View Full Version : Pokémon Acanthite – The GSC Prequel

Yeah, just dropping a note to let you all know that I'm alive and that I've done no Acanthite work at all recently ;) Kinda got 4 university interviews in the next month and I want to get into one of them at least!
In better news, there's a HUGE art update in the works by one of Acanthite's most loyal staff, Plateface who has been banned repeatedly on here :P Anyways, he's responsible for handling official artwork of the Acanthite Pokémon and he's just finished another large batch. More on this when it's all compiled for your viewing pleasure.

Argus isn't a gym leader :) He's not been in Merto long enough to have such a role, and he's more devoted to Team Rocket than anybody to balance another job anyway. Keep speculating! Hope the screens appeal.

no, make it the mom then. the moms have almost no role in any of the games, so that would be funny.
you: DAD! i have come to challenge you for the final gym badge so i can face the elite four!
dad: allright. lets do this son!
*they fight and you win*
dad: allright, son, you won. however you can't have the eigth badge.
you: what??!!?! why not?!!?
dad: because i'm not the eighth gym leader.
you: but then who is?
*mom walks in*
mom: oh hi there son! hey honey! *looks at the situation* dear, have you been tricking people into thinking that you are the final gym leader again?
dad: yes, i'm sorry
you: wait, whats going on?
mom: don't you see silly? i'm the final gym leader!
*you facevault*
or something like that
i think i messed up the dialogue in the end :(

I think the last gym leader could be Red's father - seeing as Red went against Kamon's father originally, maybe Kamon was fighting Red's father at the same time.
Wait, when exactly does Acanthite take place? I think I've got the timing wrong...
Fangking Omega
January 6th, 2008, 02:54 PM
Acanthite takes place immediately before the events of GSC.
I'm afraid it cannot be Kamon's mother as her role has been decided, so to speak. As for Red's father... well, I don't have a clue who he is! I can tell you though that the eighth gym leader HAS been chosen and while Kamon's daddy has a very important role indeed, he won't be the gym leader either. Keep guessing people, not a soul has given me the correct answer yet and I have no reason to believe any of you will ;)

The eighth gym leader always has something to do with the story. Or at least a side-quest.
Kanto - Giovanni - Team Rocket Boss
Johto - Clair - Dragon's Den Sidequest
Hoenn - Wallace - Helps you with Groudon/Kyogre/Rayquaza
Sinnoh - Volkner - "Feeling down" Sidequest

Have you ever heard the expression "Don't judge a book by its cover."?
You can't really judge the types especially when you haven't had any experience with them yet. Why don't you wait for the game and find out how they are instead of jumping to a conclusion?

Maybe instead of blindly asskissing a fangame you're involved in you could actually think about it for a second and see for yourself if it would actually make sense in a Pokémon game.
Don't even get me started on the Virus-type Pokémon themselves--maybe I would see a bit more potential if they weren't so poorly designed.

How the hell am I "asskissing" a fan game I'm involved in? I'm simply saying that you shouldn't judge the type until you've actually played the game. I mean, how is it "poorly designed"? You've barley seen much from it right now.
Edit: I know what you're getting at... simply because of the poor 'virus' designs that people have used in other games. The design has been more though out in Acanthite instead of just being thrown in there.

Anyway, the new screen are nice..., very very nice. I really am anticipating beta 2 for Acanthite, i remember it was close to being released the beginning of december than things happened so I would assume that it is still sort of close to being release. Either way I look forward to that day.

