We've got the worst titles...

The name fits nicely. Out with Hikari, in with Dawn.

Dawn.. *dies* That's a little let down after I was building up Hikari and all. Oh well, they could have made it worse, I just hope they get a good voice for her.

I like it... And the new episode titles aren't any better or worse than the last season. Bad puns galore!

Um, A) if we're focusing Hikari, that really belongs in the Pokemon General section and B) we have a upcoming Dub Episode Title thread. I was going to post it and you beat me to it. So, for now, I'm debating what to do with this. It will be open, just don't know what to do it.

Still, I hate the final title. Headdesk.

I like Hikari better then Dawn.

Well, since it was a general anime info, and episode titles, I figured it'd fit in best with the TV shows forums <.<

Dawn is good, but Paul? Not good for a bad guy.At least the eppi titles are better, except 'Getting Twiggy with it' it sounds too unnapropied.

I was so let down when I seen her name was Dawn but I'll get used to it but Shinji's name Paul....... Just doesn't fit his attitude.

Drew
March 19th, 2007, 05:52 PM
It could be worse actually.
Dawn is kinda pretty, in my opinion.

It sure is better then Solidad, or whatever Soari's dub name was... x__x

March 19th, 2007, 06:21 PM
I agree with Drew. Dawn is actually pretty cool. I may be wrong but doesn't the name Hikari mean 'light'? Then Dawn makes perfect sense. I think it flows with her pretty well.

Paul on the other hand could've been a bit better. Shinji actually could've worked IMO, but I tend to not harp on names because eventually I get used to them anyway.

Dawn sounds like a guys name.I think thats pretty weird.

Drew
March 19th, 2007, 07:19 PM
It'll sound like 'Don' when they say it... which is my grandpa's name.. D:
Hikari shall forever remind me of my grandpa when I watch the dub. xD

Gary, the Magic Fairy
March 19th, 2007, 08:15 PM
I like it. Dawn is a pretty name. I'm just really happy they didn't do some totally weird name, like what they did with Saori... so sad. xD

Eh, Paul's an ok name, I guess. No worse than 'Ash', imo. xD

Ayano Katagiri
March 19th, 2007, 08:45 PM
Dawn? I suppose it could have been worse. But I dont really think it'll fit in well.

I prefer Hikari, it would have good if the dub name was just Kari. xD that's just IMO~

Even I like the word "dawn" (I use that as mystery dungeon team name) I just don't think it's suitable for a girl name....

It just because i know the japanese name earlier or the 4rd gen related englsih name are worse than japanese in general?

Idiot!
March 20th, 2007, 12:37 AM
Hikari means light. And Dawn? Somehow suits the Japanese name. But not a good name

I saw this coming..

Have you guys noticed that NOA/Gamefreak/Pokemon have been getting sloppy with names? I mean bad names? They are coming up with really lame episode titles now..
It's gonna attract more younger people then teens. Not that it's aimed for teens or younger people.

Hiroshi Sotomura

Dawn? NoA's name. Besides, nothing wrong with "May" now, is there? I'm very interested in how the latest bunch of names are slightly close to their Japanese counterparts - Haruka, or specifically, "Haru", means Spring. And isn't May a season in Spring (in the Northern Hemisphere, perhaps)? And at the dawn, what does the sun bring at dawn? Light (Hikari).

As for Dawn being a name, it's actually quite nice. It's not one of the less-possible names (compare with Misty). Plus, an Australian ex-swimmer bears such a name, and with my background in Australia, I'm sure I'd know what a name could be and whatnot. Dawn fits as from what I said above, I daresay.

As for Paul, you can blame the dubbers for that horrid name. And also something to criticise the dubbers for are the horrible, horrible episode titles.

John, the character names like Dawn and Paul are usually anime-specific, so the topic is still suitable to this anime forum.

I know, but it's more the "I got beaten to it to post". Of course, I just found out and was about to, but someone beat me to it. Ah, well. On the plus side, that forever summed things up.

Moving on, I have a Paul joke from MST3K, but my brain has gone away. I'll repost it later as the thread is getting major traction.

I'm really pissed off that they named Shinji Paul because he doesn't look like one, nor does the name suit him. It's sooo plain and boring.
... but now that I think about it, isn't that super popular Beatle member named Paul too?
Should I be disgusted or honored?

Hikari, I dont really like Dawn for her because whenever I read Dawn, I read the Dawn from the Baby-Sitters Club. I wonder what Jedi Amara will think of this since I see her on the BSC livejournal community a lot.
So until Hikari dies her hair blond and wears casual 80s clothes, she's Hikari for me and not Dawn.
Hikari's not Dawn. Dawn's not Hikari. If anything, I think Misty would be more suited for the name Dawn than Hikari because Misty is pretty similar to this girl.

