however some people have a hard time with the coding because it is so hard to understand the actual coding.. especially on RM2k since Don Miguel translated some of the stuff wrong

Check to make sure everything's right. My coding takes up two (optionally 3) common events- make sure you have the first one. That's the one that sets the ball rolling.

Here's the theory behind it all:
1) You make the default menue unavailable
2) You use Set Password/Key Input Processing to moniter the usage of the Esc key
3) you call up the graphics when the Esc key is pressed
4) You use Password/Input to control path of the arrow
5) Picture location is set by variables, not specific coordinates. So when down key is pressed, you can add a certain ammount to the Y axis variable, bringing the arrow down a notch.
6) Conditional Branches/Forks can be used to loop the arrow back to the top when Down is hit at the bottom of the list, and likewise with the Up key.
6) Key Input/Password also controls select key (spacebar) to select items.

so do i have to add all the pokedex stuff and everything for it to work, or do i only have to use ur three menu common events?

I got it working, except i have the map event set on toggle (Enable Menue) , cuz if i have it on then i cant get out the menu

and if it is on then it dont let me move, and the screen wont go away

just go to the event layer....click to make an event, choose the picture as a person...and then go to where u make what the event is, and u can choose to make a message....then make the message, and choose action key, same layer, and it should be a person u can talk to

The pokédex stuff is all seperate events for the CMS.

If you copied everything right, you shouldn't have any problems. If you give me more detail, I may be able to purge the bugs you may be experiencing with the CMS.

nah..... do i put in the pokedex stuff or leave it blank so that i can make my own version, and ...umm ok ... when i test my game, it brings up the auto menu, but when i got to the debugger and turn on...enable menu, and then go back to my game, the menu comes up but i can stil move around and cant control the menu, it just sits there....and then if i got back to debugger it says that menue called is on, and enable menue is off.

idk wut i did but now when i move down and up it moves the menu cursor too...

Yup, your Key Input Process things were wrong. Make sure the variable you have in the Key Input Process window match the ones in the Conditional Branchs later on.

And I'm not quite sure why the Hero is moving... I'll look into that. Make sure all your common event trigger conditions match the ones in my game.

How do I make a message box? When I test run, it says I need to create position of starting party....

u probably need to configure the tileset. go to the database and then go to the tileset tab. you'll see an option called 'passability' which has the tilesets from your game. X means you cant walk over it. O means u can walk over it and the star means you can only walk behind it. I hope that helps.

you forgot the square.

square is for the top of the wall, you can only walk 1 tile under these, and can be put above inside doors..

Does anyone know why i can't 'save target as...' on my comp. i'm trying to download pokemon themes from a site and all i can do is listen to them from the site which is no good for me as i need them in my game.

I had this trouble once, what I did was record the song from the speaker output on my soundcard straight onto my minidisk player, and then back onto my computer using the software provided with the player.

I found the streamed music from the site was not very good quality but with filtering you can enhance it I suppose.

If you don't have a mini disk player then you could use a tape deck or an mp3 player instead

What is "aim"? Whatever it is, I don't have it... I have msn... the search engine at least... so when you guys say put it on aim or msn, what do you mean?
Oh, Darkmage, have you found any websites without "game" in the URL? I know,this is acompletely diferent thread, but I thought I'd ask... and does any body have any clue as to which legendarys I should use?

Well, a lot of stuff is on those links, and there are only so many links. We might as well give the links as they're asked for instead of sending people on wild-goose-chases around the internet. That's just my opinion though.

Exactly.. thats why i think we should make a link thread.. like people post links to RM2k sites, and maybe something like people could give a description of the site.. its just a thought.. because i think most of the people here that needs help, asks for links/tutorials/resources in this thread

despite how much i dislike that word, that was quite a noobish question sorry.
a cbs takes a lot of work and i couldn't possibly even begin to explain it here.. and besides, what makes a cbs is the fact that you thought it up yourself.. you could probly use ours.. but its not ready yet.

to make items dissapear use switches..

for the answer to both.. go to www.gamingw.net and do some tutorials.. look at other people's cbs's to get an idea on how to make your own..

:pokeball: Craig619>That error is what happens when you hack the RPG_RT.exe file to make the game uneditable. Some people do that to their games so people can't mess with their work. I have a utility that does it for you.

:pokeball: demonstrife>In the database (F8) click the Hero tab. Find your character and click on him in the list. Towards the bottom right there should be a button called Skill Progression. Delete all of the abilities in this list by hilighting one and hitting <Delete> on your keyboard.

All right, how do I get it to where my hero catches the pokemon? And how do I make it to where the pokemon don't attack my hero? Any ideas?

