I am glad that the demo will be coming out as planned. I really want to see what you've been doing all this time.

Just some info on the demo. The battle system is still very buggy. I've put it in on Route 001 so you have a small idea of how I intend to adapt it fully. The intro looks a bit messed up because I've had to remove a few parts because it was causing weird problems. There a few little bugs that don't affect the gameplay but just affectic the cosmetic side slightly. Other than that everything else should work properly. There will be 3 (maybe 4) Towns, 2 (maybe 3) Routes, a Forest, a Cave and a minigame.

The demo is now ready...hopefully. It works fine on my comp but when i download it, it is missing some a system file. Demo (http://projects.lateralshift.net/hiddendepths/files/Pokemon.rar) and here's the files if you need them. Extra Files (http://projects.lateralshift.net/hiddendepths/files/Extra%20Files.rar). You'll have to open the game in RM2K3 and then import them to the system folder. I hope it works.

Cool, i'm downloading it right now, ill edit my post when im done playing the demo :)

EDIT:
Pretty cool, though there were a few bugs here in there.

Mapping was really nice, reminded me of Pokemon.
Some Events were buggy, like when you have to choose a Pokemon, if you select YES the rivals dont pick a Pokemon, and if you choose no the rivals pick a Pokemon, and you dont have one.
Some of the chipsets was really good, did you make the buildings?

And when I tried opening your game in RPG Maker some of your maps were filled with water, and the hero's house and stuff didnt look like they did ingame, did you do something to the game or is it just my RPG maker?

By the way I noticed you used some names and stuff from some of the other Pokemon games, like Prof Pine, is that just a coincidence or was it meant to be like that?

Well I'm glad it worked. I forgot to mention that you have to pick the first Pokeball otherwise none of the other events work. I will fix that to make it work properly but I just didn't have the time. I did make the buildings, however not from scratch. I just took bits from original buildings to create my own unique(ish) style. The maps are like that when you open it in RM2K because I've edited the .exe file to stop people from seeing the stuff that I have done but plan to release in the next demo. Prof Pine just seemed like an obvious choice of name.

Oh I see, well the music changing system from town to route, seems to work exactly like how mine does :)

Well I dont really see the point in editing the RPG_RT.exe so people can't see it however its your choice.

By the way when a battle ends the music doesn't change back from the battle theme.

I can honestly say that this is easily one of the best demos out so far! A couple of bugs and errors, but everything is great. Has a very Pokemon feel to it and as Avatar has said, great mapping skills phoenix. One thing this demo has than most, is length. It is a game that can easily take up 20-30 minutes of your time. It also has a couple of things you could actually do in the game. I really can't complain about anything. Great job phoenix!

Man there's so many problems for people just trying to download. PKMN Sage thanks for the great comments n_n. Just out of curiousity did anyone play the maze minigame and did anyone find all 10 Pokeballs? The demo would have actually been longer but when I played it myself I found it rather boring and not entertaining. I'm going on vacation on Monday for 2 weeks so I wont be able to work on the game at all and after that I start college so I wont have much time for about a week then. However I wont stop work being made completely. I will work up until Monday fixing all the bugs in this demo and adding in the rest of the features that were missing like the clock, calendar, map, good/bad system and the real time events. And when I return from vacation I will continue working on map designing on paper like I have for the other towns as well as adding more detail to the storyline and events.

evaluation

1. the character isn't transparent at the start of the game.
2. when you pick your pokemon and say "no" the events don't
carry on properly
3. wild pokemon battle doesn't start properly.
-or is this another one of my computer problems?
4. more on the way.
5. it's really annoying when you're mum blocks the way out of your room.
Make the path a bit bigger.
6. when you enter to get your pokemon, if you don't enter in the middle,
you face left or right when the event starts.
7. unless you pick bulbasaur, the other kids don't pick anything.
8. unless you pick bulbasaur, you can pick every pokemon.
9. once i got the pokegear and went back to the lab, the two pokeballs
that I hadn't picked are on the table.
10. after the pokegear, I can pick another pokemon.
11. even if I say no, sometimes, I get the pokemon.
12. it rains inside
13. stopped again by yet another pokemon battle..wish I could save.

end of evaluation due to PKMN battles.

