View Full Version : Am I doing something wrong?

I just started my Emerald again just for fun, and now I'm at the electric gym leader, Watson or whatever his name is. I'm having a LOT of trouble beating him. A) He taught all his Pokemon Shockwave and they all spam it over and over again until you die, B) He uses SO many Super Potions over and over, C) His Pokemon have the most annoying and strong attacks, especially Manectric..., and D) When one Pokemon uses Shockwave, I have to use a Super Potion, and then they just keep using it over and over so I just keep using the potion and I can't attack because they'd kill me with Shockwave. Oh, and E) His Pokemon are EXTREMELY fast and will always attack before me, so they have a big advantage. I was wondering if something was wrong with my team. I don't have many Pokemon that are a good level for battling him, but I use some to switch my Combuseken out and heal/use paralyz heal on him.
Pokemon used to battle
Cat, my Combuseken.
Level 21
Double Kick Cut
Rock Tomb Sand-Attack
Cat is my main battler in this. I just keep spamming Double Kick because it has a great effect and does good damage against electric pokemon. Sometimes I sacrifice other Pokemon just to heal Cat, he's that important. Most of my others are like 'AAAH IM DYIIINNGGG' right away when they get hit by one Shockwave, so I have to use Cat a lot.
Fox, my Sableye
Level 21
Astonish Fury Swipes
Fake Out Night Shade
Fox is another main battler. I keep spamming Night Shade with him, which is also a good attack against electric Pokemon. He doesn't live as long as Cat though, but he's a good helper. One thing that bugs me-- It says that Fake Out attacks first and makes the opponent flinch, and I'm like 'Yay! Now I can have an advantage!' but whenever I use it it says 'But it failed!'. It NEVER works so I don't really see the point of it. Can anyone tell me what it's supposed to do?
Bunny, my Ralts
Level 18
Double Team Confusion
Flash Teleport
Although she has mostly useless attacks, Bunny's Confusion helps out a little. She is also a low level for this gym, so she dies pretty fast. Once I was lucky enough to get most of Manectric's health, Watson's last Pokemon. He then used a Super Potion and proceeded to own me with Shock Wave. Over and over. Bunny can be a bit of a use in sticky situations, but I have to be really lucky to pull her attacks off because of the electric Pokemon's stupid speed. D=
Pokemon I switch in to heal my battling Pokemon (sacrifices)
Bird, my Wingull
Level 21
Steel Wing Water Gun
Mist Wing Attack
While being a good level for this gym, Bird is a Water Flying type, so she has no chance of even landing one attack. Whatever attack the electric Pokemon use, it OHKOs Bird. So, I don't risk attacking and I use her to make my battling Pokemon well again.
Elephant, my Gulpin
Level 12
Pound Yawn
Poison Gas
Waaaaay too low a level for this gym.
My strategy in this gym:
Take out Cat against the first Pokemon, Voltorb. Use X Defend. Get hit. Use X Speed. Get hit. Heal with Super Potion. If I can, use Dire Hit. If I do all this, I can proceed to own Voltorb with Double Kick and heal when needed.
Second electric Pokemon is Electrike. Easily owned with Cat.
Switch Cat out, heal Paralyz and health if needed. Switch him out for Fox. Do the best you can with Fox, spamming Night Shade. Sometimes I am lucky and he can kill Magneton. But sometimes I'm not and I have to get Cat to kill Magneton.
Last Pokemon is Manectric. This is the hardest one, being level 24. I take out Bunny and try to land a Confusion or two. When Bunny dies, switch back to Cat/Bird or Elephant (to heal Cat). Once Cat is ready to fight, use Double Kick. I might get lucky and win.
Of course, Watson uses Super Potions, so sometimes I have to improvise on that strategy. Am I doing something wrong? Any tips on how to beat this hard gym leader easier? Thanks in advance. I am really, really stuck. =P

I am going to move this to the movesets forum since it is asking for advice on movesets for your Pokemon.

