View Full Version : March Map Making Contest

Neo-Dragon PMed me a suggestion for the area, as this idea has been brought to mind before, we're gonna try and give it a go just to see how it turns out. So, here we have PC's first Map Making Contest. Being the first contest, I'm a little unsure as to how many participants we are going to have, so this contest is going to just be a general, un-themed contest. Should this work out and prove quite popular, monthly editions will be run with more specified themes. If not, well, we'll have to try something else to get people interested. Anyway, onto the rules:

-Rules-

Produce a map, in any game making program, using any tileset you want.
You may enter a maximum of two different maps.
There is only one restriction on the type of map you may submit. Indoor maps/gyms etc are prohibited. Anything else is fine; towns, routes, forests, caves are all fine.
Maps must be your own work, no plagiarism.

-Awards-

Bragging rights. The winning map will be displayed in the first post for all to see.
Should this prove successful and worthy of doing once a month, a "Contest Hall of Fame" will be created, listing the winners and their entries for all to see and for the winners to boast about.

You have until Sunday 18th March to submit all entries. After that, entries will be closed and voting will commence. Voting will last a week, until Sunday 25th March, with the winner and runners up being announced that day. Voting will be done via an anonymous poll in this thread.

And that's all I have to say now. The contest is open, lets see if we can get this to be a success. The area could use some better forms of active participation.

Either post your entries here or PM them to me, I'll then add them into the first post so they're all in the same place. Discussion is allowed here too, just keep it on topic.

It is a good idea, but I disagree on the fact that the voting will be anonymous as this will in the end be ineffective.
It is easy for a participant to get his/her friends to vote for their entry thus defeating the purpose of choosing the best map.

I'd rather know who voted what and the reason why they did so (a valid reason, not just "because it's cool")

I have to agree with Avatar here. How about instead of using the standard poll, have users PM one of you with their votes. Don't allow votes from accounts under 10 days old either, it is all to easy to make accounts to just vote.

Well, here is my entry. Please don't whine about it being an RTP map.

Also, this is a map of my game called Tales of Virtue. This is Riverdale.

My guess would be no, but that is just a guess. I would like to see what you come up with, though.

Well he did say that the only restriction on what kind of map you can make is that it can't be inside.. I'll have a go anyway.

Game makers != Map makers

My map isn't all that complicated or anything but I can almost guarantee it'll be like noone elses map.('cuz noone else likes to make tilesets o.O )

Anyway I think I know who i'm votin for but since he said anomynous i prolly shudn't say who huh?

Hmm, you do have a point. Although, I don't expect that many entrants for cheating to really be an issue. surely nobody is that sad. But, I shall change that rule just to avoid any problems.

Can I use Hammer? (Map maker for Half Life 2) cause I'm starting to learn it and shiz.
I'd prefer you not to, since modding a PC game is a lot different to mapping in an RPG engine, so it's best to keep things fair and even.

So Dawson, When the voting starts we PM u with our vote and reason?
Nah, you'll be making your votes in the thread, with your reasoning as to why you voted for the map.
Are we allowed to make comments about posted maps?

=x
Sure, I don't see why not. As long as it's constructive, comments are always useful.

One further thing, guys. It'd be great if you could give your maps a name, making it easier to order and for people to decide which to vote for, especially if the same person enters more than one map.

Comment for Ruyin: The part where the bridge thing crosses that railroad track and the stairs to get to it and the surrounding few tiles look a little awkward, Like the tiles aren't meant to go together.

~Azura
March 4th, 2007, 05:46 AM
Yup, that's a common error: misuse of the tileset. That bridge was made for being over water, and shouldn't be used elsewhere.
Another thing too: the red sign was meant to be a red sign, not some kind of door lol

The last thing, more concerning the tileset you're using: the flowers and the sand should blend with the grass, however, I can see a light green square.

Oh, one more last thing... (sorry)

there are 5 tiles for grass in Pokemon, but you're using just one, making the floor look too repetitive, you know?

That's about it, I guess...

