ASM stands for Assembly.
It is a much more complicated programing language used for advanced GBA commands.
It is recommended you get yourself acquainted with ROM hacking before you even attempt ASM, as it is one of the most difficult methods out there.
(Well, it would be easier if SOME PEOPLE WOULD POST MORE TUTORIALS (You KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!))

Why would you want a 4th one?
Well, its for a hack im thinking of. mudkip in mystery dungeon has 4 frames: one standing, the 3 moving. I was wondering if i would insert another frame for it so that I could have all frames instead of cutting one out. Also, I want to change the dimensions from 16x32 to 17x32. Can this be done wihtout bumming up the frame?

Alright, I'm back with the same problem (well, a similar problem) to the one I had yesterday. The backsprites of all the Fakemon are still weird (Its a case of different palettes. Only really slightly different, but still different) which I think is what our problem is. So what I did was get the frontsprite with the correct palette, and paste the backsprite with the bad pal onto the top, which changed the colours really slightly. Nothing major at all. After that I re-inserted without changing anything. If you see a block around it, then it's probably because the background is the wrong color. The first color in a palette is transparent in the game, so that's the one you should use for the background.

I'm not sure I exactly understand :\ The Scrapbox is for posting hack ideas, and you don't have to have any media for that section at all. Perhaps thats what you were asking?

So imagine this scenario, if you will:
I'm in a double battle. I have a Dodrio and Marowak. It's turn three; Dodrio's about to die. Dodrio goes first and uses Rest. Next, Marowak uses Swagger on Dodrio to boost its attack for Sleep Talk. My question: The next time he attacks, is there a chance of Dodrio being injured due to Confusion even though he's asleep?
I'd test this myself, but I don't have Platinum yet.
Can I ask, what does this have to do with hacking?

You would have to set the position of the map so that he falls in the place you want him to.

It's better if you just cut one out, as having one more frame would require ASM hacking for sure. As for the dimensions, you can't use 17x32 or "weird" dimensions like that. Due to the way the images are loaded, you wouldn't be able to display them properly.

i kinda meant how do i get him to fall? can i use an indoor door tile? or does it have to be a hole tile? I think how it might work is if i make a new tile in tileset 1 using block editor that looks like the indoor door tile, but behaves like a hole. how do i use block editor to achieve these means? i can't seem to figure out how to add a tile graphic already existing in the rom. it just doesn't copy and paste for me...

Yes, to my knowledge. To use them w/o badges, you would have to create an item that could perform whatever task the HM performs. It's not too hard. If you want a script I can send you one.

i can't make warp points in emerald using advance map... i set everything correctly but when i go to said warp point, nothing happens. i also cant increase the size of the maps because when i go there, it takes me to a dark place with one single place where i can move that has grass. after using walk through walls cheat i discovered that the right side appears to have no limit and if i go twice up, it freezes. also, when i walk, the grass i was on/in disappears. when i make the warp point its to a new map i created. i set everything correctly (checked more than 5 times) but nothing happens

Hey, im having a problem with Overworld editor RE. I import my first sprite, and tick both boxes. then go to the next frame and import the picture with only "import image" ticked (because i do not need to tick the export pallette again). and the pallette is messed up! I reimport it to the same frame and this time tick "import pallette", and it looks fine. I go back to the first frame, and the pallette is messed up. help!

Actually, you would need to use ASM... If you want the item to have the script on it...
OR, you could place the script on a tile, and have it check to see if a pokemon you have has the attack it teaches...

If you THINK you are used to it, you aren't.
You have to be able to script over 5000 lines of script, and think that it is easy. Knowing the scripting language is not everything though. You also have to know your ROM... The RAM, the locations of things IN the ram...

(The Tutorial is called [Tut] Having Fun with ASM.)
If you can finish that tutorial, then talk to me, and I'll help you learn some new commands not covered in the tut.

Okay. I think I figured out the problem.
Goto Block Editor and find the elevator door tile, and make sure that the behavior type of the tile is set to use door or warp.

