Welcome to Pokémon in the 3rd Dimension!
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DJB_MASTER/pkmn3dlogo4.png
(sry for double posting - apparently this should be in this forum)
Hi guys i'm here to tell you about my new WIP game - Pokémon3D.
Pokémon3D is a brand new game for PC built entirely in a 3D environment. Myself and the Pokémon3D team are adding new storylines, new characters and loads of new features.
Explore different towns and cities on your journey to becoming a pokémon master! Features include...
>> Full 3D real-time battles!
>> Pokémon can now learn 6 moves!
>> New attacks and new items!
>> Online multiplayer battling/trading with a dedicated
pokémon3D server (Still to be announced)!
>> Built-in trading cards and other bonuses!
Here is a screeny>>(dnt worry! Not final! Re-modelling and Re-texturing in progress.)
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DJB_MASTER/pokemonbattle.png
We are still currently working on V3 of Pokémon3D and hopefully will have a demo out by September. Here is a sneak-peek of the story/map. I dont want to give it all away because it is still being modifyed and i dont want to reveal any secrets.
Sundale Village - Home town
Here lives prof chesnut, the player and the players rival. There is an ancient ruins nearby up the top of the hill with an ancient shrine. There is a wall where it speaks about raising the ultimate pokemon. A round hole is cut in the wall.
Routes 1 - 5
Here you will meet a couple of trainers and quite a few grass pokémon. There is a day-care centre here where you can take your pokémon. This leads to Rosebush Town.
Rosebush Town
Basic town (not very big). Has a pokecentre and a pokemart. No Gym. A couple of resident houses. Surrounded by water on 1 side. A great spot for fishing - if you have a rod that is, LOL!
Routes 6 - 11
Leads to thistle Garden.
Thistle Garden
A grass and bug pokemon inhabited area where pokemon come to pollinate and mate. Here are lots of berry's and acorns. There is a giant maze which reveals a secret in the middle.
We plan to feature 20-25 pokemon in the Sep Demo. We are using C/C++ and the battle system will be fully functional. I think allowing pokemon to learn 6 moves is better than previous games. We are still working on devloping new items and attacks. Also new HMs and TMs and currently being developed. Also the engine we are using can handle anything up to 200,000 polys per scene and works very well even on out-dated hardware and systems, so hopefully no lag.
I will post more screenies later but if u have any ideas you want to submit then reply here or visit the pokémon3D Forums...

ok thanks for the advice. I dont see why though, that "No linking" rule sucks in my opinion. Its not like i'm stealing ppl away from the forums or anything - i've just got more stuff on the Pokémon3D forum.

This looks cool! I'm hoping my graphic card supports it! I've wanted a 3D Classic Pokemon adventure for a long time. BTW, I'm running ATI Radeon. Is that good enough?

Should be plenty - the engine we use works great even in old hardware. One of the test rigs is a intel Pentium 4 with on-board 64MB graphics.

If I can help... I have a set of textures that you can use... its from the 3D Gamemaker I have yet to install, with some good textures for human characters. If I can, I'll try to copy it, but first I'll have to check with the 3DGM lisence, to see if I can even use the models freely. If I can, I could send some to you.
Just ask and I'll help :P (If I can, though)

Just a quick question. Is the game being developed from scratch or are you guys using some 3D game development program? Because it'd be awesome if you were just programming it from complete scratch!
I can't wait for this game to be released!

In terms of creating stuff from scratch...
We are creating all media (models, music, gfx) ourself.
The 3D engine we are using is simple just a 3D renderer but we have to write all the code from scratch, yes.
In terms of storyline its not going to be like the classical Gameboy games. It will be quite unpredictable with a couple of suprises that havent been seen before. Like i said before we are still refining the storyline.