And I'm fairly certain that I'm not the only person who thinks that a Virus-type is absolutely ludicrous (Light isn't far off).
What I'm saying is that when something new is brought to the table it doesn't necessarily mean that it's good.
You're absolutely entitled to your opinion and I encourage that but I will fight my corner here, because if I wasn't in a position to back up my decisions then I shouldn't have brought the two types into the game at all. However, as it stands, they both integrate into the game with purpose.
No, not everyone is keen on new. Some have in the past suggested that we don't use new Pokémon at all, but had we done that, the outstanding design team that has created such a fantastic body of work for this game wouldn't have worked so hard to ensure that they aesthetically belong in a Pokémon game alongside existing Pokémon from the official games. Yes, this is a Pokémon game, but it is certainly not official and we have some artistic license for that. If anything it would be criminal not to try thinking outside the box and doing something new. And that's where new types come in.
It worked for GSC so it can work for us. Some purists won't play a game after the original red and blue versions, citing new types and Pokémon as being "poorly designed". They're not, they're simply new and not a complete repetition of the first gen. And that's how it must be lest the franchise becomes stagnant. Take the aesthetics of the old and inject the new.
Now you raise a wonderful point that new doesn't automatically mean good. So that's why I try to weight decisions I make carefully so that I'm happy that people will have as much faith in the concepts as I will. Sadly, some people dismiss non-official new ideas. And Nintendo and Gamefreak themselves can do no right to satisfy fans of the originals when it comes to their new ideas. I'm not catering for those people, I'm wanting to develop this project to give people a new spin on the Pokémon franchise.
Light types make perfect sense, I have no idea why you consider it to border on ludicrous. It is no more ludicrous than Dark in that it is the natural total opposite. Likewise, this game is about the opposites of good and evil, the conflicting loyalties of the protagonist Kamon, and a more literal symbol of good vs. evil with Anjewl and Diavil which itself required an introduction of the Light type to counteract Dark. I shouldn't have to justify Light type to anyone; it embodies purity and goodness in contrast to the menace and negative connotations associated with Dark types.
Virus is a little harder to sell to a fickle audience but I will make my case. A lot of it was inspired by the artificial Porygon program but also the creation of Mewtwo. A big focus of this game is the effect that human science will have on the future, and Virus types are in a way a symbol of human experiments and interference with life gone wrong. In this game, the MissingNo. "program" experienced inside the PC system is the result of partial imprints left in cyberspace on occasion by erroneous code sequences experienced during Pokémon storage, and albeit a corrupt partial data stream, it picks up Pokémon-like traits and as part of Acanthite's NON-CANON Pokémon world, it is counted by the authorities as being a "species" unto itself to the extent that it can learn attacks and evolve.
Likewise, other Virus Pokémon are sometimes the result of Pokémon hackers engineering threats to cyberspace often to hijack data streams and perhaps steal Pokémon.
In this game, for the sake of story, Professor D. Aspen is the noted developer of the Porygon system, a system that can take data form as well as physical, which is often evolving to keep cyberspace, particularly Pokémon storage, clean and error free. Naturally it would need to evolve and develop to counteract dangerous viruses and threats which too evolve, hence the Virus type was created to provide these threats.
As mentioned, part of this game's theme is the consequence of human experiments with life, or artificial life. A subplot involves Prof. Sorrell's Enigo project, completely manmade life. However, this project is almost sabotaged and Sorrell dispatches the incomplete life form into cyberspace to protect it and it completes itself through harnessing data strings and projections to create a fully operational "digital" body. It evolves and becomes more consumed by corrupt data, hence the Dark/Virus Arcrupt. Whichever side of the new Virus type you look at, it works in a logical way.
Very very clever people who've followed the Acanthite project may be able to make a connection to these early artificial Pokémon developments and something else. The Virus type is an integral allegory for what humankind is doing through risky science experiments; whether the endeavours of humankind are good or evil are symbolised by the metaphor of Dark conflicting with Light, and whether these endeavours will lead to a balance or not.
So in the end, like it or not, these two new types make perfect sense when integrated into the themes of the story and the events and surroundings of this non-canon angle of Pokémon world that we are developing. Dismissing them as ludicrous is however a little judgemental, and to be honest with you, utterly wrong. Anyway, your opinion is now informed - decide for yourself.
The font is indeed a FRLG font that I managed to pick up and Baskinein managed to implement it and modify it so that awkward special characters now appear properly. It will be distributed when we get far enough with development with the demo which is currently on hold due to a silly amount of hindering circumstances. Thank you for your patience.

you said about the virus types that they were created by humans - will we be able to create some in the game as a sort of mini game? like you have the option to make 3 pokemon but depending on what you do in the 'computer' it becomes only one of the three?

