Dude awesome, I just love the in-game interfaces for the pause menu and item screen. And the way you made the battle screen not fully covering the screen is also very cool.
Awesome job man

Hey maybe you should stick to grouping the characters.
e.g: Lass/Trainer/Coordinator... Silk wants to fight.
Great graphics you have there :) on the way to perfection!

I'm pretty sure Kyledove keeps them to himself and a few other people.

They are able to be found, however, it is very hard. It took me a few hours to find just the first sets Kyledove has made and a few weeks of searching the net for enough to be useful to Game Designers.
This is a great game, and it's great to see that it isn't being made in RMXP. Keep it up ;)

Hey everyone.
Long time no update huh?
Well I'm here to break my silence now....
The newest feature of Pokemon Protectors is ready to be talked about.
It's the inclusion of the time and day.
I have screen shots to show, which I will post at the end of the post....
So first off time.
How does it effect the game?
Well it will influence what happens in the game as an overall experience.
With time now added in, I've added a tint effect so that the game will get dark when it's night, be that orange/red color for sunrise and so on.
That is one visual aspect to get across time.
Another that is both visual and will effect the gameplay is that the NPCs (Non-playable characters) will act differently depending on the time.
So for example, they will have business to attend to at different hours, or will go to bed and lock up their houses at night.
The marts will close at night.
There are some various other things- with the time system - which I don't want to talk about just yet :P
What about the day?
Well that's in the game too and will effect what happens in the Altar region.
From small things like certain mart's having sales on a Wednesday, or closing earlier on a Sunday-
to bigger things that will effect how the story unfolds....
Heck- people won't just be waiting around for the hero to show up will they?
Again, I won't go into anything until that's all fully coded into the story.... so you'll have to wait.
But trust me, it should get you excited.
Well about those screenshots I owe you....
Please note that the towns have not been fully populated- and that the team was just added in by me in test play
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/567/timeofday1jf6.png
Well this first image was taken at night by the lake just south of the starting town of the game.
Note that the day is Tuesday.
As you can see, the menu has been redesigned to show off the time and day.
Also, that sign reads that Hoenn lies south of there..... :P
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/5919/timeofday2gk6.png
This screenshot was taken in the starting town outside the player's home.
It was taken during dawn.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/4150/timeofday3ry8.png
This screenshot was taken on a Friday during the day time, in the second town- Briselwood.
You will note that I've also reordered my team around- which is easily done from the cross Pokemon bar.
Any comments?

So, just taught it was about time to show off more of this feature I've talked about.
As you know, I've added a day/night system.
But this isn't static. It's very dynamic.
The events change depending on the time of day- or even the day itself....
And the NPC (Non Playable Characters) even go on about their lives.
They do different things depending on the time.
One of these ideas thats developed is the "Home Getter" feature.
This was an idea I picked up off some tutorial website, but really liked it, so decided to go deeper then what the tutorial was explaining.
The NPCs acutally walk home at night time (well at a time I set), or go places depending on the time.
Here is a great example from Nutleaf Town (the starting town in Protectors).
*In the form of screenshots of course :) *
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/614/homegetter1xb8.png
Here is Mr. Burke watching some swimmers in the lake during the day.
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/6278/homegetter2ya2.png
At around 7 P.M he decides to move on.
Where does he go?
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/2755/homegetter3oj4.png
Well, home :P
http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/4949/homegetter4wf2.png
If you go back down to the lake at night, you will notice that Mr. Burke is still in his house in bed.
You will also notice- most of the swimmers have gone home. There is only one left!
Whats great then is, Mr. Burke will come back out around 7A.M.
The swimmers will also come back around different times to each other- and leave at different times!
Really neat feature. And fun to watch in the gameworld.
What do you all think?

Neo-Dragon
April 14th, 2008, 03:03 AM
Hey everyone, I was just reading over the thread and just taught I'd answer peoples questions.
Hopefully, I will be able to answer most of them :).
@TrueEvil: I'm not 100% sure on what your asking me? What do you mean tilesets? As in a complete FR tileset for example?- I decided to go with a mix of Kyledoves tiles and some editing Fr/Lg tiles I just re-did myself.
There are custom buildings in the game- like each teams headquarters has its own custom building- but thats about it really.
@MarineAngemon: Yea, that was probably Silk2. You can find a demo of it in DarkPegasus' "Game Development Archive" thread.
@Skele: No, the attacks are based on the stats from the FireRed/Lg games. Sorry to disappoint.
Someone also asked what am I do for lighting effects in regards to the day and night system.... I'm guessing they mean will houses have lights go on and stuff.
At the moment no. But it is do-able. I could probable use a picture to achieve it. But again- right now- no there is nothing in place.
Em.... Not sure what other questions there were.
Well feel free to ask away now and I'll answer them.
As always, thanks for the great comments so far.
Hope to keep hearing from you all, and please- if you have any suggestions (or again- questions) feel free to post them!

FINALLY! A game NOT made in XP! My comp is too old & slow (I often call it 'dinosaur') to run those, but not this one!!! WOOT!
Interesting battle layout; it makes it feel more like you're actually battling right where the trainer stops you. And the 'choose your destiny' thing is something I've seen other people want GF to implement for god-knows-how-long; why has GF never done this?
*EDIT* Great idea on the night/day thing; it makes the people seem real.

It goes without saying that this game's one of the best over here. A lot of games are started every single day (and a lot die everyday too), but just a few manage to get where Pokémon Protectors is. It's incredible to see someone work so hard on this without giving up, specially when working on a so-said "low-level" RPG Maker version like 2003.
Also, I think it's nice to point out that this game goes in the opposite direction of most games, since it's unique in pretty much everything. While all good games I've seen here over these years try to copy the GBA Pokémon games in every aspect (what is not necessarily a bad thing, since they do it almost perfectly), Protectors has the creativity as it's main aspect, with graphics, storyline and systems that avoid the GBA-style when possible.
Just to give you, Neo-Dragon, a head's up and, of course, to say "hello" after a few months of retirement. Be sure that you inspire us -- game makers -- to continue our works even when we're tired, specially because of your patience and determination.