Thanks Daegon, I was waiting for this post.
1, My mistake when I was checking the cave events and forgot to change the charset in the database.
2, this was the big problem in the demo. I've sorted it now and you can pick any Pokemon and say no and all of the events carry on as normal.
3, why doesn't it start properly? Did anybody else have this problem?
4, ?
5, For some reason when I made your mom walk she took a step and then stopped and then took another step. I've changed it now so she just stands there and when you return from the lab she is seated at the table.
6, Sorted this. As soon as you enter the lab the event autostarts and you automatically walk up to the right position and the events continues as normal.
7, See No.2
8, See No.2
9, See No.2
10, See No.2
11, See No.2
12, which building(s)
13, I don't know what the problem is. I'll make it possible to go through the demo without walking through grass.

If anybody noticed any other errors that were'nt listed already just let me know so I can fix them and upload it with no errors in.

Hey guys, I'm back from sunny Ibiza and I've got a load of stuff planned out. I've mapped out quite a few towns and routes on paper so I can just quickly convert them into real maps. I've also added more detail to the story as well as writing a prologue for the game. On top of that, I've also been drawing some new pokemon and working on new features. And I did all that while nursing a hangover in the mornings!

Not updated for a few days because I've been preparing for college and haven't had the patience for my slow internet connection lately. Some info about what has been happening. I've recruited a graphic artist to my team and he will be designing and spriting all of the new Pokemon and new trainers. Here are some examples of his awesome work...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Pyroati.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Pyrotima.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Pyromundi.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Tropok.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Tropalm.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Tropius.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Stiray.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Mantray.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Tsunaray.png

And since SaintBeast is doing all of the graphical work, I concentrate all the extra time and mapping and programming, which is definately a positive thing for the game. Now for news on the next demo. It will be the final demo and will be out after Krazy has done the Battle System and I've had time to customise it, so it will be quite a while but it will be able to give you a clearer view of the quality you can (hopefully) expect in the full game.

If you go to the Pokemon Shiny thread then there is a download of Pokemaster_Shiny's pokedex which he put up a while ago.. That would make a good start. Sorye HK
October 21st, 2004, 04:31 AM
You can have a total of 5000 variables and 5000 switches. I don't
consider it as easy to use all of them.

Anyway, I especially like that forest map. Dead ends, plenty of directions
are what make a forest. You've done an extreme amount of work! One thing
that I would change is the coordinates of the text box so that the Y coordinate
is closer to the menu above it.

I actually had some of the PokeDex code done already. I think though that I'll change it and use a map instead of using loads of pictures. That way adding 500 PokeDex entries will be a lot easier. I knew you were doing the item system so I didn't bother with it.

My first screen of a functional diving system. I've just got to make a charset of the hero underwater.

@DM-That is an isolated snow town with a large snowy area around it.

@Daegon-Yeah footprints are gonna be added, sorta like how you get tracks in the sand on r/s.

@MatiZ Master-I've requested to my graphic designer that some sprites be tweaked a little bit already.

Thanks for the comments everybody.

Progress report: 25 new Pokemon fully completed, front, back and mini sprites, about 25 sketched out by SaintBeast. I'm still perfecting the maps of the new towns I've just done and SB is making new chipsets for them. I've started mapping Kantot recreating Hoenn by combining Ru/Sa and Fr/Lg chipsets to make it match with the whole game.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Cerulean.png
Cerulean City
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/phoenix316/Petalburg.png
Here's Petalburg City. I might change the buildings later, I'm not sure at the moment. I'm completely changing the battle system, to see if it's possible to use all pictures without teleporting to a different map (sorta like Booda has done with c.o.l) and progress with the Pokedex has slowed down until I decide what order the Pokemon will be placed (which is taking a VERY long time).

Me and SB have decided to change the way the Gym battles work slightly with special prizes being awarded for completing a set criteria during the battle, and only being allowed to use the same amount of Pokemon as the Gym Leader, just to make it a bit more challenging.

