What did I miss during the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald era?

I was a huge Pokemon fan during the Red/Blue/Yellow era from about 1998 to 1999 or 2000. Then I got back into it in late 2000 during the Gold/Silver/Crystal era and was into it until about August 2001. Then I went on a six year hiatus and I'm back into now in 2007 for the Pearl/Diamond era.

My question is, what all did I miss during the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald era? Anything particularly big?

you missed the introduction of double battles, more berries and I'll name some later if I can think of any

u missed some new and strong pomemons, alot of which cand learn dark and dragon moves. for example sceptile (grass type starter) if breed can learn crunch and dragon breath. I like u am a old school fan of red/blue/gold/silver but i skiped on ruby/saphire. bought them a few months back and planning to buy diamond/pearl in about 2 weeks when i have money, then i training for a couple months and am coming after some people in friendly competion of course. stay cool people.