Hey, really simple question here, I was wondering if there was a tool around that changes the order of the whole National pokedex?
Sebbe's poke order editor only edits the first 150 of pokeon firered + leafgreen...
YAPE doesn't have it, and neither does poke editor pro... any other tools I've missed?
If there is a different way, like hex editing? I'd be happy to learn :D

Type in 'whack a hack' in the Google Toolbar. Click on the first link. When you get to the site, goto Tool. Click on Tools GBA, then find a program called Pokedex Order Editor.
Note: The site is in spanish.

Say I want to be a total noob and edit an existing script instead of make my own. There is an offset in the script that contains things I do not want to change. Do I still need to change the offset into a Free Space Offset? Why or why not?

If you want to make a new script, you use a Free Space Offset.
If you want to edit a script, then don't change the Offset.

If you want to edit a script, you want to add a dynamic offset at the top, and replace the main offsets with @something (example @start)
Then from then on you are able to change the script freely, and when you re-compile, it will find a new offset for it to insert automatically.
(If you do it the way you said, you may overwrite the script, or overwrite stuff you don't want to overwrite...)

I use XSE as well, and have been for a long time.
I am not talking about editing texts, I am talking about editing the script itself. The reason you don't have problems often is because you don't end up typing more text than was originally there. Also, have you ever tried adding new commands into the script, without deleting anything in the script? If you do, it will overwrite other data... (As will if you type text longer than the text that was there...
Is your XSE set up in "Refactoring Mode".
Mine is, which makes it so when you decompile a script, it makes it a dynamic script, instead of a static one...

0m3GA ARS3NAL is using XSE just like you. The fact that you rarely have problems doesn't mean you will never have any. And like 0m3GA ARS3NAL said, the Refactoring mode will help.

I'm still not convinced, but I think the only difference is how we write our scripts out.
@Om3ga: I've never seen how you set it on refracturing mode, but the I can decompile scripts just as well.

I know you can decompile scripts, anyone can.
The difference is, your decompiled scripts are in static mode, and mine are in dynamic refactoring mode.
You have to find a new offset to add new material, and I don't, since I have mine set up to do that for me.

For some reason, whenever I compile a script, and then access it in-game, the game just freezes. When I look back at my script, I see that it's all garbled up with stuff that I never put in. The title screen loses its Groudon (I'm obviously hacking Ruby), and sometimes the textboxes are gone.
I'm thinking the reason for this is that my dynamic offset is too small and doesn't contain enough space for new data, which is why the data overwrites the data for Groudon.
So, here is my question. How can you know how big to search for your offset? How do you know how big your offset needs to be?

Obviously you didn't understand how dynamic offsets work... anyway, the problems you're having depend on the fact you're editing decompiled, static scripts adding more stuff to them. And you can't do that.

Giving a squirtle is a simple "givepokemon" script. You should read Diegoisawesome's XSE tutorial and learn more about it.
Getting someone to follow you is much more difficult, and apparently it requires ASM hacking.

Here's a problem with my Advance Map:
When I was hacking Emerald yesterday(Just changeing names a bit)I went somewhere and everything was fine until I came back,and every area had lost it's Wild Pokemon data,and Eevee Fields(I'm making GreenEmerald,duh) was just black.
How did it happen?

yeah i tried to put a pokemon center rest sop on a bridge then it screwed up and put it on the water so the rest of the games fine but u need get surf toget your pokemon healed

Im absolutley sure they do, i went into irfanview and decreased them to 16 bit colour depth. im posotive that they are both the same pallette.
Oh i see. bits enter into it that arent in the other image. hwo do i import a pallette into it then? so that its the same pallette for every picture.
oh, nevermind -.- ill use different pokemon.

Why would you need to reduce the ROM size?
I forgot say that is about GBC roms. I need to reduce size becouse I want use it in MeBoy program. My mobile dosn't work with files >1MB (to small memory) so i think that if is posible to reduce rom about a few KB it will be work.
PS. Pokemon Red, Blue and others in gb work normal. I sure that is fault rom size. So can I count on someone?

I've encountered a new dilema, when I enter this route from the city, it will work perfectly, but when I try to enter the city from the route, it will freeze the game, does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this?