Oh, I was wondering, how do you guys get all that stuff on your posts, the same pics and all time after time? And how do you mak a clickable sig?(Where the button says one thing, then you click it, and a window pops up finishining it) I'd like to know... well thanks DarkMage!

Hey, Krazy Meerkat, I was dowloadind the winRaR download so I could play, but when I got it done, it said the file Crown5 was not found! I' searched my computer for it, and I reinstalled it. So do you have the file? 'Cause I really wanna play.
And can someone help me with the plot for my game? Be cause I refuse to stick too much to the same mold... like after you do certain things, you wind up unlocking special hidden cilps in your pc. (this game will be rated "M" for mature mainly because I plan on making two versins... one for adults, one for kids! the... hold up, in roman numerals, what is D? Anyways, the "m" version is mainly about a guy who owns a Bagon and his uber-hot girlfriend, and their adventures together. the kiddy one is well, abou a hero who go around beating the gyms and the usual. the adult one let the pokemon use weapons... *hands Mewtwo a double sideed battle-axe* the kiddy one they jcan hold berries and the usual...*Mewtwo chops the little kiddy version to bits* So I need a plot for the adult one first, alright? any Ideas will be greatly appreciated! PM me with ideas!

Hey.. I've got a prob as well.. :nervous:
When I make an event.. and only want to make it work once,
I first put in, for example, a message..
then I put in: delete event..
Well, it does work, when I don't leave the building..
but when I leave the building (or area) and then enter the area again,
the event works again..
so my question is: How can I remove an event after it took place once
in the game permanently??

make a switch activated at the end of the event.
add a new page and have it so that it is activated when the switch is on.

Lavender town: Push on F7.. (event mode)
then right click on a tile that you want your party to start on,

Intros can be made with pictures, or you can use AVI videos. MissingChu used AVI's, I used pictures. Name choices can be made with the Enter Hero Name command. Is that what you were asking?

Ya can't, but you can:
~Edit the splash screens (Double click RPG_RT.exe to run your game outside rm2k. The splash screens are the logos before the titlescreen)
~Create a custom title screen after the default one with pictures and a flashing "Press Start"

When i try to get some pkmn ruby battle pics inorted in to Rm2k it says "color depth invalid", so i go into paint and save it as 246 color bitmap imaige it changes. Is ther a patch for higher resolution images? ( sorry if i mistype)

There's no real way to avoid it though, except for taking your screens (rips) in 256 colors initially. Then there shouldn't be a problem. Try Animget. Can someone plz explain to me how to delete an event after it took place once??!! When I do delete event in for excample a gym...
then when I leave the gym, and enter it again, I can battle the gymleader
again!! so how can I delete an event after it took place once permenently..

Right, what you need to do is to set a switch to activate after you have beaten the gym, and then in the event, you have to make a new page, and on the new page you set it to be activated by the new switch that you made. Does that make sense?

Could someone tell me how to make a teleport? As in going from my town to a Pokemon Center? I know like how to make one. But I don't know how to acutally make him teleport, if you get what I'm saying... lol And if you couldn't guess I'm totally new at this.

:pokeball: PatsRule1223> "People," or NPC's, (Non-Player characters) are made by going into Event Mode editing (F7) and making a new event. Set the graphic (double click the pink square) to the charset of a civilian, and then use the Show Message command to have a conversation. Show Message displays text on the screen. A box will pop up, and you type in what you want your NPC to say. Then set your event to the movement pattern "Random." Also make sure the event is on Push Key and Same Level as Hero (so you can't walk through him and you press <Spacebar> to talk to him)

The beginning is made with the panoramas (parallax background), pictures, and text. Make a gradient, and save it as a 245-color 320x240 bitmap. Import it into your game in the Panorama folder (use the Resource Manager for this). Right click your intro map and select Map Properties. Check "Use Parallax Background" and select your gradient. Hit OK. Now draw pictues of Prof. Oak and the rest of the crew and use the Show Picture command to show the pictures. The rest is just using Show Message! Did that help?

You can make bosses graphics as an NPC, and then use the battle system to have the boss battle. You can do all that in the Database (F8).
To make your NPC's "better looking" you simply have to get better graphics, unless I misunderstood the question

What I meant was use Show Picture (tab 2 on your event command list) to show the pictues of ppl like Prof Oak. Then you can use show message to have the pic Oak saying something. For example, the picture of Prof Oak comes up, and then the text appears saying: Welcome to the world of Pokémon!

To edit the text that comes up when you press the action key on a sign is done by going into event mode, double clicking the sign tile, and using the command Show Message. If you want to edit pre-existing text, right click your message and select Edit. Or you can hilight it and press Space if that's faster for you.

If you want to edit the text on the ACTUAL sign, as in the graphic that appears in the world, load the chipset into iDraw or MS Paint and edit it that way.