Okay, well I've threw together two maps. Both have been quickly mapped so don't expect anything great. The first is a route/town map pokemon tileset, nothing fancy. The second is a random map thrown together with zelda minish cap tileset I just made. The tileset is far from complete or correct, this gave me the opportunity to test what I had so far out. I was going to post them near the close date but I can't be bothered waiting around and I haven't got the time to do anything proper anymore, so here they are.

I'll put them both in a link because the pokemon is rather.. uh.. big. *sigh*
Pokemon Route/Town (http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/rm2k3kid/Map_Cont_Rev1.png)
Zelda Map (http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/rm2k3kid/Zelda_test.png)

Enjoy.

@Glitchfinder: Great Map! I do see a 4 errors, though. One stump is hovering over water and a tree is missing part of the base. Two trees are also missing lower branches. You are very talented! I especially love the waterfalls. 9.75/10 (The only thing that doesn't make it a perfect 10 is because it doesn't really seem that usable. Too many trees block movement, and there is no way to get across the water)
No offense, but I seriously doubt you made that in 20 minutes.

@Ruyin: Map is okay. I see many flaws in the bases of the trees. I see you also have not fixed the flower error (The white path and the light green path have the same problem). The train station building is a nice touch. The ash-covered trees seem out of place, along with the bridge. 7/10

@RM2k3Kid: I love the Minish map! I noticed no errors. It is mapped perfectly to the style. 10/10.
You Pokémon map is excellent, too, but it seeams a little big. The beach seems to be a little square, but other than that, it looks great! Very balanced and detailed. 9.5/10

I didn't intend it to be usable. I intended it to be pretty. I'll update it later today. (I noticed the errors myself, I just didn't fix them) And, I just checked back on my computer log, and realized how much time flies when you are having fun. I won't disclose how long it took though. (I just noticed, I can only find one tree missing lower branches. I also just corrcted several errors regarding layers)

*Edit*

I just found the other error. Thanks for the comments!

Yeah I don't like the beach either.. haven't had much spare time lately. The size really isn't a 'map contest' size is it.. but it's about how big I wanted the route and town I guess, I think I'm stuck in game mode :S.

Yes that is very nice, even if a bit square and blurry in some parts.

Ruyin
March 9th, 2007, 01:36 AM
Yea, that blur is unavoidable when you're zoomed out.

Alistair
March 9th, 2007, 07:45 AM
Well, I wouldn't call it great. There are many problems with it.

-- 1.)It is way too symmetrical. The builings could be arranged a little better by not having them perfectly symmetrical.

-- 2.)The buildings don't look right. The PC, Mart, and Gym are blurry, and the lightest color on the roofs of the houses is too bright.
You should also say you customized the buildings, not made them. Making a building is making it completely from scratch.

-- 3.) There are many tree errors. Look behind the PC and Mart. The FR/LG and Silon trees should not be mixed. Also, look at the lower right tree near the fountain. It is covering a piece of patch.

-- 4.) The lake doesn't seem right. Mak it smaller and get rid of the fence. Use rocks instead.

-- 5.) There are way too many flowers. Get rid of about half of them.

Other than that, it looks better than your other maps. 7.5/10.

Ruyin
March 9th, 2007, 02:25 PM
Thanks for the feedback Don Patch.
I was trying to make the map symmetrical, it is a futuristic city, things are meant to look artificial.

As I said, blurring while zoomed out is unavoidable. I also changed my post to say customized.

You always say many tree errors, I can't see any. EDIT: Oh crap, the tree next to the hospital doesn't match...

Uh, the lake as are the flowers are space fillers. Trust me the map looks PLAIN without them.

Graagh! Can't stop making maps.... Must... replace... train... station...

Alistair
March 10th, 2007, 02:58 PM
@Ruyin: If you are going to keep it symmetrical, then could probably move the houses so they are right next to each other. And about the blurriness, that is not that hard to fix. Just choose a couple of colors from each parts of the building, and recolor those parts with those colors. And about the space fillers, and easy solution is making the map smaller.

Crazy Weavile
March 10th, 2007, 03:04 PM
Another thing is that you added too many different tiles (Such as different buidlings).

Your rating really reflects my opinion of it, but the quoted reason is beacuse it's supposed to be the world's largest city.