This is definitely an amazing game. I love all the features, and Kyledove's tiles look pretty good as well. The "home-getter" feature seems to be pretty nice. And yes, it's definitely an original idea as I've not seen it being used in other games. The only thing that I can say is that your maps are kinda bare. Try innovating with grass and water. I do realize that using RPG Maker 2003 is difficult, and that you're limited to a certain amount of tiles, but try playing around.
Also, I hate to seem desperate, but do you have any idea as to when the demo will be out? I hope it doesn't lag, because having so many systems might make it. At any rate, keep up the awesome work. ;)

Thanks guys (and one gal) for the great comments.
It really is great reading the comments as it's keeping me motivated. Alot of people forget we do this in our spare time, not as a job so updates are slow, and with a game of this size it's not always easy to stay focused. Ha.
Eh,
@AtomicReactor:
The swimmers, come from the far end of the water- so until you get surf, you can only see them swim up the water at the begining of the game- then swim south to go home.
@Bulletangel:
Thanks for the PM, I've replied to you.
@Azura:
Haven't seen you around in awhile ha.
You still working on your game?
Anyways- it's great to see you put "low level" in quotation marks. I think thats a huge stigma of RM2k3.
While I admit I'm a pure fan boy of this maker, I think I have a right to defend it. YES, I did just admit I love RM2k3, BUT, I think I can do nearly anything I plan on programing in it (see my update at the end of this post for example lol). People shouldn't always put it down because it's out of date.
It's good- I mean -GREAT - to see you love the creativity of this project, because I think that's it's(the game) biggest draw.
When you see this game play out- with all the systems in place it truely is great.
I remember reading a professional game developer say "the key to good design is having fewer game mechanics".
I agree- but disagree. I think if you can make all the game mechanics seemless, and flow with gameplay- thats good design.
And thats my thinking behind protectors!
A feature like home getter is not really a feature per say- when you are playing this game, you will not notice it. But if you do, you will say- "heh- that guy just went home- neat touch." lol.
I recently let 2 of my friends play through the start of the game up until where I've finished programing the story to.
They both played it differently and had a great time. They said they loved the choice feature.
One of them- decided to- during the opening interview with the police- not tell them about Team Magma (which made his REP with Team Magma go up and other teams go down),
then went into a mart in the second town- stole from it, got barred from the store-had a battle with Team Rocket (which made his REP with them go down even futher) and just caried on what he was doing.
These systems all linked together and thats what he told me he loved. He had this freedom to shape this game.
It was a great feeling- and when the Release Candidate comes out- hopefully people will be telling me all sorts of stories on their gameplay experiences.
@Archayos:
I do agree with the maps looking really bare. My mapping is an area I'm never happy with. Let me explain.
I plan out everything in this game. I have 3 word documents called my "Dev sheets." I detail every thing I develop in these, from planing stages- to the variables I use when coding.
It's a great way to keep track of things (like lets say, I want to change a picture in the battle system- the HP bar or something- well, instead of routing through the code- I just look at where I wrote it down and see- "Oh, HPbar= Pic13" or something like that.
So whats this got to do with mapping?
Well the region is really really planned out. I've decided to even go as deep to giving the region it's own folklore (something EVERY official game has, but NO fan game has).
I don't really want to type this- but - I've even got 3 regions fully detailed (that saying- remember, I'm doing the "Release Candidate" system- where when you download the game- thats it- but you can download updates for the game to keep the experience going- and that includes new regions ha).
I totally regret saying I've more then one region planned HA.
Anyways- so in order to bring these really planned regions to life- you need great NPC dialog (tell the player eveything in game- no point explaining something in your opening post of the game- then in-game leaving it bare- but you need good mapping.
Mapping is the foundation of the game in general.
I've revamped- or redid EVERY outdoor map in the game at LEAST once, and I'm still unhappy with some.
The maps later in the game are better- but because I mapped the earlier maps first (up to around the 3rd Town/City- I'm never happy with them.
So these might always change right up until i release the game. lol.
I will try and work on them.
In regard to lag, I really don't know. Durning the Beta testing I will find out I guess. I've got a Dell XPS laptop- which is a high-end laptop- which means I experience no lad whatso ever.
Hopefully, I'll be ok, and noone will have any problems- there are hardly any events running along side another event, but things such as the time of day running while a battle is in place (since battles happen on the map in the window) might take it's toll on old PCs.
And a demo- is not coming out per say. I wrote about this before- and even in this post- I have something that I'm dubbing "Release Candidates"
What this means is- when I release the game- thats it, thats the game, but I can release updates- that the player just drags into the game folder- updates any files- and can play the game with their save file still working.
It's a great idea- so in theory, I could release the game with only one town- then in an update- have more maps. Drag the maps into the game folder- then start your game- with your saved data and the maps will be there.
Again- it's really neat.
Small Update
Ok, thats a huge post- but hopefully it answers questions. I love hearing what people have to say- then responding to it (in detail clearly by this post :P), so feel free to keep posting and asking and whatever. lol.
But-
I don't think I said this on this forum (I said it on my own), but I've started to revamp the entire battle system! Well not the look- just the coding.
I've coded in EVs and IVs now! The official battle damage maths (I always had that- but now includes the EVs and IVs in it's maths)-
a detailed formula for how Minerals are dealt out after battle (remember Minerals are the new way to leveling up Pokemon in this game).
I've fully coded in wild battles- with enemys using attacks and at different levels- using different attacks.
I've coded in the official formula for working out a Pokemons stats at ANY level.
This is great for the battling.
And I've also finished coding trainer battles!
The battle background changes depending on the battle (like wild- trainer- gym) and also has different tones depending on the time of day!
Remember- I'm trying to do this official, and thinking long term- so while many games promise it- in time I plan on having as much Pokemon as Rm2k3 will let me.
So the way the coding is working- I've started with Kanto Pokemon (for the varibles- 1 =Bulbasaur - 2=Ivysaur and so on).
This is coding just like the national dex numbers. So it's easier on me.
Mewtwo is the main focal point of the story arc of any Team you join in the game- so that means- the way I'm coding- I should hopefully at least do all the first 151 Pokemon.
But as of right now- only the starter pokemon and their evos are FULLY coded. While base stats of the first 20 national dex numbered Pokemon are in the game.
I'll have some screenshots to show off if I get some more replys.....
Well that took a really long time to write- so please write back on anything I've said here ha!

