If I type "lol," I'm often just mildly amused. Same with "rofl" and the XD smilie. They've become my typical "that's kind of funny" terms.
If I'm actually laughing, you'll get an XD with multiple Ds. Or, if on MSN, it'll often be several lines of gibberish before my mind can formulate any sort of coherent response. 8D;

I can see that whenever I talk to you on MSN. XD
Anyway, yesh, I'm actually laughing when I use XDs..well only with multiple Ds, that is. XD

Well, first of all, I don't usually use "lol" unless I feel like being stupid. :)
I don't really have a specific smilie or anything that I use when I'm actually laughing. I sometimes use "XD" with multiple Ds, but other than that I just use "XD". Perhaps 75% of the time I'm actually laughing when I use it. Maybe. The rest of the time I'm only laughing in my head. :x But I never use "XD" if I don't find anything amusing.

I usually am, with the exception of the few times that I use it while being sarcastic. XD; But most of the time, it's not like I'm really bursting with laughter... just giggling in amusement or something like that.
(Although, my mom and brother never fail to ask "What's so funny?" when I do, so I try to keep it quiet. :x I don't like having to explain everything because they'll never understand my sense of humor.)

I usually dont write anything to say I'm laughing expect for 'haha'.
The only place where I write 'lol' is in Gunbound, when someone shoots so badly that really makes me laugh. (Yeah, I'm mean)

The lol is more filler, while the XD; means sort-of amusement, and if I do laugh at the super rare occasion from something online, then I think that I actually do type that (like *laughing IRL* or something.)
Multiples of either lol or XD means a greater form of that expression, such as very amused if I go XDDDDD; . Hm, I don't think I really use lololololol or another variants of multiple lol though.

I've only been using lol lately due to other people using it. Same thing with XD. Usually I ain't laughing, since as Lightning and Frostweaver said, they only represent some mild form of amusement.
If I'm actually laughing I will actually type "hehehe" or "hahaha"

I think I do the XDDDD thing for real laughing. I think. I never really notice. ._.;

Did you see that video on YouTube regarding this?
To answer your question though I don't think I'm ever really laughing but I might occasionally. It more or less just means it was amusing.

I rarely use lol... And when I do use it, I only use it in MSN. And I only sometimes actually 'laugh out loud' when I post that. Yeah. When I find something slightly amusing, I just use 'xD' which I believe I over-excessively use nowadays...

Nyu, lol is usually an expression of internal mirth for me, as my brother's computer is in the same room and he keeps telling me to shut up when I really lmao. The xD is something of a multi-purpose tool for me, generally to signify amusement or to make it clear that I'm not being fully serious (I've actually had some communication problems before I started doing that). Sometimes, I'm really laughing, but usually it's more like general amusement or a small chuckle. ^^

Lol was when I didn't know how to use capitals, now it's always XD.
But for me it's always true, Whenever I use XD I am always laughing, maybe I just find weird things funny, who knows, but I actually mean it..always. XD

"lol" is lame, I usually only use it when I'm trying to use a sarcastic tone, so people don't think mean what I actually say...
and I'm usually not laughing at all

The only people known to have actually make me laugh out loud when typing "LOL" are Chuchino, Bijou and YoshiRiRu. :x
Ironically, Bijou did it to me on MSN when she was making fun of Yoshi's name. xDD
Anyways.
I usually just type "LOL" (I type it as 'Lol') to show amusement or if I have nothing to say. Or the good o'l 'XD/xD' face.

considering how it's 98% easy to make me laugh on the net,I should've voted the first option,but I put the third....sometimes I laugh,sometimes I put it to point out that it was funny,and sometimes I put it just to be polite....XD....<.<....and I put that too...XD...<.<.... okay,I stop NOW...

Shortening a phrase when typing makes me feel rather lazy. If I do ever find something funny on the Internet or if I'm being my usual sarcastic self, then I use the classic "XD" face. "LOL" is rarely used by me when I want to mock someone. And if I feel really special/odd, then I use "ell oh ell".