We've also been working on some other features which will make the game slightly more like tradional RPG's while still keeping the Pokemon style and not changing too much. But more on that when we've got enough done to show screens of.

I've had to change the way the game will be played because I have to make it so you can visit 4 regions and be able to catch 450-500. How it'll work is you complete the first region, Thaio, as you normally would. You are then given the choice of 3 boat tickets, Blue Ticket, Gold Ticket and Ruby Ticket. Whichever you pick will take you to their respective regions. After this though I'm having difficulty in adding in the other two regions.

Unless I only allow access to two regions per game which adds replay value but also makes it almost impossible to catch 500 Pokemon in two regions (with about 20 of those being Legendaries).

Due to the game being so big, SB and I are thinking of recruiting a couple more staff to the team to speed up the production rate. But we wanna get the game to a presentable stage before that happens though.

Well that's it.

Yeah I thought the same. I can't think of what else could be used to represent bugs other than trees without anything looking out of place.
Awesome screens phoenix! Where are the trainers going to be?
Thanks. There will be 5-6 trainers. 2-3 will be placed enroute to the leader so you have to battle them and the others will be placed around the gym where you can choose to battle them.

The chipsets aren't a problem as my graphic designer, SaintBeast, can do great things with chipsets, we just don't know what else to add.
I've written some pretty cool sidequest story scenarios recently and it's going to be a lot of fun programming that so should finally see some screens of the actual story pretty soon. Good idea. I've got a layuot done and added most of the info I have, it looks a bit(lot) plain though. Hopefully SaintBeast will sort that soon.

On to game news: I've just programmed a cool little Rock, Paper, Scissors sub game into Hidden Depths. I thought it would be something cool that you can play with npc's instead of just useless chat. It's supposed to work similar to YuGiOh Sacred Cards where pressing one button will chat and the other will play the game. You can win money from most people but some special ones will hand over TM's and Pokemon. Let me know what you think about this, I'm not sure if it strays too far from the series.

I spy with my little eye... minute little changes that should be made. I'm just going to be really picky now :)

1) Look at the pillars. They start at the roof and go to the ground. However, they meet the ground away from where the wall meets the ground. Because of the top position of the pillars in relation to the bottom, it looks like they're on a slant
***/-|
**/--|
*/---|
/----|
It's hard to explain, but I hope you get the idea :) Like I said, it's very subtle

2) Now direct your attn to the shadow to the left of the path. At the top of the path where the dirt merges with grass, your shadow is cut short in the jaggedness of the transition. In fact, almost all of the shadowed dirt looks out of place and too rigid.

3) Where's the guy that tells you what the type of the gym leader is, etc?

Nice job :) It's as easy as 1-2-3!

SaintBeast

Hey Phoenix! Heh, DarkHacking seems to be dead ^_^v.. So, I thought I'd check to see if you where talking about Hidden Depths here... I see so, much more, heh ^_^v.. Why didn't you tell me?

Anyways, hey everyone, I'm the graphics designer he's been boosting about. Thanks for the pitch Phoenix!

I'd like some feedback on my graphics so far, I did catch a few things like a complaint about Tropius. I choose him to be a final-stage starter, because well he's a great pokemon potentialy but being 1 stage takes all the fun out of raising one. Pokemon doesn't have alot of cool grass-types, and Tropius is definatly pretty awesome. Also, he's a Grass/Flying and thats a great advantage as a starter because he can learn Fly, like Charazard. Charazard was my favorit simply because I didn't have to piddle around with some otherwise worthless bird instead of consintrating on a versatile and balanced team. Tropius has to be the third stage though, it's too big for anything else, got to stick to Pokemon starter phonetics.. Cute > Cool > BadAzz

Sadly I've thought up 3 new starter lines I like more.... heh... but, no biggy, maybe they'll make it to the game. Well, I like the grass and water ones more anyway. ^_^ My fire-line for Hidden Depths rocks.

About special features in the game. Expect special trainers kind'a like rivals you'll encounter through-out the game and will get deeply involved in the story-line. Also, if you think the rock-paper-scissors is cool, wait til we get to the DDR style dancing to get through the Elec-Steel gym, or the surfing competition with Kammi Tsunami, Gym leader of the Water-Flying gym! That is, if we can do them......... Here's to hope'n!