I bump this because of the new page and also Xatoku I think you're problem is in map connections=the city is connected to the route but the route is not connected to the city,you need to connect the route with the city and you're problem solved!

I'm working on a hack that inserts new trainers into the game. and thus i want to be able to choose what music plays during these battles. I would really like to know how to do this. not necessarily change the music (because sappy doesn't work with windows vista) but i would like to just choose what to play during the battle.

actually not because a-trainer changes only the trainer encuontner music(when a trainer sees you and this mark ! is on his head,and the talk before the start of the battle)

there's probably a special command for changing the battle theme,I just don't know that but I also want to know that command because I want to insert a battle themes for my hack about pokecry,I don't know....

If you want to edit Trainers, I know this programs called PET. It lets you edit everything about a Trainer Battle. And trust me, it's very easy. With it you can edit:
The Trainer Name
The Music that's played during the battle
The Trainer's Pokemon
The Trainer's Hold Items

If you want to edit Trainers, I know this programs called PET. It lets you edit everything about a Trainer Battle. And trust me, it's very easy. With it you can edit:
The Trainer Name
The Music that's played during the battle
The Trainer's Pokemon
The Trainer's Hold Items
Yes, and screw up trainers too. I released A-Trainer from a while, and even if it's a beta it works pretty good.

What in the name of Aipom are you talking about, screw up Trainers? PET does not screw up Trainers unless you do it yourself. There's pretty much no way that anyone can screw it up. PET is just as easy to use if not easier!!

PET screws my trainers when I first started hacking.

I'd have to agree. Although I haven't had it screw up any trainers, I've not worked with it in forever seeing as though my comp (and it's new virus scanner) recognizes it as having a trojan :/
A- Trainer is nice, has a clean GUI for a rom-hacking tool LOL, but the only reason I would use PET is to edit trainer titles, seeing as though A- trainer has not had that bug fixed yet.

If you want to edit Trainers, I know this programs called PET. It lets you edit everything about a Trainer Battle. And trust me, it's very easy. With it you can edit:
The Trainer Name
The Music that's played during the battle
The Trainer's Pokemon
The Trainer's Hold Items
Pet doesn't work with leaf green. and even then i thought it was only the music that plays during the encounter.

Er...
The pallate is used in a weather setting (I believe it's called "mist from top right corner or something along those lines), and I wish to do a 15 colour rotation of it, at a speed of two rotations per second. It's actually going to be used to imitate Golden Sun's Mind Read psynergy, which looks like this (I couldn't find a better video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gx5PZr5poU). The weather has an alpha (I'm not certain of the percentage but it looks like 50%) and thus, the colours would influence the tiles around it.
If you need me to insert an offset for the pallate you could always leave a buffer of sorts in the code for me to fill that in.
Is there anything else you need specified?

No, he means listen to the track, buy a music writing program with some good midi sounds and create the MIDI on your own. I use Sibileus, it's a great program, but the MIDI isn't as good as I'd hoped.

Converting a .wav file to a MIDI is hard enough. Converting a MP3 file is ever harder. Avoid such conversions anyway, as they're not worth the effort. You will experience enough problem to make your .mid file play the right way in the game. Just get the MIDI version of the song.

It's kinda crucial that you learn to find things yourself, sometimes. The table offset for FireRed US v1.0 is 0x48C914.

damn I gave to my friend to insert sprites,the sprites are awesome,but when he sent me the hack back the O\W sprites are now looking like this on a-map:

You're missing that file. It comes with MID2AGB, so don't ask it.

Maybe you overwrote the sprite's pallate...

Indexing (to my knowledge) means to assign a palette to the picture. In gba pokemon hacking the pallette will be either 16bit (meaning it has 16 colors) or 256bit (meaning it has 256). That is the clearest I can explain it.

To index the sprite, download irfanview. Then go to "image" and "decrease color depth" and make sure it is decreased to 16 colors.

