How to change Pokémon sprites
(Beginner Tutorial)



Note that this is a repost of the old tutorial that was posted before the Documents forum wipe. A new and freshly updated version might be posted later.


Well looks like it's kind of a mystery how to change Pokémon sprites in the games...
Hopefully this tutorial will help you.

Please note that this is made for beginners.

Requirements: unLZ-GBA (comes with EliteMap), Imaging Program.

1) Well first off you need a base to draw your new Pokémon on.
For this you open unLZ-GBA, and keep clicking the "next" button untill you reach the Pokémon image you want to use as base.
Once you found the one you want, click on the "Save as" button and save your image in PNG format.

2) Now you have the base image. Edit it in any imaging program and draw your own Pokémon right over it. Save it as an indexed PNG image.
Note: You might need to adjust the palette, but I won't go into detail here since this is a beginners guide.
Okay, once you've finished that, you should have 2 images. The old one (as backup) and your new one. (I called mine "Boxie". =P)

3) Sweet! Now you go back to unLZ-GBA and (if you have closed it before) go back to the Pokémon you want to change.
Now you click the "Import" button and select your new Image.
Secondly, you click on the "Write to rom" button to save your new Pokémon.
When a message box pops up, just select the options you need, enter a new offset for the image that points to free space in the ROM and hit OK.

4) w00t! You're done.
Preview your new Pokémon in the game.

Congrats!
You've successfully changed the sprites and inserted a new Pokémon to your game.
If you want you can now customize the Abilities and Stats of your Pokémon.
This can be done by using program like BaseEDIT (comes with EliteMap), Pokémon-Amplifier, Dexter (comes with EliteMap) and N-E-A or by just using a Hex-Editor.
All tools can be found in the Toolbox, or on sites which are linked in the Tools Reference.

This tutorial is designed for newbies to the Rom-Hacking scene and that's why things are kept simple. I hope its helpful for you.

Are you still able to get the Pokemon you replaced after that?

... and thanks a bunch for putting this up. I haven't made any new Pokemon with it but it showed me what I was doing wrong when I was trying to replace Gary with the FR/LG girl. xD

I'm trying to replace May with a Team Aqua member.
But he ends up being Black in the game, yet in Unlz-GBA it is exactly how it looks in Paint.
Do you know how to fix that?

I'm trying to replace May with a Team Aqua member.
But he ends up being Black in the game, yet in Unlz-GBA it is exactly how it looks in Paint.

The Team Aqua sprite needs to be indexed. To replace it easier, export the Team Aqua member sprite and then import it and replace Mat's sprite. Choose "Export Palette" when you insert the sprite.

Choose a palette and then choose "Write to ROM" and choose "Export Palette" to keep the palette.

Nice tutorial... The only thing is, when I Import the image, it gets screwed up. o.O This is how I do it:

-Make whatever sprite
-Change the Color Depth to 16
-Import the Sprite

Is there something else you have to do? o.O (I don't know how to index, or what it is, and whatnot. Yes, I used the search feature. No luck.)

Indexing a sprite is changing the color depth to 16.
The sprite has to be the same size as the one you're replacing.
And when you write it to the ROM tick export palette too.

maby a suggest to put in where u can find the lg/fr can find thats on 669

edit:when i try to load me indexed.png picture it says error:image is not indexed

Thanks, I did all those things, and I'm quite sure that the Sapphire/Ruby is supposed to be 64x64... I'll re-check.

The picture frames in R/S/E/FR/LG are a bit tricky.
It's true that the overall picture has to be 64x64 pixel. However, each Pokémon has it's own set dimensions.
So, when redrawing from a base, make sure that the Pokémon fits in the exact same place dimensions as the original. (That means you draw a square around the base Pokémon's outer edges, and fit your new Pokémon in there.)

scizz do u maby know to how to do this withouth deleting the old pokemon? so just adding something and not deleting?

edit:i did try to replace 1 pokemon with the ?? but then it shows a sort of glitch pokemon

Scizz, everytime I try to put my own sprite in the game, I come into a battle, then the screen goes purple. Could someone help me?
Edit: Never mind, I fixed it.

You edited Oak's trainer sprite. The sprite in the intro is in unLZ but with dark colors. You have to insert your sprite over the one with the dark colors but it must be the same size and you mustn't export the palette.