February 28th, 2007, 09:56 PM
I never use "lol." Ever. But I do use smilies to express my varying levels of amusement. "XD" is used for when I'm smiling in real life. And when I "XD" at the end of one of my own messages, it means I'm smiling while I'm typing it. To express actual laughter, I usually use either "XD!" or "lmao". So whenever I use those, I'm literally laughing my ass off.

I don't use lol or XD, i use =). But it's only usually to be polite. It's not that I'm that cold or anything just that i usually use it to make newcomers feel welcome. And then there is the occasional chuckle when i pm my friends...i used to use lmao and rofl when i used to play a lame game which i shall not mention...

Its sorta strange, i only use 'lol', 'rofl' or 'lmao' when i'm playing WoW but i always use XD =) and =P when on PC, and yes i'm at least smiling when i use them.

I use the term "lol" for when somethings amuses me. Depending on how funny I think something is i'll use the follow emotes or words to express it (from left to right is from least funny to most funny)
heh --> lol --> hehe ---> rofl ---> roflmao
Anything with ! at the end is 2x humor multiplier, and capitals are a x3 multiplier.
I only ever used "xD" once because I didn't know its meaning...

Sometimes I chuckle or laugh.

(Dinosaur who let's a fat plumber ride his back. :xxx)
I remember you had like, "LOL and ROFL and xDDD's" For like, two pages. xDD
Whenever I'm laughing REALLY REALLY hard, then I'll put 'LAFF!!' but that only happens whenever I'm like, about to wet my pants from laughing. (That Kingdom Hearts gone Sims thing made me Laff.)
But when I'm laughing, or amused or whatever, I'll just put "xD" Or variations. It gets the point across, and since I'm one of those people who are against the usage of 'L-O-L', I try not to use 'Lol'. Besides. xD, is one character shorter the lol. And it's less moving of my ring finger which always ends up hurting like crap by the end of the day. :x

When I type LOL, I never laugh, though it's used to show I'm in a good mood, and smile about it. If I were to burst out laughing, I wouldn't write LOL, but rather ROTFLOL or LMAO or ROFL. lol

I use "lol" when I'm talking to my irl friends, because they don't know the meaning of "XD" When I'm talking to people from online, I'll use XD to express mild amusement, like basically everyone else here did~ =P I use "rofl" to express me laughing.

I don't even apply it here, just on MSN whenever I feel like acting "odd". And whenever I do use it, chances are I'm not actually laughing. I guess it's something that I type out at random.

I don't use 'LOL' much, or any other short term for the matter (AFK, BRB, etc.). I prefer typing out everything. Um, I usually just use 'XD' in place of 'LOL'. However, I might just use it in spite of myself when I'm being sarcastic or just don't think 'XD' can describe how funny I find the matter. XD;

I still use both lol and XD, but mainly because... hm...

._.
I guess it's nice to have an up-beat post. lol (and I didn't actually "lol") I most likely do that because if I was having a conversation irl, I would probably chuckle or something after I said something like that. >_>;

I hardly ever laugh OUT LOUD, but I do smile or laugh a little bit under my breath. Sometimes I use it sarcastically, but I'm not the most sarcastic person. Aaaand... sometimes I'll use it at the beginning or the end of a sentance so you can tell I'm not 100% serious.
If I think something is hilarious, I'll go 'ELL OH ELL', basically cuz I use XD so frequently, it seems to be a little bit inneffective.
I'll also go 'XDDDDDDDDDDDD' (sometimes even more 'D's) when I think somethings really funny! So yeah.

Now here is something of the chatspeak I most hate. I hate that "lol" thingy. Well, sometimes I use it when I want to say "You are stupid", "You are pitiful", "You surprised me" and things like that. And I hate people to tell me "lol". Everytime I get a lol, I send "..."
For laughing, I use the "xD", but only with massive D's when it really amused me.
I think "lol" is a really stupid thing. It should be censored in all entire world.

Most of the time I do laugh out loud. If I don't, I was laughing in my head at least and would laugh but just didn't.
Normally, I follow this system:
lol = out-loud chuckle IRL

xD! = uncontrollable laughter IRL

It depends, really. If someone says something and I go "LOLOLOL" it means I've cracked a smile. I've never gone as far as actually laugh out loud when typing it though. I'll usually go "*dying here* XD" or something to that effect when I am actually laughing.