Ah. Thanks for that detailed reply. It really helped clear some stuff up. But your maps REALLY have to look a bit more "busier" if you get what I mean. As I've noticed, your tall grass is barely visible. I'd suggest using a simple recolor of the normal Pokémon grass. Edit it as much as you like, but try keeping the same shape. It just... looks good. Here, I found this. Perhaps this'll come in handy?
Damn, I can't post links until I have 15 posts. I'll edit this post later.
Now coming to your grass recolors, you've really inspired me to make one for my upcoming Pokemon fangame. I can't help but say that I love them. Kyledove's tiles are a bit duller than this, I think, but I'm not sure. Either way, it really looks good. If I'm not mistaken, long ago, were the message boxes about... let's say, 50% transparent? They looked really good back then, so I think you should keep them like that. The same goes for the menu.
Next comes your story. I liked the part about the crash, and how you get to choose what your destiny will be, but the "omg, teams looking for another legendary pokemon like usual" is somewhat of a turn off. And as you can see, this part is the core of your storyline; the part where it crawls near the generic pile the most. Invoking some kind of a twist in that area might be a good idea.
That's about it from me. I'll be looking at this game often.
Neo-Dragon
May 4th, 2008, 07:02 PM
No prob.
Glad I could clear some stuff up for you.
You don't like the tall grass? You mean this tile ye?
http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/4170/tallgrassmt1.png
I might make it a shade darker to help it stand out more.
Also the maps haven't been detailed in terms of the people who live in the towns yet- so thats why all the maps look bare, noone lives in them.
I think that when I get around to doing it, they will look alot more intresting.
Well hopefully ha.
The menus and message boxes' still are transparent. It's up to the player to set them. You set them transparent in the in-game menu. So don't worry :)
The story will get twists, the crash is something that was just an excuse to introduce the player to the story, and then it will go deeper. But like every feature in this game- unless I've actually coded it, I'm not going to post about it in detail if you get me.... But I will when it's done.

The picture of that grass tile doesn't seem to load for me. Anyway, what I suggest using is this:
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk308/Archayos/Grass5.png
Yeah, I'm sure that they'll look better with NPCs. Any map looks better with those. But that doesn't work out on routes. You can't fill up your routes with NPCs, that's not the way it is in the real games either. And too many trainers will annoy the life out of your players. The best alternative would be to start innovating with your water autotile. Just randomly start putting water in places on your maps, and you'll see that it'll become comparatively better.

Yep. Your new storyline is better now. But yet, I still think that invoking a plot twist in the place where the crash occurs would be a good idea. Even though it's just an excuse to introduce the player to the story.
Anyway, I'm glad to see that you updated. The topic had nearly made its way to the second page, which is pretty bad for a project like this. : D

Thanks for the feedback guys. Keeps me motivated. Cheers. keep it coming.
Well....
Just finished working on the PokeCyber.
So, to start off the update, I'll just post about the first option and it's function.
The PokeCyber is a key item that will be given to the player at the start of the game. Well after speaking to Oak. It's a device kinda like the PokeGear from G/S/C games. The PokeCyber is connected to a network.
Because it's this "Wi-fi" style device, I can add some pretty nifty features.
As just mentioned above, I will do one feature each update, so here is the first.
*On the infamous Test map from Protectors, with a test team of starters, I have the PokeCyber in my bag lol.*
After selecting it from my bag, I'm taken to it's (the PokeCyber's) main menu.
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/6262/pokecybermainmenu1ly1.png
There are 4 options.
Pokemon Storage.
Phone.
Minerals.
Cheats.
You may have questions for some options, but I am only going to talk about the Pokemon Storage system for now.
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/9569/pokecybermainmenu11su1.png
The Pokemon storage system is the "Bill's PC" of Protectors.
You have 3 options in Pokemon storage. Deposit. Withdraw and Release. well 4 with exit, but blah.
Depositing Pokemon will allow you to deposit up to 5 Pokemon off your team. You must keep at least one at all times. You can only store up to 12 Pokemon to begin with
It's very straight forward.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6439/pokecyberdepositpkmn1bs0.pnghttp://img227.imageshack.us/img227/8443/pokecyberdepositpkmn2ee4.png
Withdrawing Pokemon is also very straight forward. You select which Pokemon you want to withdraw using the grid menu (meaning you can use all 4 arrow keys to navigate the menu). Press enter and Pokemon is on your team if you have space.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/9034/pokecyberwithdrawingpkmsr4.pnghttp://img357.imageshack.us/img357/1332/pokecyberwithdrawingpkmxu5.png
Release Pokemon (no screens), brings up the same style selection menu, this time, you can chose a Pokemon off your Team to "release" into the wild. Because at the start, the PokeCyber only allows 12 Pokemon in storage and you can carry 6 on Team, you may need to release some Pokemon to make room for more.
So this option is included.
Also you may notice on the top left of the main PokeCyber menu, there is a signal bar.
Depending on where you are in the region will give you a different signal.
For example, in a big city, you will have full signal.
In a small town or route, you might have 2 bars (medium) or 1 bar (weak signal).
In caves, you will have no signal.
For test propose (well just to take the screenshot), I showed what happens if you have a weak signal and select storage.
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/5400/pokecybermainmenu1weaksdz2.png
You cannot use certain features depending on your signal strength. This adds a bit of strategy when going on far off routes, mountains, and caves.
Also note, the PokeCyber itself was created by Prof. Ashbourne (of an unnamed region to the south), and it's online storage system was developed by Prof. Maple (of an unnamed region to the north).
So tell me what you think people.
Remember, try not discuss the PokeCyber's other options until they are revealed :P