1- I take my original rival sprite and convert it in 16-bit with Irfanview. I take the 16-bit sprite and paste it on the BLUE sprite. Results: Same problem as before.
2- I paste my original rival sprite on the BLUE sprite. I save and convert it in 16-bit with Irfanview. Results: Worse than before. All the colours are screwed up. None match and there is no transparency.

well I took a theme from emerald and put on fire red it seems like it has been changed but then I played the song on sappy,and instead of playing sappy has quited and I had to reopen it,is that OK or not?

Fact is you're pasting your sprite over another. Don't do that.

You just need to find the text. Any hex editor that support tables will do.

Are there bytes in the game that say what condition the OW is in (i.e. when a trainer locks movement with "!", walking in grass, surfing, just plain walking), and what offset are they located at? Are they stored in a variable, or does it just have to do with the particular script being run by the game?

You can use A-Text to change the trainer classes... can't really make new ones without repointing the table file... if there is one.

I'm sorry, but do you even know what a table file is?
All you should need to do is repoint the text to empty space and add the names after the new names of classes after that. But then there are some ramifications I guess, because most trainer editing tools are set to only show the default amount of trainer classes. For trainers you'll need to edit the class in your hex editor.
If you're using a Fire Red ROM, the classes are listed at &h23E558.
So depending on you patience onyx79, you may just want to edit the existing classes like Om3GA ARS3NAL suggested.

I know repointing is not too hard, but it is a pain in the butt sometimes, and can be kinda annoying if you miss a pointer or 2...
Like I said, editing with A-Text would probably be the safest route, so long as one does not accidentally type more characters than already exists...

Yes, use unLZ to edit the trainer animations. It should be halfway between the trainer frontsprites
EDIT @ ONYX: Sappy. I'm not sure, but I belive that is the program used for it.

What's the sprite point for ruby Advance map uses?
I was looking at pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=142067&highlight=overworld
On lesson 03 where the all the sprite pointers were located.
Anyone know where the pointers for ruby one is?
Don't say look at ini for OW editor cause doesn't say where the group of pointers are =-= only where the actual sprite are located are shown

It is somewhat of a bad idea to do so though, since PET makes errors every once in a while... you CAN do it, but you are better off using A-TEXT and / or A Hex Editor with a table file...

err well i forgot where i got the table file, but i can email it to you.
also, you need a hex editor that supports tables, i suggest transhexlation
also, it only translates the texts, not the scripts or images (duh)
so you can text edit with a hex editor

and you know you can search for words in A-Text.
also, the table i have only works for advance games, wont work on GSC or RBY.

Trainer Classes ARE located by A-Text thank you very much, that is how I change them for MY hack.
Just be smart about it and enter the text in ALL CAPS, since A-Text IS CASE SENSITIVE!

Technically, they are all usable by the game, although you don't have to use some if you do not want to.

You would use a Flashcart. Such as EZFlash or others. I have an old EZFlash and it works well. You'd also need to to download the software for it.

No no, I mean the NEXT A-Trainer, that will have the ability to change the Trainer Classes.
And you CAN change the in-battle music, with an ASM code.

There are tutorials for changing Pokedex Order in the Tutorials Section... you can change the descriptions of pokemon with A-Text, or better yet, YAPE!
(And Bulbasaur is the Seed Pokemon, not bulb... there is no bulb Pokemon, lol.)

Actually, that pretty much was my question. How does one create a battle in a ROM hack? I've dug deep, and can't find anything about scripting or other tools that affects things like the trainer sprite, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

YAPE is a pokemon editor.
It is an abbreviation for, Yet Another Pokemon Editor.

Use unLZ.gba to edit all images in the game from trainersprites to attack animations, and even the titlescreen lol. Look for it in the toolbox.

The PokéDex order doesn't matter as I bet you just didn't enable the National Dex.

All you need to do is to dump the B/W logo and load the proper palette. If you Google "load palette [program-name]" you should find what you need.

You don't need to open it, really. You just need to load it using a hex editor that uses table files.