Drew
March 20th, 2007, 04:51 PM
D: I agree, Shinji doesn't look like a Paul.. at all.
I like Hikari being called Dawn, better then I like Shinji being called Paul...
and I muchly dislike the whole 'Dawn' thing.

But, like I said, Dawn could be worse...
Not too sure that 'Paul' could be though.

I like the name Dawn. It sounds really pretty just like her. I kinda saw that name coming since I heard that Hikari means light in Japanese and I heard about the M thing with Misty and May but how they like to translate the girl's name to something that is similar to what their meaning is. Like I heard Misty's Japanese name means something like mist and like May's Japanese name means spring so when I heard Hikari's name meaning light the idea of dawn came to me for a little bit. It was kinda hard to think of a name that means light and starts with an M.

Paul? Okies. Can somebody explains where that name came from? It makes no sense to me. Still it kinda like Ash's name because I never got where they got him first name from.

The names are okies. I mean they are not the best but to me they are much better the the 4Kids dub names which always were horrible puns on pokemon names. I like it better that they are making puns of the character names. My fave of the five are the last two. The last one makes me laugh when I say it a loud. Teeheehee. Twiggy.

And correcting myself, Haru means Autumn. May is a month in Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

What is up with the name Paul.. it really does not fit Shinji's appearance or attitude IMO.

Haru means Spring... you had it right the first time.

There is something that Dogasu said on his site this morning.

Now I understand that these are main characters and that people have wanted to know their names for a while now, but this isn't exactly front page news, people. There's an eight page thread on Bulbagarden and an eleven page thread on Serebii...doesn't that seem a bit excessive? Is the drought for new things to talk about THAT severe?

I know this will sound ridiculous coming from a 24-year old webmaster of a Pokemon fansite, but...get a life, people.

Considering we have 25+ posts so far, I rather agree. Heh. But I kid of course (mostly). Either way, April 22nd won't come too soon for me.

I don't if it is true that "haru" means "spring". What I do know is that "Haruka" means "far away". Source:
http://www.cojak.org/index.php?function=kJapaneseKun_lookup&term=haruka
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haruka
http://www.freedict.com/onldict/jap.html (under "Japanese to English Dictionary" fill in "Haruka" press "Search"

To be more on topic, Dawn is okay I guess. It's not terrible. As for Paul... with all the weird names like Solidad, Saridaki or Galea you would think PUSA would give Shinji a less "normal" name.

March 22nd, 2007, 12:55 PM
Well the names could be better but then again it could be worse, but hey to me the names don't really matter too much, I mean it's just a way to identify someone, I mean their names aren't going to change who they are or what they look like they'll still have the same personalities and such I think it was said best in Romeo and Juliet:
"What ’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

same can be said about characters too.

Haowakeorden
March 22nd, 2007, 01:04 PM
Now, I'm observing that many people do not like the name "Paul" for Shinji. I think the name fits well; to me, "Paul" gives me an impression of mysteriousness, deceit, traitorousness, corruption, and treachery. Not too off from what Paul's actual personality is, I think.

I also assume that you don't know that much about Canadian politics to see why I think the name "Paul" conveys the messages that I believe it conveys...

The fact that Ash has only travelled with two female characters kinda doesnt really create a pattern.

I like the name Dawn, I haven't really seen any episodes with her except for the first two eps, but it seems to fit her.

As for Paul...I'm not really feeling it, but who knows maybe when I hear them call him that in the dub, I'll get a liking to it.

April 10th, 2007, 08:23 PM
Dawn's...not really that bad of a name/translation, really. I mean, I will always prefer the Japanese names to the English ones, but if they're trying to maintain the whole "light" theme in the dub then it's probably the best they could really come up with. Mmm. They could've gone with something else, I guess, but there would just be complaints about that. XP. I don't think it's possible to satisfy the sub-watchers as a whole with one name.

I really like her name. It has a nice ring to it. At least they went by how her name is in Japanese and the meaning and then thought about Dawn. Great Thinking.

Paul...hm...that will take time to get used to, but it isn't bad.

And the Dub Titles for the first few episodes are pretty cool. I can't wait.

I'm getting more use to the whole 'Dawn' thing... but 'Paul' is something I doubt I'll ever get use to.

Both Shuu and Shinji are 'rivals' in the series, and whats amusing to me is that I have two close friends named 'Drew' and 'Paul' (now all I need is a Gary.)... so whenever I watch DP I'll probably think of my friend. >>; That should make it interesting..

And yes, 3 more days! x3