@Captain Arcane: I think you mentioned it :P
Thanks alot man!
@Atomic_Reactor: I hinted at it yeah. I don't want to go into it yet, because it's only planned on my Dev Sheet and not coded and I only like talking about stuff I've done. But as I said, it's in the planning stages to have update cards- that will update the PokeCyber to store more Pokemon in storage....
@Mackoo: The homegetter feature as I call it, is what I want it to be known as a "nice touch" - not a "feature". It's attention to detail really. Nothing more.
Anyways!
Update part 2 of the PokeCyber feature.
*Please note: this is again, on my infamous test map- with test settings*
This time, I'm skipping the Mineral feature and going straight to the PokeCyber's 3rd function, the phone system.
I've got a mini screenshot walk-through again to explain this.
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/8087/phonesystemshowcase1fh1.png
So on the PokeCyber menu, select the phone option to bring up the phone itself.
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/6385/phonesystemshowcase2jh5.png
This is the phone's main menu. You have 2 options. "Phone book" or "Dial."
The phone book is under the options- and the keypad itself is beside the phone book.
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/103/phonesystemshowcase3de8.png
Selecting phone book option will bring the menu to the phone book section or box. Your phone book will store the numbers you get throughout the storyline of the game.
In this test, I have granpa's number and Prof. Oak's number.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5262/phonesystemshowcase4hm5.png
So the next option under phone book is Dial.
This will take you to the keypad.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/8407/phonesystemshowcase5ev1.png[img]
The keypad is straight forward. It's a gird style menu, so you can use all 4 arrow keys to navigator the cursor.
[img]http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7902/phonesystemshowcase6gk4.png
Just press enter to select the number you want, and press ESC to cancel your last number of go back to the phone's menu.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/3041/phonesystemshowcase7bt5.png
So after selecting 7 numbers, you can call the number. All numbers in the game have 7 digits.
EVERY NUMBER IN THE GAME HAS A MEANING.
For example, your Granpa's number is 4726721- which is deciphered as "granpa1".
The number in the screenshot 4438791 - which is "HIEVRY1" - a little joke to you reading this....
So it's this little neat touch with the phone that makes it interesting. Trough the region, you'll find different numbers, by talking to random people- and you will be able to ring them for a little easter egg. Also, each numbers' meaning is generally light-hearted and fun.
The phone is also how cheats will be put in (cheats are again- funny words but I aint sayng what :P). But that's another update :P
So again, keep the comments and feedback coming- after all, I coded all this with RM2k3's events ha!

Cheers guys. Really glad you like it. Makes the hard work worth it.
@Atomic_Reactor: Haha. That spelling is something I've taught about since adding granpa into the game. I remember when I started the game, I goggled it, lol, yeah sounds crazy. But I noticed, the spelling "Granpa" - leaving out the letter d was something a kid would say. Making it almost a nick name. Like how, a young kid only knows its mother or father by the name used in the house (like mum or mam).
That's why I chose to leave it(the d) out. It's a srot of nickname the player has used for that character (the grandpa).
If you look at earlier screenshots for the storyline - I had the d in the word, but after deciding to revamp the storyline, I took it out. It makes him seem a bit more personal and adds a bit of character to "Granpa".
Keep the feedback coming, as I said, I did all this with Rm2k3 :P

yeah, I wanna add to the bit about adding the other parts of the numbers(the parts of 8 that aren't used) darker. you can't see them very well as of now. maybe just a few shades closer to the black?
Neo-Dragon
May 24th, 2008, 12:43 AM
@ Atomic_Reactor: I'll probably just end up putting it as "Grandpa" with the D just because after the game comes out- people will ask e the same question since they won't have seen that post lol. So I reckon tomorrow, I'll edit it all back to that spelling ha.
Yeah, I want people to notice I'm doing this with Rm2k3. I've said many times I'm a Rm2k3 fan-boy, but some people are fan-boys of RmXP and follow it blindly and say Rm2k3 is crap(without even trying it) just cause it's older and has no scripting.
So, I want people to notice, you can make a game with the quality of Protectors with Rm2k3.
@anyone who requested the number change:
Making the keypad numbers bigger isn't really something I want to do, since I'll have to re-code the menu just to display the cursor moving and other stuff like that- that's pretty time consuming.
I can make them darker, like this:
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/5210/betteraf3.png
(Keypad numbers are darker).
What ya think?
*Edit: Notice the spelling of "Grandpa" in the screenshot? Yeah I updated it :P.

Yeah! I agree! With rm2k3 you can do a lot of things even making a CBS ( Pokemon Protector as a proof ). But you need to put tons of effort into it. Because it was really hard to make such a good quality pokemon game like Pokemon Protector ( and for sure Pokemon Flower of the Moon ).

Thanks you two.
If any of you have any questions, feel free to ask.
I have a small update (well it took ages to code lol), but no screenshots yet.
I have now stored 371 attacks (all attacks from the 3rd gen games) into Protectors database, and of that, around 50 ar fully coded.
There will be NO battle animations for the first Release.
And another thing, the look of the attack menu in battle has changed.
I'll show a screenshot of it some other time.
But now, I have a request.
This is the first time I'm asking for this.
I'm looking for.... a mapper!.
Yup, I'm looking for someone who can design nice maps in Rm2k3. If I have any takers, could they please leave a comment or PM me some examples of what they can do.
I'm unhappy with the maps of the first region (I hinted that there will be more regions in the past). The later regions are fine, but the first region I want redone.
I would revamp the maps myself, but I want to finish off all those attack codes.
Cheers.

