Anyways, I named my guy the first three letters of my real name, which I'm not telling (X-D) and I named my Rival HIRO. Yeah, I'm really weird.

Owning the Japanese game already, I named my player character ケント (Kent). My rival's name is ジュン (Jun), which is a common Japanese name but is also one of the default choices in the name selection list.

But that has been the tradition throughout the series, so I think it's pretty safe to assume so.

to be honest, ill do what i usually do, call my player (who will be a girl) lauren, my girlfriends name and call the rival ollie (my name)

well, i think i'll keep with my actual gender this time and keep with my tradition poke trainer name: SAMSO, since i'll engage in WiFi activities.

i say "actual" cus well...XD since ruby i started to notice that girl trainers seemed luckier for some reason. i tested this theory out, and with using 6 different pokemon, it seemed that with attacks, my girl trainer was 12% luckier. why? i don't know, but my consistent female name is SAMRI XDD.

i think i'll name my rival my sister's name. that'll send her a message.

I've named myself "Cartman" (based on Eric Cartman) many times in the poemon games, but seeing how many ppl might also use that name, i'll just call myself by my real name :/

In the Japanese version, there is only 5 characters you can use, and 7 for the English version.

I don't know the Pokemon nickname characters though, but that doesn't mean anything for this thread.

I know this because my name is exactly 6 characters, and I can only write ****R, and V*****_ (*=spaces I use, _= leftover space) in every game I play Pokemon with. It's really easy to memorize once you play almost every game.

Using Roman letters is always a good idea in a Japanese game if you don't know hardly any Japanese (I hate trying to read kana). Thank goodness they have the roman letters...

I might also consider naming myself Smarty so some people here might know it's me, but because my online name has been Smarties-kun for quite a while now, I don't think it'll work as only a couple of people remember me as Smarty_Arty. ._. However, if they increase the maximum character limit for the main character's name in D/P, I might name myself Smarties so some people might recognize me if they end up battling me. Pierre, however, is schmexful so I'll probably end up using that.

As for the rivals name: I have absolutely no idea what I'll name him, (the rival is the freaky Wally wannabe with the blonde hair, right?) but it'll probably be something completely random.

...Hikari in japanese means "light" in english. Unless you want a rival named "light", you need to pick a different one.