Your first problem is picking Torchic in the first place, but that is a discussion for another time. Trainers that pick Torchic are going to struggle against Wattson unless they (a) catch a Geodude before-hand, or (b) level up their Pokes so high that Wattson's weak Pokes won't do much.
Geodude rips through this gym without any problems (as does Marshtomp, but again that is a discussion for another time), being immune to Shock Wave and making Wattson's Pokes resort to using the craptacular Sonicboom.
Your problem is that you are wasting turns on horrible items like the dreaded X things and Dire Hits. They are complete wastes, especially since you switch out so quickly anyway. You should be attacking during those turns. Your team is also full of Pokes that are frail to special attacks. Not to mention the fact that you need to level up your Pokes a level or two to give them a fighting chance, and evolving Ralts to Kirlia is a MUST since its base SDef is so incredibly pathetic.
Your best bet is to go back and catch a Geodude, or at least a Lotad and level them up (evolve Lotad to Lombre) and then you will find Wattson MUCH easier.

I just wanted to try out Torchic because I've already tried out both Treecko and Mudkip. =)
Thanks for the advice! I will work on this. =D

It only works the FIRST turn you are out. If it worked like that every single turn, it would be too cheap.

that is so not true. i always start off with torchic and frankly i haven't lost as battle to this day my record stands at 2345/2345 wins/battles. watson is easy if you have a combby lv:31 and another pokemon lv: 25 to win. normally i don't swap out unless my pokemon is paralyzed.

Thanks for proving point (b) of my original post. You leveled up your Combusken to Lv31 in order to even have a chance at beating Wattson.
BTW - having a winning streak against the weak AI isn't a real big deal. If you can go undefeated against other players that actually will switch out against a weakness, don't fill their teams with the same types, and don't rely on arithmetic to determine their moves, it might be impressive.

I shouldn't make a big difference in any direction; if there's an issue with any gym leader just level up a bit. Watson is terrible, Magneton will get taken out by almost any ground attack, one of the important types your team is missing. You might want to consider dumping that useless gulpin and getting something that learns magnitude early on.

Just go get a Geodude and kick Wattson's backside. If you do, there is nothing useful that he can do aside from Stupidsonic and Stupidboom. If his Manetric has Bite though, use Geodude's Mud Sport beforehand so that you can switch to something like Combusken and use Rock Tomb to really cripple it. Either that or just hope for the best and destroy it with Magnitude before it destroys you with Bite.

Mud slap is very bad in that gym...it will do okay damage to magneton, but it won't lower accuarcy because of shockwave. Geodude will rip through watson.

That was just one of those things I say to lighten up the seriousness of the atmosphere. You're either supposed to go along with it and add something humorous or ignore it.

My bad.. uhh yeah I use weedle in that gym. he does pretty well, since poison sting is super effective against magneton.

actually i levelled up Combusken to 31 to defeat may. it was my only pokemon apart from a kirlia. i could defeat waqtson with my eyes closed. level 26 combusken that still knows Double Kick can whoop him. i had a Blaziken level 41 when i battled watson. i knocked him out in three clear attacks.

I'm quite sure that's a huge accomplishment for you. But it doesnt hinder the fact that I use Aron with Mud- Slap.

what level is you your aron 30, 20, 10 or in between those figures. i had defeated Wallace with 2 fire types in my pack. all of their levels were lower than his milotic.
EDIT:By the way MrDreavus we all have adopted new techniques and strategies. the geodude thing is common so you might want to use it. i would suggest a graveller though as it would be an excuse to train your valmight geodude.

Ember would be useful if Combusken would have red HP points because of its ability.

Just use a Geodude/Aron and beat him easily. Or be smart and choose Mudkip because that makes everything really easy.

Then use a better fire move. Ember sucks

Aron's special defense is too low and it's too slow. It may have mud slap {Which isn't the best thing in this case} but it won't make much difference. Best to use a Geodude {Like mentioned above}.

Yeah I would've suggested that, but I don't think there would be a good fire type move that far unless the Combusken would evolve and learn Blaze Kick.

Synchronize, you make me laugh! lmfao
I remember when I first got Sapphire, I chose Mudkip... I got to Wattson, and was like "Oh crappola... Marshtomp is water type, he'll be toasted!", so I start off with other Pokes (Kadabra and Swellow at the time), and Kadabra takes him down with a little bit of effort. Then when I got Emerald, I chose Mudkip again... and I got to Wattson, and was like, "Oh crappola...Marshtomp is a water type, he'll be fried!", and I had no Kadabra, I had a Kirlia... (because female Kirlia/Gardevoir is much hotter than Kadabra/Alakazam) and Swellow. Well, they're taken down, and I send Marshtomp out, and figure I'll lose. He tries Shock Wave, and it says it doesn't affect Marshtomp. I was just... "W.T.F., mate!?", and my Marshtomp ripped Wattson a new one.
Hey, you learn by error!