2. Is it a real game? Yes and No. It of course is really being made, but it's not an official game it's a fan game
3. Real new Pokémon? Yes and No. They are fan made Pokémon, made by the designers on the team that will be in the game, but they are not official.

At least kahlil has a bit better grammar than most, jesus.
Well, I've never really said nything about this project, so I'd like to now.
This looks great! The Pokemon look perfect and the feel of the game is there in the screenshots. You got something here, Fanking Omega, not that you need me to say that.
I wish my game can be half as good. Cheers, my friend! You're game is gonna be a masterpiece, I can feel it. If you need anything, I'm pretty decent at mapping, just let me know or just some moral support. I'm your man! ^_-

Not to be negative, but there's a few people that have said that they could help. But the only way to be truly sure is to go to the Pokemon Acanthite forums. They have a team, and a whole forums, dedicated to mostly the game. My advice is to just support them nicely without announcing it to everyone else. So technically, the are a few people who are "the man" or "the girl" for them. And by the way, I also advise asking if they need help through PM to Fangking. Hope this has made you time here nicer, as I notice you are newer here. See you around, Col. PS: There's no need to say Jesus, as you did. People forget their grammar once in a while. Just remember.

Man, are you sure you aren´t god?^^
I looooooooooove your Fakemons.
I wanted to list my favorites, but there are so many of them, so I only say: Skuntank for president^^
It´s so damn sweet, I will catch at least 2, one to evolve, and one to keep.
And it´s cool that RegisteelDS´s pics are in the game too, because I´m a big fan of his drawings since I first saw them.
When will it be out? (NO, just kidding XD)
Keep on working

Col...uhm...was that message truly necessary? You just literally bashed me on telling Fanking I'll be willing to help? ...that's not very 'helpful' as you said it was. And I said jesus, as in at least he got his grammar right, so give him a break. I wasn't bashing anyone or arguing for that matter. Oh well, I suppose it isn't much important to go into, anyways.
Well! Fanking! Like I said before: awesome stuff, man. I can't wait to see it it in action! Should be quite the treat! Keep it up! I hope you can give me some advice or feedback when I finally get my game up on the forums. ^_^ Later!

Let's breathe some life into this dinosaur of a fangame. We're alive and kicking and I've finally got something worth posting about.
First up, we've got a brand new Kamon overworld sprite courtesy of Pyro and myself. This sprite comes equipped with a bag at last, and it matches up to the one seen in the bag menu system. Here is the shiny new Kamon in action:
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/newsprite.png
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/healing.png
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/NewGym.png
It's worth noting that lights are now a bit smarter - the lights of important buildings will usually stay on after midnight now, whereas civillian houses and such go dark. Another cosmetic feature, but I like it.
Before midnight
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/BeforeMidnight.png
After midnight
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/AfterMidnight.png
Now a little more on this battle system.
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/practisebattle.png
Trainer battles are 100% differentiated from Wild Pokémon battles, a BIG improvement on our old system.
A wild battle for example
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/wildbattle.png
Starts differently to a trainer battle
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/Battlingsister.png
And trainer battles even have the trainer speaking at the end, as in the real games
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x191/FangkingOmega/victorymessage.png
Other news; we've done a tidy up of errors in the script. New items such as the Pokédex can now be added to the main menu. The Trainer card displays and disposes correctly, and we are in the process of adjusting the Pokédex function so that it displays the regional Merto Dex as opposed to a complete National Dex. The PC system may or may not be completed to a satisfactory standard prior to the release of a demo depending on how long that takes to materialise in a good, playable form. The entire beginning section of the game has been redone in terms of events so that it plays much better and the story isn't quite as rushed as in the old and horrible demo 1.
Also, our publicity campaign is continuing; a TCG set is in the works and so is a new website, and our current website has been updated with official art of ALL our new Pokémon. I'm available for questions so ask anything (sensible) at any time and I will be able to get back to you, and hopefully with an answer :)

As said before, these new screenshots look absolutely wonderful. The Kamon sprite does look excellent, too. The smart-lighting is also a nice touch.
One bit of crit, though. The Pokémon trainer's sprite looks quite a bit small. You might want to make her a little bigger.