First go into a paint program like idraw. Make a "new" picture using the specific
sizes given. (check RM2K/3 help thingy) Then put that file into the "Title" or
something like that folder. Then go into the database and replace the title screen with the picture you want it to be.

Hmm..... I still can't really get the intro to work... like I get the Professor to pop up but my background is the starting town and the same text pops up over and over and I can't get my character to move.... any help is greatly appreciated and I'll gove you credit at the end!

I think you've put an "auto start" event. To stop it popping up all the time you'll
need a "erase event" or "end event processing" section in your script.

Yep, Auto Starts loop indefinately. Same with Paralell Process. If you don't want the background to be your starting town, make a new map and make it all blank (pink) with your lower mode editing tile. Then use your paralax background with the gradient (remember how to do that?). After you get Oak to pop up and all the text that you want, do a Teleport to your starting town. That will stop the Auto Start and get you to your starting town in one swoop. Good luck!

For the tile screen, go to database (F8) and go to the System tab. There you can select the BGM for the titlesceen.

Yup, I've heard of RM XP. It's supposed to feature 32-bit graphics ('bout time!!!), with support for jpegs and multiple alpha channels for levels of transparency. They already sell RM2k3 in US, i think it was in North America or something.. anyways, not everybody lives in US so there will still be pirated versions, for people that cant buy it, or cant import it.

Sorry to bother you guys again! But, I'm having a few problems. For some odd reason, I can only make the text for a sign on a tile in front of the sign. So, if I'm looking to the left or right on the tile and the sign is above me and I press the action button, the text comes up. The other problem is with the items. How do you make it so if i press the action button on a PokeBall it will say something like "Found a Potion" and you will get a potion and the PokeBall will disappear?

P.S. I don't know if this will be the last time. I keep finding more and more problems

Hey, make sure you have everything as little squares in the Directional Pass function thingy.

To make the pkball disapear, make a new page in your event and make it a switch (pokeball found) with a blank graphic. Then on your first page switch on Pokeball found. It'll disapear.

Make the event where you want the pokeball to be. Give the first page the pokeball graphics and the message command. Make sure it's on push key. Make a new page. On the left where it lists a bunch of stuff (I can't remember what they call it) check "Switch" and make a new switch, like, say what Neo said, "Pokeball Found." Make the graphic blank with no commands. Keep it on Push Key. Now go back to the first page and do a Switch Operations after the message, and turn on "Pokeball Found." It'll dissappear. Did that work?

Hi Everyone, Rusty....

I realized that alot of times when I download cahracter sets ..... in Rpg Maker.... they have lines on the side of em (Pink or Green or Whatever) which makes some pink or green around them when they wal.... alot of it actuallyl..... but Pokemon Rustys Game Fixed it....... I have some nice character sets.... but i want to know what he did to fix it so i can do it too...
The ones at gaming ground Zero are invalid image size... .Pokemon Rusty changed it though.... HOW DO I?! GGZ ones are 388 by 256 when they shoiuld be 288 by 256..

The PC system is a bit more complicated... you're probably going to want to use pictures that are rips.

To display the hero's name in text, use the tag \n[x]. The x stands for which hero number you are referencing. For example, Hero 0001 (Hero tab, list on left) is who you play as. So, if you use Enter Hero Name and have your name as Dark, you want it to say, So your name is Dark? The message would look like "So your name is \n[1]?" in the editor. If you want to name your rival, just go to your database Hero tab and make Hero 0002 your rival. Then do an EHN for your rival and use \n[2]. Make sure the slash is a backslash (\) not a regular one (/). You can find it in between Backspace and Enter.

I can't link to any onhand at the moment... futuristic sets are easy to come by, but I don't know about planets and stars... you don't walk in space a lot ;)

To make the ball dissappear, click "New Page" in your event and on the left check "switch" and make a new switch. Call it whatever you want. Make the graphic blank. Go back to page one and add a command at the end that turns on your new switch. This flips the page to the one with the blank graphic and blank command list, as if the pokeball dissappeared off the table! Did this work for you?

Oh yea, and how do I make a trap? So if you haven't chose a Pokémon, the professor will have a message and you can't go beyond that point until you choose one.

I'm not sure what you mean with the first question.

The second one's easy. Just make an event set to On Hero Touch, activated by a switch (check left in editor) Then you can add text. Just flip the switch on to activate the trap, off to deactivate it for normal passage. Just add a Move Event so you step away from the trap once you step on it.

Well there are several different translations of RM2k/2k3 i think..
Myself i use Advocates RM2k3 translation, and if im not wrong, this is the most well known one, please correct me if it isnt.

Heres a pretty simple way to do it with the Start Combat/Enemy Encounter mode.