So Phoenix, we've got a site? Let me know when you want me to do some real graphics for it, let me know what you need. I've been lazzy tonight, but I'm going to go work on a banner for us to use as signatures if you want. Weekend comming = more product. Got a few distractions this month though.. 9th is AnimeMeetUp, 13th lil bros b-day, 15th staff holiday party, 18th going to Orland for family x-mas get-together.. X.X

Feedback we like, yes.

Hey SaintBeast. Sorry I never told you about PC, I thought you already knew about it. This site was how I got to the DarkHacking one.
Guys, as SaintBeast has told you, we have been planning some big things that I've kept quiet up until now, that we're hoping can push our game to a higher level.
SaintBeast, you've thought up new starter lines? Can you e-mail or pm them to me when your done. Maybe both sets can be in the game.
You can start doing site graphics whenever you like, I'm almost done with adding the info about the game so we just need graphics to brighten it up.
We can use the first Tropok if you want, I assumed that since you redesigned it, you preferred the second one.
That graphic of the girl trainer is awesome, as if I'd expect anything less from you n_n.

DM, thanks for the comments, I see what you mean with the first two points. The third point though, the guy is just off screen.

Me again, just checking back.. I knew about PC, but since I met you on DH and we did so much posting there.. well, I didn't really think to look here for Hidden Depths. ^_^v

Ya know, I definatly see the point about the collums.. they don't look right, maybe I can fix that.. I noticed theres collums in the Elite 4 rooms in FR/LG, I might use their method. A rounded top, that ends basicly in a roof you see through.. Of course they won't look right if they are right on the walls.. Phoenix, think Roman Temple ^_-.. That was the idea for the Grass/Rock gym, the stylized palm is a destinctly Greek symbol.. I work at an art museum with an extensive Greek and Roman collection, sorry. =P Can't wait to get to the Fighting/Psychic gym, got some great ideas for it.

I do prefer the first Tropox, it's just better. I redid him just to make him stand, but it's not nearly as good.. Let me get my new starters profected, still playing around with the water one, then I'll scan the sketches.. They are Grass/Grass/Grass-Fighting, Water/Water/Water-Poison and Fire/Fire/Fire-Dark.. Though, I'm not so sure I really like my fire one..... Maybe it's just my ante-eater look'n ones are so cool ^_-

I don't think we should make the current forum available to the public because it has every current detail about the game. I'm fine about making an excoboard forum for public use. Although I think we should get the website done first. I reckon I should have it online early new year.
I reckon we might need a couple few staff, what do you reckon? Just a few people who know what they are doing and can help speed along the process.
BTW Have you checked out the map files? Have you needed to change anything or added anything else? Oh, and it's good to know your going to be working hard again, I'd like to see a few more Pokemon sprited, or even sketched.

I liked those pictures of the main characters. Male looks quite different though. Yeah, I think they're great as well. The heroes were supposed to look a bit different from Nintendo's ones, we like originality.

Eh, no I haven't been able to get myself to do much lately. I have been looking at our forum every day, so I've caught any changes. I need to get back to work, get back into the swing of it. I am excited about the game, just have to re-light my fire every now and then to get back to a project. The holidays have proven consumming, so when I do get time I really don't feel like it. If I don't feel into it I'll do a bad job. Just got to get some more rest truth be told, and quit having to worry about other stuff.. SOON!

Now that you mention it...SaintBeast, can you make the arms and legs of the male darker to match the sprite?

Actually, I liked the character better than the sprite. The sprite's legs are bent out and his paints being so wide make him like fat. Maybe scrunch his pants together to make them look more like they do in the picture.

Hey guys, a couple new screens I thought I'd show before the big update, I'm gonna make. This is Dawson Tunnel with Erika, the female hero. Avatar created the charset for me and it just looks awesome, doesn't it? The tunnel is a recreation of the tunnel from Pokemon Emerald (can't remember what it's called) with major and minor alterations and more directions to go.