Well Fang, you've done it again. Probably the best update I've seen in a long time!
But one thinkg I don't get is why you don't use the script that makes the game screen half the size, or in other words, not the doubled up size RMXP gives it. Most games have it right now, why not Acanthite?
Edit: Sweet.. I'm in the first post of this thread! Go me! XD

Really? Someone called poccil has an even better script that he uses with his Starter Kit. It's probably a lot more accurate than this one, you can also choose which resolution you want. Thing is, I'm not sure it'll be compatible with a different project. Doesn't matter too much anyway, a lot of people seem to like the 2x screen.

Thanks for the encouraging comments, everybody :)
We're glad to still be going and going well with this project. It's come a long way and survived.
I'm looking at a demo release around Easter time. It should be a good effort and should represent the kind of quality that we're aiming for. I'm not fixing a date because that generally jinxes it, so the rough estimate will do. The Easter period should yield a playable demo. It could have been sooner, but I have a theatre studies practical assessment in less than two weeks, and I'm performing in a musical over three nights during the week after, so I have a lot of rehearsals going on ;)

The first beta ( It was so horrible, don't even ask for it ) only allowed you to get one badge, I'm hoping you can at least get up to three.
Fangking Omega
February 22nd, 2008, 07:16 PM
The plan was to go up to two badges because the period leading up to the third badge is quite long and a fair number of new sets of graphics are needed for the interiors of Mezereon City. With the current demo outline, we have just about all of the graphics and almost all of the scripting done.
If most people would be disappointed with two badges only, I'm willing to spend longer making the whole Mezereon City section. It truly is an impressive city with some cool sidequests and there is tremendous acceleration in terms of plot development. It's probably my favourite location in the game - that or Overlake - and I was originally going to save it as a "surprise" for the full release, but it would also make an impressive finale to an already good demo.
The balance is this; two badges gives you a shorter game and an earlier release, whereas three badges gives you a longer game but also a longer wait for the demo.
You all decide.

But still agree partly with Heatran and partly not. It's true that after a long wait, you can wait a little bit longer, but when they are close to releasing something, you want to get it as soon as possbile.

February 22nd, 2008, 10:41 PM
I can't really estimate. If I work hard on it over Easter, then I might do enough to get it released with 3 badges within the Easter break. If I don't make it before I return to school, then I'd assume 3 or 4 weeks after the demo would have been released with 2 badges owing to workload in build up to exams. Depends how much I and everyone else involved could make within that time. I have all the music and scripting is in a good position, it's just graphics I'm missing for the insides of buildings in Mezereon.

Thanks for the comments :)
In regards to the length of the demo; a 3 badge demo is winning in the polls held at the Acanthite forum, BUT more convincing arguments have been made in favour of the 2 badge demo and as such I am considering a 2 badge demo to be the current leader. I hold the justification in higher regard than the vote alone. Keep your opinions coming in.
However long the demo release is in terms of gameplay, I promise you all that it looks and plays pretty well - far better than the horrific first demo that still gives me nightmares.
I'll not be showing much in the way of screenshots for a few weeks because I'm going to let the demo do the showing-off. Feel free to keep asking questions though, and I will answer them as best as I can.
In a desperate bid to try and provoke curiosity, I posted this on our official forums;
S.U.M. officials, including Kamon's father, convene at the start of Acanthite's story to discuss Project Enigma, a project of which little is known prior to its grand unveiling which is due to be in a few weeks. Yet old Shuyi and Koku legends may have already seen part of its consequences.
So, what happens when people play at being God? Should science interfere with nature? Or is it the next logical step in the evolution of both Pokémon and humankind?
And more importantly, what is Project Enigma? And how will its future influence the events in the present?
More on this groundbreaking experiment in time...
The project raises some of the key moral issues behind Acanthite's story. I thought it might be interesting to see if anyone on PC had any thoughts on Project Enigma.
Thank you to all for your continued support :)