Okay, so compared to the last attack menu, this is a huge step down. But in terms of coding, it's a huge step up.
The last menu needed pictures, this is the text in the choice box, and the way I've coded it, it can show any attack name out of the 371, so it was just easier. Tell me what you think!
Kioshi
June 1st, 2008, 02:21 PM
You should make it so that the Attacks are in the battle screen and splitted like in normal Pokemon games so 2 left and 2 right. I dunno if you don't want it like that but it would be better.
But if you learned something while coding that, then it's of course prefect^^
Learning is the best way to make something better. ;)
Neo-Dragon
June 1st, 2008, 06:11 PM
I can't spilt the attacks. I did. Look at the older posts and you will see it, but all of the attack names were sprited in paint, letter by letter. And to do 371 would just take forever. So I'm using the default RM2k3 choice system, and you can't change the position of text or anything.
Atomic_Reactor

Well, I think I should point it out. This is just my opinion, I think the older one looks better. It looks more interesting and special but the default show choice system look sucks.>.<
Hope you understand. ( My opinion, nothing much )
Neo-Dragon
June 2nd, 2008, 12:35 PM
Yeah I do, and I, 100% agree with you. But as I said, it's a coding matter.
The last attack choices was a nice menu- in the battle window, and the attacks were done in paint. What I mean by that is, since Rm2k3 won't let you put text anywhere on the screen, I had to "sprite" the attack names. I done it in paint, letter by letter.
Now, the coding is still there, I didn't delete that event, so I could still use it. But as I said, I have around 360+ attacks (all 3rd gen including the shadow attacks from the gamecube games). I don't have time to sprite each attack word letter by letter in paint. It would take ages ha.
So I came up with a system where I could display ANY attack name in any 4 of the slots in the choice box- and each attack would work right. But because the coice box it stuck on the bottom, and it's a default RM2k3 thing, it was just easier for me to do rather then do it the long way.
Again, in time, I can go back, sprite out attack names and use that menu.
BUT, FOR NOW, I need to keep that ugly choicebox attack menu just to hurry the dev process.
So, I want to say sorry to you guys, cause I've tried to be slick with all my menus and windows in the game, but this one just takes the look off. But please bare with me for now.
Cheers.
On a side note, Don Patch and Atomic_Reactor have been added to the team as some map makers for me.
I've already used a nice little map from Atomic_Reactor which is Vanmir, the 7th place you will visit. I added in a boat and dock just to fit in my plan of the region. I'll have some screenshots later.
Archayos
June 2nd, 2008, 12:59 PM
About that battle system screenshot; yes, I do know that using the Show Choice command is a lot easier and all, but this terribly reduces the quality. It just doesn't look as awesome as it looked a week ago. I've got a suggestion though...
Why don't you make a blank show choice command (which shows no text) and put pictures containing the text at the correct co-ordinates over it? That way, the interface will look good and it'll be as easy as a normal show choice command (apart from the fact that you'll have to erase those pictures).
Neo-Dragon
June 2nd, 2008, 01:33 PM
No, see it's nothing to do with the menu at all. It's the words themselves. They WERE pictures. But because I've added in all of the attacks, it means I would have to make all those pictures of the words.
I'll show ya,
This is a screenshot of the old attack menu:
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/6758/attackmenubulbasaur1hy3.png
Each word was a picture like this:
http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/9338/attacksemberxy3.png
See, the coding is still there and it works perfect. But I would have to make each attack name a pic. And since I was doing it letter by letter in paint (like copying and pasting the letter in position to make the word), I think it would take too much time.
If people want, I can keep this menu, as it is so much better, but it will take me ages to make the words.
If someone wants to help, be my guest, here is my sheet I was working off.
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/7966/atklistei4.png
It would be a huge help, and I would put that menu back in the game.
Also, every attack is stored alphabetically, so if someone will do it for me, start with "Absorb" and work your way down.

Anyone remember you could steal from marts in this game?
OK, so it has been awhile since I took time to look back and try code everything I planned for this side of the game.
My plan was not to make Grand Theft Pokemon, but it was an aspect of gameplay I wanted to explore.
One of the first lines I wrote in my first Dev Sheet (I have 2 saved in my documents) was for the game to have choice.
I wanted players to do things they couldn't do in the official games, to make choices in this world.
Each choice could not ever be out-weighted by another choice.
Meaning, I never wanted to put a big red light on "Don't do this", then a green light on "Do this."
The goal was for the player to make their own decisions and choices in the game.
So in the aspect that this is a game, and not real life.... What happens if you do steal?
So anyone remember, when you try walk out of the mart, with items still in your shopping cart, this happens?:
http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/97/wanted1ss2.png
You can choose to say sorry and walk back, or walk out the door.
Now remember you get barred from the mart, and you lose 2 REP points with the Protectors and Rangers?
What happens next....
Well here is what!
http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/9721/wanted1aie0.png
As if this was Grand Theft Pokemon, you get a 1 star wanted level! lol
(Screenshot was taken at night so that's why it is dark lol)
The police are now looking for you.
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/2549/wanted2by1.png
*Please note, that because it is night time, the grey tint of the Conscious Choice is darker to fit in**
If the police see you, you will have to run and hide.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2614/wanted3ua5.png
My wanted status is telling me to hide. You must hide for 1 hour game time (which is 60 seconds real time) to lose your Wanted level.
So there is an Officer patrolling just ahead of me. If I get in his line of sight, he will chase me.
So for the sake of the screenshots, I let him see me.
I regret it lol.
http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/5370/wanted4yi0.png
He runs after me, pretty much at the same speed (slightly less, but ever so slight) as the player's running speed.
You can see that my wanted status is telling me to run. And you have to.
YOU MUST BREAK HIS LINE OF SIGHT AND RUN FAR ENOUGH AWAY TO LOSE HIM!
!!Here is the thing though, first get your wanted level, the police put up barricades around the town to stop you from leaving. And you cannot enter buildings!!!
Your menu system is also disabled when you are wanted!
So anyways, I end up tricking him by running in circles and then ran far away from him.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/530/wanted5nm6.png
I had lost him, now I had to hide.
IF YOU ARE SEEN AGAIN, HE WILL CHASE YOU AGAIN!
So anyways, I hide for awhile.
http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/2584/wanted6fd2.png
As you can see by the Grey fence, I cannot leave the town.
So after waiting an hour game time. I lost my wanted level. And he left me alone.
Oh and the barricades were removed.
http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/8923/wanted7sl3.png
But what happens if he catches you????
Well lets wait till I get some feedback first :P
Tell me what ya think.
*Please note: All screenshots were taken in Birselwood Town (the second town)- with no people in them yet and at night time- thanks *

Wow ND! that looks great!
is it only one cop that chases you? or will it increase along with your wanted level?
o heres another question.
what happens if you steal in small towns?
like places that have no where to hide.
will you pretty much get caught automatically?