Okay, I've counted all the maps I've done so far, including houses etc, and it comes to 83. The maps are quite big as well, usually containing a route and a town. Anyway I plan to finish all of the Kanto maps (2 sea routes left) and Johto maps (3 towns, 5 routes) by the end of the day.
And happy new year everyone!!!!!

The last demo was extremely thin on features because I'd set a release date and rushed to try and meet it. I wont make the same mistake again. SaintBeast and I have got a lot of work to juggle around at the moment and we need to have it finished for the demo.
The aim and purpose of this demo is to, hopefully, surprise and impress people with the quality and substance of the features in the demo and to get people excited about it's production, which really is what all demo's should be like.

Though it won't be easy, luckily my 13yo brother is awesome with flash and he'll help with the animation (for a small fee).

Wow, your even going to add the music yourself? I'm impressed! I programmed the damage calculations based on Nintendo's 'official' formula and gave it a test run using tackle and a couple of level 5 Pokemon as well as level 50 and 100, and the results seem to be quite accurate, so that's something to be pleased about ^_^

Usually I don't post in these threads, but this game has motivated me to do so.

Firstly, yes, Quetzacotl is a GF in FF8. There, it was portrayed as a bird-ish thing, but who cares. Yours looks cool anyways. As for me, I prefer Quetzal as the name, but either name suits it great.

Finally, I'm really posting here to tell you that I think nintendos next generation is going to disappoint me. If your game ends up being as cool as it looks, i may never play Diamond/Pearl. This looks awesome.

Any chance I could be a beta tester?

I found the way, it's tricky at first, but once you actually find the solution it's easy.

Nice one, if there's more than one of these in the game it's gonna be fun :P

I finally found a way too. It's very tricky. You just have to use your head. Best hint I can give. It's not just simple sliding to the next place you see. Otherwise you'll end up going in circles.

Good luck =) It's difficult. Difficult indeed. Took me longer to figure out that official ones so good job.

Ive found a way too. Like barry says it isnt the obviouse route. Its difficult good job. If all the puzzles are going to be as hard as that the game will be very enjoyable and fun!

lol, I'm glad you're all figuring it at. I just hope you forget the solution when you come to play it!:) I'll post a few updated screens of Firfrost Town and Cave for now.

As usual, i have been blown away. I absolutely LOVE the fishing spots idea in the ice. They are so 'cool'.

All puns aside, this game looks awesome. Now all I'll have to do is just 'chill' until it comes out.

I thought about fishing on ice with only a hole of water open before. It's cool that you got the same idea phoenix! Screens looks great, and as always, so are your mapping skills!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Genetic mutation provided the flowers with the ability to use the moisture from the snow as nourishment to grow and artificial lighting provided from above the town to allow the plants to go through the process of photosynthesis.;)

Truth: The map looked plain with just trees so I colored the flower petals blue and voila, snow flowers.

PKMN Sage - That's an idea both SaintBeast and I shared as well. I guess 'Great minds think alike.' :)

That's great. I was hoping you could fish in that hole. So there will be special ice type Pokemon in it I presume?

I like those little piles of snow and twinkling bits of snow falling. They remind me of snowflakes. I'd also like to say congrats on the great maze. The dougnhut covering a part of it really helped. Hope to see more of those in the game.

Thanks again guys!

Barry: - Of course. The fishing spot is for a few ice/water Pokemon. And to find a few secrets.
Krazy: - I hope you wont have to wait too long ;)
Daegon: - Doughnut?

*sits quietly and whistles away until the demo comes in*

But seriously, is there anything this game hasn't got? Well... apart from a jetpack. XD I wonder if he's going to implement that into his game XD

While I was eating a doughnut, a piece of it fell on the map and I found the way out of the maze. Sorry to confuse all of you.

lol, I thought everyone had figured it out now. Well, as DMMP said, if you keep going in the same direction you'll just be going in circles.

Hmm i suddenly saw that i missed a possibility and i found one way through the maze now :) When solving this kind of thing its helpful if you start at the end and think/move back.

When I couldn't figure out how to get out of the maze, it was because I kept doing many of the same things over again. If you notice your mistakes then you'll see what you've left out.