I already know that they are signposts, but when I copy them 1-to-1 over to a different map, they don't work anymore (I am using the same tileset though)

Fact is you're pasting your sprite over another. Don't do that.
Err, then all I have to do is:
-I convert the sprite in 16-bit
-I insert the sprite in unLZ
-I'm done?
(My bad I wasn't here before for the reply)
EDIT: Method doesn't work. It HAS to be indexed, so I need to save the file on the RIVAL intro sprite...

If you check the ROM Hacking Discussions thread, tileset 16 is pretty much unused but the data needs to be moved to a free offset before you edit it. Otherwise the pokémarts will lose their block data.

Just copy the behaviour byte of the for the cave tile and put it on your tile...

I have a problem regarding a script i made myself. The script works fine. What it does: It prevents you to go to ROUTE 1 if you don't have a pokemon. That works. if you step on 1 of the script tiles, he'll walk to you and tell you a story and then you take a step back, and he walks back. However, the problem is, if i am close to that guy, and i open the start menu and open the pokemon menu, for example andd then get out of the pokemon menu, suddenly i'm the guy who's preventing me from walking to ROUTE 1. So i've become a different character X__X. How do i fix this?

Whenever I try to edit something it never saves.
EDIT: I think it must have had something to do with me using Platinum, when I used Diamond, it worked fine.

Well, that can be done, but it might corrupt the game. You see, some offsets are used in different things, like sprites, pictures, item descriptions, etc.
If you still wanna do that, then start from Offset 000001 and goto FFFFFF, deleting any scripts you find along the way.

How do you make patch file out a of pokemon diamond hack?
EDIT: I tried to make one using NUPS, and the patch file came out as about 65,119kb.
The original diamond I have is 65,636kb. And the modified one is 59,735kb.
Is that how it's supposed to be?

When I edit the text in diamond, I do the code for the player's name to come up ("\v0103\x0001\x0000") and it worked the first time, in the introduction bit.
When I use it again though, in the bedroom, it comes up with nothing, just the text I had after the code.
How can I fix this?

It's seem the file size is too big and you are un-clicking auto abort. Re-click it then repoint the offset.

Block Editor ---> Save tileset1 or 2/Load tileset 1 or 2. Tileset 1 is the main tileset and 2 is the secondary set.

There was a banner making program that made nice little banners with the special font it had, but you can make a banner easily in MS Paint or Photoshop...

You are going to have to find the Backgrounds in unLZgba, and replace them with those.
Be sure to make sure that you change the pallets of back grounds you want to match the regular ones, and make sure to resize it, and make your tileset...

how do i play the hacks? after i downloaded them of course.
patch the IPS to the rom that it is a hack of (usually says in the thread)
use LIPS or some similar patcher.

Unless you decide to play the AMAZING hack, Rijon Adventures, then you just need to use the Patching device that comes free when you download the patch... ONLY Rijon adventures Patch works with it's patcher, everything else so far, you need to use LIPS

How do I change the movements of a Pokemon on Emerald? Like when they go into battle?
If no method exists, then what are the scripts that define stuff like items and Pokemon?

you mean when they get out of the poke ball?well you need unlz for that....

Hi,
I'm starting with hacking now, and I'm strying some stuff with Ruby. I want to insert some new tiles,
namely the Pokemon Center of Diamond/Pearl. Those tiles have a different pallette than any of the
standard pallettes in Ruby, so I have to change it. The colors of the new pkmncenter tiles are already
made compatible with the advance map pallette editor (so in increments of 8). I then go the the pallette
editor, and change a pallette (10 for example), to the colors of the pokemon center (leaving the first color alone of course).
But then, when I save pallette changes, the whole ROM screws up. What to do now? Is there even a
pallette you can safely completely change in Ruby (like pallette 8 in Firered)? The only tut I've found
explaining tileset pallette editing is Austinia's one, but even when I exactly follow, it, it just messes up.
Is there some secret rule to get it working in Pokemon Ruby? Help will by very much appreciated.

Use XSE, really.
It is a liitle harder to get started with, but with a little tutorial readying and trying, you can get a lot more out of XSE than you will ever get out of Pokescript :)

I don't know how to use XSE (due to the stupid tutorials) and I thought it'll be easier with PokeScript, but.....
