Sony and Toppan Printing, a large Japanese printing company, have developed a Blu-ray Disc based on a paper substrate which promises to be more environmentally friendly and secure when destroyed than traditional discs, they said.

Blu-ray Disc uses a blue laser to achieve a storage capacity of around 25GB or around five times that of current DVD discs. It is one of a number of new optical disc storage formats that are being targeted at applications such as storage of high-definition video.

Appearantly, a new Blue-ray DVD prototype disc has been developed by Sony, which has a capacity of 25 GB. It's made of paper, which makes them easier to dispose, and more environmentally friendly.

Regardless of the storage capacity of any media, Anime distributors will always put 2-4 episodes on the media and slap on a $20-$40+ on it... so this probably isn't anything revolutonary for Anime fans who like to buy those DVDs. ^^;

What do you people think ? Currently, it's priced at:

The next step for the two companies is to investigate mass production techniques and possibly realise another goal of the project: a cheaper Blu-ray Disc. Sony currently sells blank Blu-ray Discs for around ¥3,500 ($32.20) each.

Can it handle spinning very fast though? I certainly wouldn’t want it to literally burn while it’s burning. X_x;

25GB would be an enormous blessing for backing up, I could fit all my subbed animé twice into once of those. o_o

That's pretty interresante. They'd have to put something in it to prevent burning Kairi, wouldnt they, I mean it's just a prototype. They have to test these things. I want one !!! 25GB is like... Every Game/Movie/Music File I have one my computer... Must have.

Nice, but that technology isn't available on computers yet. >_>

Well, the news of the Blu-Ray originally was revealed, as to be the storage media the Playstation 3 will use.

I think computer-related topics belong in OC, like the one Satoshi-kun made. Your call though. *shrugs*

Computer related or technology related, it still goes in Other Chat, it's not entertainment related.

I would imagine it to be a DVD-R at this stage, though I'm uncertain.

Are you sure my thread belongs in Other Entertainment? o_O

I'm not questioning your moderating abilities or anything Dakota, so please don't get offended. It certainly isn't my intention.

CDs can be used to distribute entertainment, but the actual discs are a piece of technology, which does belong in OC. ^_^;

I suppose so...

But if you can't read and write on it, then there's not much point in all that disc space...honestly, you could hold entire seasons of TV shows in one of those...

BOO ya!

Oh well, although in most cases it may not be necessary to have that much space, but you never know, there may be people out there in the world who need to burn things onto CDs and need LOTS of space to do that. =P I find that this idea is very cool, but I have trouble believing that it can even hold enough space on a disc that is made of paper. oO Is this some kind of super special paper, or just the type of paper that you write on?

Yes, and you can make backups of your Harddrives without using more disks. ^_^...

Yeah, it’s a backup medium too. ;p

Though I still think I’d take an external hardrive, as I don’t think these are RWs, rather one-time writes…

Imagine sneezing and blowing all your CDs away hehe....

This sounds pretty interesting! However, if they are made of regular paper, they would seem rather easy to break. I have to give the people credit though; I never saw something like this coming!

I'd love that, the 1.5GB's just aren't cutting it anymore. You think we could get a technology forum on PC?

Leave it up to Sony to make products like these first the Playstation the PS2, and now this... makes me wonder why Microsoft hasn't thought of designing any computers of thier own.....

Anyway, this does sound very inteesting, but I would imagine that you would have to be, much more careful with it, seeing how it can be cut with a pair of scissors (the article said).

Yes, because you can use them only once, and Direct CD isn't that good ether...