Love the list :).
But why the following pokemon (In this game's pokedex order): Magikarp, Gyarados, Zubat, Golbat, Crobat, Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Tentacool, Tentacruel, Pichu, Pikachu, Raichu, Goldeen, Seaking, Machop, Machoke, Machamp (may had missed a few)
All the above are the only ones to appear in at least 3 of the 4 original reigons (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Shino) so far.
I'm not complaining or anything i just wanna know why these pokemon are appering in Mento when they appeared too much in the other reigons.

Those are the Generic Pokemon that all regions have to have.
Also, its called Merto :P

Least I was close to the name of the reigon :P.
Oh so they Generic Pokemon? Is it Gamefreak's policy to have them appear in every reigon?
I hope the Generic Pokemon won't be TOO common in Merto, I seen enough of them mostly in Hoenn (thanks to large parts of it being sea routes and caves).

We're trying to populate each area accurately. Fortunately, there aren't too many caves, and there are enough new Pokémon for every area anyway :)

I'm going to tell you something, and listen closely. The Original Acanthite demo is just a shadow compared to the Demo that is in progress. I doubt the next demo is even going to look like the first. The starters have changed and there are alot of glitches, I wouldn't suggest wasting your time.

Just to keep you all in check with what's going on.
We've settled on a summer demo with 3 badges, taking you up to Mezereon City. It does leave you with a delightful cliffhanger, so you should hopefully enjoy what we present in a few short months' time. We're feeling very positive about the overall quality of what we can deliver.
This gives me time to do my A levels and finish school and also allows the design team to tweak and rework our designs. In a daring move initiated by Nelson, aka Plateface, we've elected to have our weaker designs refreshed and improved, and ones that on the whole don't fit into Acanthite in hindsight will be replaced by stronger designs. We may even be seeing new evolutions for Seaking and Lumineon ;)
We're also replacing all designs credited to RegisteelDS. We are very fond of his work and that is why we used it in the first place. However, as it was initially given to us by a filthy, dirty, evil imposter, and we were merely allowed to keep them through the generosity of the true RegiDS, we feel that these Pokémon, while excellent, don't belong to us. We'd prefer to have a cohesive generation of Pokémon unique to the Acanthite team. Apologies to any fans of his Pokémon who were looking forward to seeing them in game; we hope to see suitable replacements for these, and in some cases we will be inspired by his concepts.
As a result of this, the official art is being redone to a higher standard; both designs and artwork will be improving. Nelson will be releasing art at approximately one new piece per day as long as it is possible and I'll deliver them to you here every so often along with progress updates if people are interested to see.
A final, final Pokédex will be revealed in due course upon the completion of the redesign process. Thank you all for your patience.
The first piece of new official art for the game is Splish. The design has stayed mostly the same, but this should show the kind of output we're hoping for with official images of our new Pokémon.

Does that mean you will be getting rid of: Helmite, Armapill, The topi line, Phylinx line, absi, prodisc, mawtress, the bamor line and most importantly, the awesomeness that is Fornette.
Oh well at least the awesome Gekkomodo stays. :)
I'm sure the designs you replace them with will be awesome.
Great looking Game.

March 19th, 2008, 04:01 PM
There's a question mark over Helmite and Armapill as they may stay more or less as they are - they're reasonably removed from the RegisteelDS originals and we were always going to have an armoured bug of the sort. The names are ours as well. We're not sure exactly what's going to happen but not too much will change there.
Topi, Tophai and Tophade, Phyllynx and Ambion, Absi, Prodisc, Mawtress, Bamor, Plator and Valior, and Fornette will all be removed. Fornette's replacement has been decided and we are keeping a Banette evolution. The new one is somewhat more original ;) Mawile will still get an evolution, and Prodisc is likely to be replaced with a Lumineon evolution. We're not sure what we'll be replacing the others with just yet.
As I'm posting now, I may as well tell you that Craguppie and Mountuna art has been released, so here it is :) Enjoy

No new game features to talk about just yet, I'm currently refining the events in the early part of the game. It's currently playing quite well up to and including Pinefall City, and random encounters are going very well in particular. Different things are showing up at different times of the day as planned :)
Some cutscenes have been improved considerably, and on the whole the dialogue is better too. Sorry for the lack of screenshots but as said already, there are no features that haven't been seen already.