Thanks alot for the support for this feature. As I said, it's just a small distraction.
I'll answer some questions.
@Atomic_Reactor: As I said on my forums, yeah, your pretty screwed if your in a small town. I've also made it harder. The officer now runs at the same speed as the hero's running speed. So as soon as he sees you, hold shift and run! lol.
@scienceboy: The guard at the door doesn't stop you because he gets pushed back as you run out the door lol.
@Darkcookie: Nah, you won't be able to do that lol.
@DamianLeonhart: The idea is kinda based off GTA, but this aint GTA, so it's not going to be the same. So your wanted level is set depending on the crime. This hide and seek style system is a mini game per say, which is why I put in the limits......
@Goldude: I have no small user bars. If anyone want's to make one for me, would you please.
Anyways, I had planned to show off what happens when ya get caught, but I'm still bug testing it, and I don't want to post what's not coded yet.
Keep the feedback and comments coming (so I don't have to double post when the update is done).

Cheers for the userbar Archayos, I'll add it into the first post.
As usual, thanks for the comments.
Anyways,
Update Time:
Ok, so as of this moment in writing this, I'm pretty happy with how I coded this, so I guess it's time I posted it.
So what happens when you steal in Protectors- and get caught?
Well, let me show you via screenshots lol.
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/9097/caught1hv9.png
So when the officer grabs you, this pops up.
It's a quick time event.
You have a select number of seconds(normally 4-5 seconds) to input the 3 digit code it gives you at the bottom of the screen.
This code is also randomized.
The red cursor shows which number you must input.
Because I only had 4-5 seconds to input codes and to take screenshots, the codes and seconds will be different from the previous screenshot lol
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/6516/caught2ph8.png
So if you enter in the code within the timer, you will push the officer away and disorientate him which will give you a second or 2 to get a head start to start the chase again and try you luck to get away again.
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8898/caught3de8.png
But, if you miss a number of just run out of time, the officer will have a full grip on you and your caught for good.
http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/953/caught4kc0.png
He will take you to jail!
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/4754/caught5bx8.png
I have a really neat bit of code in jail too.
Your jail mates (in this screenshot, it's a Team Aqua Grunt), is randomized! So it's random between the 3 "evil" teams of the game.
But what does this mean?
Well, he gets talking to you, asks you why you are in jail.
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/3743/caught6jf1.png
What does that do?
Well effect your REP.
He will tell his "boss" about you and how "cool" this "evil" kid is. lol.
http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/1372/caught7ki4.png
So as you can see, my REP for Aqua is increased by 2. YAY lol.
Well there you have it, what happens if you get caught. Give me some comments on the feature please. Let me know what you think.

June 12th, 2008, 01:37 PM
Thanks for the comments guys. Means alot. I'll try have another update as soon as possible- although it might be a bit later rather then sooner.
So,
Some nice questions there.
I'll answer each one in the order they were posted:
@darkcookie: Yeah, for Team Reps, red means they don't like you, green means they like you. And ofcourse- in the middle (yellow), it's kinda neutral. Now, I'll go into all that at a much later stage of what that means in terms of gameplay (I kinda touched on it before somewhere), but because it's not coded, I don't like saying.
In terms of working for other people, you can only join 1 team, but it is possible to do other tasks for other teams. But the team you join (or if you stay on your own that's fine) will effect the story.
Again, more detail later.
@Atomic_Reactor: You guessed right, the more stars, the more numbers. The time will stay the same though, 4-5 seconds.
@Goldude: I don't even think I answered your first question (the one you quoted of yourself). It IS possible to get banned from all of the marts. There will be street vendors and mini marts, but in my opinion, being banned from each mart will be a bad thing as I will limit what you can buy in the vendors. So I know I offer alot of choice in the game, I think it would be wrong to get banned from every mart. But if you want to do it, go ahead lol.
In terms of black market stuff, if you join a team, they will have a vendor which will sell most stuff.
@GAK(first post): Raising your wanted level cannot be done- per say. After each crime, you wanted level is set. Depending on what you do will effect your wanted level.
@Gak (second post): Getting out of jail is very dull. Your Grandpa comes and picks you up and brings you home. Also, the day is increased by 1 lol. Now the reason is, everyone hates back tracking. So if you steal, when you go to jail, you will be picked up and taken back to Nutleaf Town (the starting town). So if you don't have FLY, I pitty you. Hope you saved before you stole :P
@Omega: Kinda answered above. Nah....
@Gak (third post- post above this): I'm dying for people to play it myself. I want to see what the reaction is to all this effort I've put in. But sadly, the game is nowhere near ready. Because I'm working from scratch, each system has to be put into place. That's every feature must be working before I can even start on the story.
I've only coded up until getting your starter Pokemon in the storyline, and the only reason I did that was to finish the intro, then test to make sure the battle system would work fine when you got your first pokemon lol. So I still have to finish off the battle system, re-do some mapping and alot more.
So I can't give ya an answer on that man.
Sorry.
Any more questions just ask away. Got comments? Post 'em.
Feel you can't post what you want to say? PM me.
I wanna hear as much feedback as I can.