Oh okay! I figured after a while that it wasn't the same sprite. Haha

I'm assuming it's the same with the choose your gender trainers.

ummm im trying to import a sprite but everytime i do it says "compresed size is 658 which is too big. aborting. how do i make it smaller so it can imported. respone asap

Hey can anyone help when I open the program unLZ-GBA and open my rom(pokemon ruby) it brings all the sprites up as a mess of colors. I don't know how to get it to display the pokemon sprite can someone help me.

Hey, I been trying to get a picture of Piplup to replace Bulbasaur on Unlz GBA. I saved the Bulbasaur picture, and I did not put the Piplup picture on the saved file of the Bulbasaur picture as it makes its colour go green.

I have a question lets say i have this sprite:http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmba/dpmba394.png
how do index it? lets say i want to replace it with MARSHTOMP so i open the MARSHTOMP sprite with paint i delete MARSHTOMP but i keep the background and give the same bacjground colour to the other guy. than i copy the other guy into MARSHTOMP 's sprite but than i get strange coulours. and usally its saying its to big
but with indexed sprites i doesent say so. so how do i index

when i export a image from unzl-gba I opened paint and deleted the pokemon(saved the background) and pasted a new pokemon(one from d/p) and the colours got screwed up(e.x. where purple was now is dark yellow or something like that),please help

u have to change the palette
there's different ways to do it though

Erm... when i put in a sprite, the palettes get messed up... palkia vanishes except for his pearl on his shoulder which is barely visible... it has happened with other sprites too...

Hey, I been trying to get a picture of Piplup to replace Bulbasaur on Unlz GBA. I saved the Bulbasaur picture, and I did not put the Piplup picture on the saved file of the Bulbasaur picture as it makes its colour go green.

Emerald has animations too so you have to find the animations (somewhere at 600) put the palette of the pokémon you want and export it. Then put the sprites on the image and insert it back.

arghhh! i don't know how to make a indexed png... i'm using paint..can anyone help :/

Use Irfan View to index your sprites.

how or with wich tool you can change the batle sprite of the trainers

The same way you edit the Pokémon sprites in this tutorial.

(I'm using a Fire Red rom)

I find the Pokemon image, replace it with an idexed image with the same dimensions, write the rom and point the offset to empty space. Nothing happens and I have the same Pokemon as before.

Why? What's going on?

well, i downloaded irfanview, but when i change color depth to 16 and save it, even then UnLZ says its not indexed.

EDIT- i trying to replace the 3rd gen starter pics wit the 4th gen starter pics.

You can tick "Automatically fix pointers" when you write the sprite to the ROM or not point the offset to emtpy space.

thanks for the sprites but I want to have a go at making my own ones. I don't get this indexed thingy?

Download IrfanView, open your sprite, Image > Decrease Color Depth > choose 16 colors and save it. The sprite will be indexed and ready for inserting in unLZ.

Well, I can import the sprite now, but the bottom part of it is all messed up with horizontal lines on it.

What settings should be used for Export Pallette/Image?

ok.. when I put my sprite into unLZ it's just this little black box!

Ok I think I fixed that problem..
but when I try to add the trainer sprite like the back part of her etc. it still doesn't show on the game.. It's still the same picture that it always was.

Unfortunaetly, my images are of the same size (for example, both the Blastoise sprite and my custome one are 59x53 where the sprite part is)

I said the image size, the whole image should be 64x64 pixels.

That's because the background isn't the purple colour, it's black. Open the image (try IrfanView) and edit the palette (replace the purple colour with the black that's for the background). The colours will be changed so you'll have to make the sprite like it was before. When you're done insert it and it will be okay.

To edit the palette, go to Image -> Palette -> Edit Palette.

Um, care to elaborate? What ROM are you using? If all of your sprites are messed up, you'd best be off starting over with a clean rom. And, what does 777 have to do with any of this?

umm yeah Christos I saw that before I used those on my unLZ and it looked all messed up probably cause of the size and probably a pallete so can you help wit dat?Plus can you give me a pokemon for me to use for these starters?

Try opening your ROM again and see if the pokémon's palettes are fine.
If they're still messed up then your ROM is probably corrupted, try another one.

To insert D/P sprites in GBA ROMs you have to make the sprite smaller and index it.
Then insert it and it should be fine.

I took the sprite of Treecko in PkMn Ruby and create a new pokemon form scratch. The back is the same color as the original (purple or green) and the outlines are black. Then I save the new sprite on the rom. But when I see it playing... The lines of the sprite are messed up... They are white and not black anymore

Maybe the color you used for the outline was the background one.