Nah, has to evolve into Porygon-Z as we don't ignore the canon of the franchise but thanks for the suggestion.
What I have for you today is a new-look Merto region!
We wanted as much authenticity to the Pokémon series as was possible. Now, the first thing to do here is the region on an actual Japanese region.
Based loosely on the Tohoku region of Japan, the new Merto came to life. If one studies the north-east part of the main island of Japan, that's what it is. You'll see a little peninsula on there at the top, and that was adapted into an island. The two main parts of Merto are Amoro (north) and Hokoh (south).
Tohoku was suitable for many reasons. It's quite mountainous and harsh in terrain, as is Merto, and also very scenic. Also, there are three sacred mountains which were adapted into the elemental triangle surrounding Tyridan Isle. Overlake City becomes a reference to the large lakes in Tohoku. And being a Pokémon game, we had some creative lisence over what else to do :)
There's a couple more towns and locations just to enrich the experience and spread the sections of the game out so it doesn't seem rushed. All in all, it should be a very interesting region to explore.
The map itself - thanks to Houndoomed for the basis and the graphics I used to put this together.

In other, less fortunate news, Nelson, lead Pokémon designer for our rethink of the Merto Dex and lead artist has decided to quit and pursue his own projects as well as kick-starting his studies. We're sorry to lose a very talented designer and artist who has given his all to the project, especially in the last year or so, and it is a shame that he pulled out before being able to finish the design process he put into motion. Likewise, his series of "official" art remains incomplete.
However, we can't afford to lose too much time and it's important to press on with this design process. It is my utmost pleasure to announce that established Acanthite designer KangasKid will be working with the very talented Purple Kecleon in refining the Merto Dex and ensuring that the Pokémon designs are all of the highest possible quality. So far, this newly formed design team has produced some OUTSTANDING work which will be available for your viewing in the very near future. This is certainly a profitable partnership bringing Acanthite up to the kind of quality that Nelson and the rest of the team envisaged.
Skume and Whiskunk have been replaced, as Stunky got there before us. Fortunately, something even better has come along and very soon we will reveal to you both diurnal and nocturnal normal Pokémon lines that will inhabit the early routes of the game. This is only the first in a series of improvements for the roster of new Pokémon in Acanthite.

Indeed, doesn't matter too much if we've deviated a little from exactly how it was done in DP anyway, we've gone for blue surfing routes (the route over water to the right is a bridge - no surfy).

@Wichu: I know, I made quite a lot of mistakes in the tutorial. And there's so much white space, it's annoying. I'm going to be remaking it to be better and more detailed soon.
I like the way you kept the blue routes. I think it would look a bit too confusing with all orange ones.

ever played diamond/pearl. if not i suggest you do and look at the town map. they have it orange yet at about 80-85% opacity so that it is see-through. I'd know they are sea-routes, if they are going over water, even if they are orange.

Yeah, it's Newbloom Bay. I've not got a map up of it yet but it's not too different to Olbranch town, which it replaced.
So! After a re-evaluation of our Pokédex kickstarted by Nelson, we have finally come up with what should be the COMPLETE list of new Pokémon that are going to appear in Pokémon Acanthite.
The redesign process, initially led by Nelson before his (temporary) departure, has been taken over by the remarkable duo of Acanthite veteran KangasKid and highly talented artist Purple Kecleon. The vast majority of new work is courtesy of these two. Nelson's contributions and suggestions have also been paramount in making what is, in my honest and thoroughly biased opinion, the strongest fanmade Pokédex on the internet.
Enjoy the new designs and we'll keep updating this thread with new design improvements and art.