June 22nd, 2008, 01:25 AM
@Atomic Reactor: No other crimes just yet. I don't plan on adding much though. As I said a few times, it's more of just a distraction from the main stuff.
So you won't be able to beat anyone up, but breaking an entry may be actually part of some team missions.
And ofcourse, when I say teams, I don't mean the Protectors or Rangers lol.
@legendarytamer: Yeah I've got some. Thanks for asking.
I don't even think my testers know who they are yet ha. That's how tight lipped I am about that right now. But they will have a nice surprise about a week before I plan on releasing anything. So random people who have shown support of from the start- make sure you check your PM box from time to time when I mention a release lol.
Anyways, Gak- I know you were looking forward to an update., I kinda got an update, but nothing big.
I am in the process of piecing the region maps together.
So making it all seem like one big outside map (just like normal games) was the first thing I did- since ofcourse I use several maps for towns and routes. But you will be happy to know you shouldn't notice ANY transition issues between outdoor maps- so it will feel like one big map.
I've added in showing the town names to all of the completed outdoor maps and routes- you know that message that shows at the top of the screen when you enter a town or route - yeah that lol.
I've also added in the signal strength for the PokeCyber on each map.
In general, its full signal in towns and cities- 2 bars full on routes- 1 bar in forests and no signal in caves.
Hopefully I'll have something to show off, if not, I may post some random screenshots within the next 2 or 3 days (or maybe tomorrow if I'm bored)- I would post something random now, but it's 2.30 AM my time, I'm going to bed, I'm wrecked lol.

EDIT: Whoops, I'll answer some questions asked.
@Gak's first post after mine. It was already answered by Waudby lol.
@DarkArcanine: In terms of battle animations, it's a design choice to not have them in, not a "problem."
Protectors defo won't have the battle animations in the first release. Maybe in the future.
As for D/P attacks, I've already said, no D/P attacks aswell.
Again- at least for the first release.
@Gak: The pokecyber signal was already mentioned in the Pokecybers post.
It's just like a phone signal. So you won't be able to do anything if you have no signal. And limited amount if you have a weak signal.

Update:
"Tools"- the new HMs.
So first off, I would like to thank 2 guys off my forum (RPGMAKER2003ISHARD and Atomic_Reactor) for helping me develop the ideas for this.
If you have any ideas- make sure you come over to my forum ad post them in the idea thread and I'll see how they work out.
These guys gave me some inspiration for this.
Anyways.
So, tools.
What are they.
Well it's answered above.
Tools are the new HMs.
Tools are the new KEY ITEMS that help the trainer traverse the land.
I will give you a screenshot walk through of what I mean.
NOTE: All maps featured in the screenshots are not final and do not have NPCs (Non playable characters) in them!
The first map shown is a forest.
The second map in on Route 103.
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/4797/toolset1of2.png
So when you first get the first "tool" (I'll show next)- you get a tool box, or, tool set.
This is represented by an icon in the Key Items Pocket. The number (in this screenshot - 2) is the amount of tools in the tool box.
Pressing enter will allow you to see your tools, and view what they do.
So what are your tools?
The first is the Small Axe tool.
The small axe allows you to cut down the small trees you see in the official games.
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6742/cuttreedown1ft9.pnghttp://img396.imageshack.us/img396/58/cuttreedown2dj8.png
http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/9184/cuttreedown3kl2.png
The second tool I'm showing off today is: Small Raft.
This will allow you to "surf" in calm waters. Calm waters are the lighter colored water in the game- the one without an animation of movement.
Seas (the darker water) will not be able to be "surfed" in with the small raft.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/9395/surfing1hu7.pnghttp://img46.imageshack.us/img46/3438/surfing2zf2.png
Note: The officer is in this screenshot because of the already coded stealing feature- so thats why he is the only person on this map. Since that feature is fully coded.
Now what about the other tools.
Well I don't want to show them off just yet (because they are not fully coded- only the cut and surf are)- but you can guess each other HM will have a "Tool" lol.
So please leave some comments and feedback to let me know what you think.

Cool ^_^
I'm really liking the maps and of course the idea. It's adding more realistic-ness to the game :3

Great job Neo!

that looks great ND!
will you be able to upgrade your key items?
so like, you get a large axe so you can cut down bigger tress, or like large thickets?
i think that would be nice.
idk about the raft. is it inflatable? it should be.
i wouldnt wanna carry a raft around with me werever i go.
so ya, inflatable raft.
then an upgrade you could get it bigger, and a collapsable paddle?
ugh, im at a loss of ideas for this.
owell.
keep up the amazing work!

Cheers guys for the support.
Means alot. I'll answer some questions since I'm online.
@Atomic_Reactor:
I was thinking of having soemthing along the lines of that. Like better tools as you go along. Kinda like getting bigger and better fishing rods in the official games. But I don't know if I will. I might just stick with one set of tools.
@Eeveon:
Yeah, a tool for rock climb will be in the game yeah.
Again, it's only on my "Dev Sheet" and not coded into the game, so I don't want to talk about it just yet.
@Anyone concerned of storage for tools.
Guys, do you really care about "taking up space in a bag" ? Like come on, in the official games, do people mind when a kid carries around a bike in a pocket in his bag? Or mentioned above- fishing rods. An adventurer wouldn't talk around 24/7 with one of those.
Ya know, do tool sizes really matter?
It's not realism a pokemon game is after.
It's just a means to access a feature. And in this case to allow people to go around the land quicker with tools that are stored in the Tool box thing.
***
Anyways,
Believe it or not, I'm still coding in the displaying of attack names. I've got around 160 coded to display, while only around 40 are usable by the player right now.
I have a development stat tracking thread on my forum, so if you want more detail on how much stuff is actually in the game currently (like how many maps are mapped and so forth)- head on over (link in my sig.)
Also keep those questions coming. I have some more screenshots, but since the towns and routes have no people in them I don't know if I'll post them soon. Might re-take them. They aren't of anything important. Just random screenshots.
And again-
Anymore questions?

Wow nice. You got tools. Can i give ideas of tools for each tm? If i cant well then sorry. Here goes. Also you should do it in 3 stages so you can have more viarity to the game. And if space is a problem well the solution is like jimmy neutrons infinite space cube. It holds everytihng! Anyweh here i go with idea:
Small axe:
Cuts down 1 small tree
Medium axe:
Cuts down 1 middle size tree and 1 small tree at the same time
Large axe:
Cuts down any area of trees but only 4x4 areas.
Small raft:
Gives you acess to small ponds
Medium raft:
Gives you acess to small ponds and lakes
Large raft:
Gives you acess to all bodies of water
Now for tools unannounced i could give ideas if you want or not:
Well i was thinking. For whirlpool and waterfall you could add like features to the large raft. Like a small thruster for gettin across small whirlpools and so on. And for waterfall um mabye some kinda 3 leveled rocket boosters to get you up. For rock climb you could have the climbing pick and so on. Mabye even make paths for you to take on mountain sides with the strong climbing pick as a mini game and shortcut. Like instead of goin through the cave you climb the whole side and if you fail in the mini game you fall into whatever floor of the cave your on. I cant think of anything else sorry.