1. The backsprite should always be shiny, in the game it won't be.

2. The sprite has to have the same number of pixels as the Gary one.

I have a terrible time trying to insert Diamond/Pearl Sprites. All the ones I find are 80x80 does anyone know wheere I can find 64x64 Diamond/Pearl Sprites with or without the colored backround..?

I'm new here and am also trying to get d/p pokemon into my hack, i can't seem to figure out how to get the pictures to turn out like they should, i replaced one of the ?? pics with turtwig, but since i couldn't maKe aN indexed png i replaced a bulbasaur one i ripped and inserted it over the ??. Now i can't figure out how to remove those corrupted lines on the sprite. :(

if anyone has a link to already indexed d/p sprites i would love you...i tryed all the links here but they were dead...

please if someone could answer,i would appricate it alot

You have to save the pic you want to edit. Paste your pic in the pic. Color the backround as the original pic ones. Than import it.

Actually I don't know how to make indexed sprite. It means the Pics you import aren't "registered" in the game.

for ruby, the hoenn pokemon start at around 964, so bulbasaur should be around 462, but I have a question, I try changing the front sprite of the 3 starters, but it doesn't work but the back sprites work, but also, the front and back sprites work for their evolutions though.

Ok, I've read over ever reply, and I still can't do anything. i'm trying to Import Arceus as deoxys, But whenever I put it in it gets all orange and deoxys colored, then, when I put it ingame, it's all ugly and glitched up like that guy with the deoxys/skitty thing. The image is the same size so it should be working properly.

How do you index sprites in IrfanView ?

you open up your sprite, click on

image> decrease colour depth> 16 colours (make sure the dithering box thing is unchecked)

I have tried to import sprites like these into my game but they do not work. The front normal sprite appears fine in pokepic, but all the rest apart from the shiny back sprite are glitchy. However, when I come to test in the game, even the front normal sprite is glitchy!

well thats how you index a sprite anyway, that that it'l do much good...

in order for the picture to work you need to upload it to a server like imagecave.com .

it sounds like you are having the same problem as many of us are having. could someone out there who has done his sucessfully please help us?

D/P battle sprites are generally too large. I'd suggest to have someone to resize/resprite them so they fit.

when you say too large, do you mean dimension wise or colour wise? I've been experimenting with replacing the ruby sprite of mew with a pearl sprite of mew, and the dimensions fit just fine. I edited it in paint so it kept the same palet and made sure it was saved as an indexed png. It just turns up glitchy in the game, and the pallet of the back sprite gets all mucked up.

ideas?

How do you extend the image? I have a turtiwg sprite to replace treecko, but it says

'Error: Image is not extended!'

And yes, I am using UNLZ gba

:( But sadly, I don't know how to use a hex editor yet...

Well, I tried this to get a pokemon from a site for a ROM hack that I am making, but then the image comes up and it's glitchy. The bottom half is all glitchy while the top half is fine. Anyone know what the problem is?

umm i have a problem i'm replacing the ruby bulbasaur sprite into the dp bulbasaur sprite(im using paint)and how do we index the sprite with paint oh and the dp sprite was from wah,now when i replace the sprite and play the game there are weird lines at the bottom and the game freezez,after i replaced the bulbasaur sprite its back sprite became missing help

I followed the directions and saved image, put my new sprite over it, then imported sprite.

What Turtwig looked like in paint when I copy-pasted him onto te sprite I wanted to replace:

Do you mean the pal is messed up?(the pic was blurry)
If then in UNZL:
1)Goto import and select the turtwig,
2)Then press write to rom.
3)A window will open, saying sprite import options(or something like that.
4)Then also tick the import pallete option.

And your done!

I don't think anyone can understand this.. make your question clearer.

OK...

so i've been messing around with UNLZ and found that some sprites are easy to replace and some aren't. I'm able to replace squirtle and its' evos with piplup and its' evos with great success, but i'm having trouble replacing back sprites. they always turn out looking like this:

You know, to take a picture of the screen, you can jut press the "Print Screen SysRq"
button next to"F12".

And you have to erase the picture before you can paste it over.

You have to Paste it in paint then Crop(Resize the image) the image to the size you want. Check PM's now!

yuo must download the file "COMDLG32.OCX" and put it into the same directory!!!
find it on google!!..i'm sorry for my bad english!!!