Remember to add a victory condition to it, then do like this:
Note: Non event scripting is marked in bold text

<>Enemy Encounter: Battle Condition here, Monster group here
: Victory Handler << this is so we can make the boss dissapear if you win
Now add whatever you want of scripting inbetween the switch and the victory handler
<>Switch Operation: [switch number here] ON << so the boss dissapears

Thats really all it takes, now make an extra page and set the walking graphics for the boss to blank, and add whatever you want of event scripting

That is how the coding looks.. on RM2k it says Change Switch, and Defeat Case (in start combat) i think.

But on RM2k3 it is Switch Operations, and Defeat Handler (in enemy encounter)

Tutorials for CBS's don't come that easily... I'll work on one though and attatch it in .txt format. It may be a while though... :dead:

You can't. maybe you've heard or are talking about using a panorama and a chipset,
or using a picture and a chipset. Those things I mentioned above are the usual ways
people claim they theoretically use two chipsets.

Actually you CAN use two chipsets on one map, you just need to use the Event script function named Change Chipset (RM2k) / Change Map Tileset (RM2k3) then pick a tileset you want it to change to, then put the event somewhere.. like a door that leads to another room, like in a dungeon.. but you'll need to put another event to change back to the other chipset if you want to be able to go in and out of the rooms, etc.

ok i programmed the zelda type battle system and it still wont work...are there any common mistakes that could be the problem?. i go at the enemy and we just walk into eachother, no damage or anything.

What I do for ABS's is I have the event set on Hero Touch. Then I have a fork condition for "If key is pushed" and then an else case. So when you press space while touching it, it will do something (damage to enemy) and in the else handler I put the damage to you. How are you working it?

What are you trying to say? Are you saying that the tut was in the RM2K section
but it was really for RM2K3 or that the tut is for RM2K but you're using RM2k3?

Can anyone tell me how to make an item that will "CATCH" Pokemon ?
I just know it has something to do with variables, but no one explains it clearly enough for me to understand it, & I have NO IDEA about how to use variables.

Just make an item and under "Classification" or whatever, make it a "Switch." That way when you use the item, a switch will go on. Call it "Capture" or something.

Now go into the M.Groupstab in your database. At the bottom find the "Battle Events." Double click the |...| button and check "Switch" and find "Capture." Now double click the "<>" in the white box.

Here's where you need to understand variables. Variables are numbers. That's it. Numbers. Simple! These numbers can represent whatever you want them to. A number of your choice, the monster's HP, your screen coordinates, whatever you want really. Moving on.

Now click "Variable Operations." Click the |...| at the top of the new window and find a blank variable slot. Name it "Monster HP." Hit OK. Now find the section called "Operand." This is where you set what number the variable will be. Check "Monster," select the enemy pokemon, and make sure "HP" is selected from the drop-down box to the right. Hit okay. Now, when you use the Pokeball item, it will turn on the switch Capture, which will set a number to the enemy's HP. Moving on.

Double click the next "<>" and find Conditional Branch or Fork Condition. Click it. Now select the second item, Variable. Click the |...| button and find the variable "Enemy HP." Next to where it says Number, type the number 30. Now find the drop-down box where it says "Equal to." Select "Less than" from the list. Make sure "Execute Custom Handler" is selected at the bottom. Next step.

Right under this, inbetween the command "Conditional Branch" and "Else Handler," use commands to show your Pokeball animation and whatever. Then add it to your party using the "Change Party" command. Capture sucessful!

Now, under "Else Handler," enter your commands for if it failed. (Aww... it was so close to!")

Now, when you use the pokeball, it will turn on the switch "Capture" which will save the opponents HP in a variable. If it's HP is less than 30, you will catch it.

That's the watered down version. Of course the formula's much more complicated, but that'll get you through for now until you understand random range variables ;)

I want to make a Pokemon game but I can't do it because you can only have four people at a time and when I need it so you can switch Heroes like in pokemon game computers.

That is... if you use the default system. It can still be managed to have 6 members in your party if you use variables and use a CBS. But for beginners, stick to the default battle system (DBS).

if you don't know how to work switches and variables then your gonna have huge problems. in fact i dont think you can make a game without using switches and variables. Go to www.gamingw.com and read some tutorials.

I think I understand what you are saying Kevin. You can't walk from the starting position right? Maybe it's because the passibility is set to an X. Go to Tools, then Database, then go to Tileset(Chipset), then go to the Tileset you were using for the game, then set the passibility for it.

X= can't walk through it
O=able to walk on it
*(star)=able to walk behind it

When he means something invisible, it could be that all his chipsets are set to star. So that his character is under all the chipsets and when he moves, the screen moves but he can't see himself. Just start setting your chipsets the correct way Kev.