I do like the ideas and they sound similar to what I have planned already. So hope you like the future updates and announcements on the tools feature.
Right now though:
Small Update.
The battle system has had it's layout tweaked.
http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/5858/newbattlelayoutjj0.png
I felt I had to put in names of the Pokemon for the battle during battle. I had left them out before, so I just taught I'd add them in.
Better late then never huh?
Big thanks to Waudby (of the Pokecommunity) forums for giving me the name resources. I would of spent hours spriting them in paint.

This looks really great.
It is by far the best one I have seen of these yet.
The only part that confused me are the pokebits.
In the example, where you need 6 tablets to get to level 51, wouldnt it be hard to get that many? And do you get more bits the harder the pokemon that you face is?
I'd like to be a supporter for this game, because it is going to be great.
With the screenshots, I'd definetly bet you worked for Nintendo.

Okay, I wasn't going to post these screenshots because I just threw the window together.
But the tools are now fully put into the game. And usable.
So, as you can see in the screenshot- it lists 3 tools.
Clicking enter will bring up a small window and show the tools and an example of where to use them.
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/2475/tools11yi0.pnghttp://img296.imageshack.us/img296/9480/tools12gq8.png
Now, you may ask where is "FLY" and so on. There is actually no need for fly. As I have a "FLY" service that runs between towns. It is upstairs of every Pokemon Center in the game.
But you won't be able to use it right off the bat. And since it's a storyline event- and I aint ready to show off more storyline screenshots, you'll just have to wait lol.
Oh and time to answer any questions:
@Hypergaming: I might have some fakemon. I actually have been spriting some stuff in my spare time (when I should be working on the game :P)- but I don't know to be honest lol. We'll see I guess lol.
@Gak and various people about working for nintendo or gamefreak:
I would love to ha. I'm actually starting a computer game development course later on since that's what I want to do with my life. I genuinely want to be a game developer. So fingers crossed.
@§ώαmραrt: The Mineral bits and Mineral tablets are VITAL to this game. Since that's how your pokemon level up. I had an update before on it. Head on over to my forums to view the thread on it.
But I do plan the whole Mineral thing to be my next "BIG" update.
So just hang tight for that.

HUGE UPDATE:
Hey everyone.
Finally can post this update.
I waited a week until I could get it bug free.
Now it's ready to be showcased.
I present to you:
Mineral Usage Walkthrough
This is in fact, the 3rd part to the PokeCyber update.
The first 2, the storage and the phone, were revealed a lot earlier. The real reason behind the delay of this 3rd update of the PokeCyber was because this was crazy to code lol.
Working out attacks as the Pokemon leveled up was the hardest. But after jumping that hurdle, I flew through it.
So, this part is going to be image heavy.
It's around 11 screenshots, so sorry to slow internet users for this part.
***REMEMBER: This is on my test map with test wild battles- this map or wild Pokemon does not reflect the final game!***
Let's begin.
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/6181/mineralwalkthru1to4.pnghttp://img520.imageshack.us/img520/2861/mineralwalkthru2gq2.png
Start off by opening your bag from the main menu.
Use the 1 or 3 number keys to navigate between pockets.
Select the PokeCyber, which is the 2nd option.
Scroll down and select "Minerals Menu" in the PokeCyber's main menu.
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/5995/mineralwalkthru3fn4.pnghttp://img300.imageshack.us/img300/6586/mineralwalkthru4ie5.png
The Mineral menu is straight forward. It displays your Mineral bits (which you earn after battles)- and your Mineral Tablets (which you get from converting Mineral Bits).
I have no Mineral Tablets, so I can't level up my Pokemon. But I have A LOT of Mineral Bits. Select Convert Mineral Bits to do just that.
Remember what I said before, it's 100 Mineral Bits to equal 1 Mineral Tablet.
The PokeCyber will convert them for you. It will only convert 100 bits (so 1 tablet) at a time. So just re-select the option to make more.
As you can see in the second screenshot, I made 30 (which took away 3000 bits).
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2206/mineralwalkthru5vi4.pnghttp://img235.imageshack.us/img235/3352/mineralwalkthru6eb9.png
The menu for using Minerals is the same as the PokeCyber's storage. Provides a bit of consistency with the overall look of the game.
Since I'm only testing, I decided to just have a Bulbasaur.
I use one Mineral Tablet on him.
DESPITE WHAT I SAID IN AN EARLIER POST, IT IS NOW 1 MINERAL TABLET FOR EVERY LEVEL FOR EVERY POKEMON.
This is to make things easier for the player to just enjoy the game and feel strong in a short playthrough.
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/5607/mineralwalkthru7kk2.pnghttp://img214.imageshack.us/img214/1102/mineralwalkthru8go2.png
As mentioned above. The hardest part of the code was this in fact. As you would expect, as Pokemon level up, they learn new moves. The hard part was working out if they knew 4 attacks already and what they were. Then deleting an old move to make room for the new stuff.
Well it works just as you would expect.
Your Pokemon knows 4 moves and is trying to learn a new move. You can choose to learn the new move or not. If you choose to do learn it, you will be brought to this simple menu. Just select the attack you wish to forget, and "poof" :P, it's gone and your learned the new attack.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/8466/mineralwalkthru9kw1.pnghttp://img224.imageshack.us/img224/9963/mineralwalkthru10oj0.png
Again, as you would expect. Pokemon level up like normal. Well when I say normal, I mean, at the "normal" level and stats and attacks carry over to the new Pokemon.
After feeding my Ivysaur some more Mineral Tablets, I decided to get in a battle to test him out.
I won that battle lol!!
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/4792/mi