Cool! Well, are you going to make random weather that affects the battle too? I mean, in Colosseum/XD, there is a scene every turn. It's not quite natural. I mean, it says "The sunlight is strong." Why not make it so it shows all the time? I mean, it starts raining in an area, and areas have different weather rates. For example, in a forest city it rains and the sun shines a lot, but it rains more. And when you are battling outside, in the rain or hot sun, instead of just showing a short scene and saying "The rain continues to fall," it shows the sun shining all the time (Not so much that you can't see the field), or raining/drizzling all the time, as a special effect. So you know it's raining and it won't waste time.
EDIT: I joined your forums. I'll try to tell my friends!

Well a weather system was planned from the beginning and it will definetly affect the way pokemon battle aslo when pokemon are caught, such as water pokemon are found more frequently and fight better on a rainy day/night. Butm we are still refining it, like evrything - we want to get most oof it right first time. Any ther suggestions most them at the forum. Thanks, David.

Hey guys something i kinda forgot to ask. I asked on a programming forum if some people wouldnt mind helping with the programming. I told them it was a pokemon themed game in 3D. This is what i recieved...
"Creating a game based on copyrighted material is copyright infringement and at least in the US, illegal. It doesn't matter if the game is created for free, given away for free, or whatever... it is still considered infringement and at best you can be shut down and at worst, sued."
I thought you were allowed to create fan games if you did not profit of them. No-one in the team is profiting off pokemon and we are creating most of the resources and media ourselves.
What do you think? Is making Pokémon3D illegal?

No. You havn't steal material of any company and so if you craete all by yourself it isn't illegal. Where did you get this message?

Nintendo said fan games are okay as long as you don't sell them or claim the sprites/music, etc. But if you are doing everything yourselves, the only problem would be if you sold it. So I guess your project is okay.

Nintendo has given permission to create fangames, but be aware that they can revoke it at any time. You are, after all, using Nintendo's Pokemon designs, battle system, game mechanics, etc for the most part. Those things can be copyrighted.

Basically, what that rule states is, You can write however way you want as long as it has a clear message with some kind of relevance. The message was obviously clear to you because you replied.
Oh, and a little advice, try not to present evidence that works against you. It makes you look dumb :)

Anyway for screenies and so - We dont have many to show you. Here are a couple...

3D games make me think, is this OGL or Direct3D? And if your 3D engine is only a renderer, it'd be better create one yourself, it doesn't even take time, I have one made already (and it isn't only a renderer)
Anyways, this isn't going to be less than atleast 400MB which I guess, I won't spend for a game like this. I don't think the idea is too great for a game, play some GTA or stuff, I'll prefer those games to this, and obviously there is no reason except that you havn't said that there is anything special in this except that it is 3D.
It will be so easy to hack this up, you'd be having models in a file, textures in a file and etc., I could mess your game in a matter of minutes.
Take what I said seriously, this needs better features AND A STORYLINE, don't make this end up like Pokemon PC.
EDIT: IT's only been a week since the last post, can't you guys wait?

Honestly guys, when you've got a project as ambitious looking as this one, you'll have to give them a little bit of time. Even on the more standard games, things being worked on aren't always worth showing (perhaps more related to preparation phase) or are wanted to be kept secret. Most games for retail that are in development don't have news every other day, you tend to get just new screenshots and information in batches
Have a little patience, it will hopefully not be too long before they have something new to show, and I'll be looking forward to whatever it is.

Maxim - the whole original idea of pokemon3d was a port of the gameboys games in full 3D. I still really like this idea and i wanted to create johto and kanto in 3d for the game. But i dont think many people will favour this as it lacks orginality.
If we did do it in those regions the demo will come out much much quicker. I can model at least 2 towns a day fully textured.
I will discuss with the team. I still want to do your idea.

Yeah, it somewhat lacks originality but I, personally am a fan of traditional Pokemon gaming. If I could choose Jouto/Kanto or new region, I would choose Jouto/Kanto without any hesitation.
Putting those regions (or at least one of them) as a secondary region(s) in the game would be satysfying for everyone but it would give you too much work.
I'll support this game whatever will it be set in but I still prefer Traditional Regions.

Johto/Kanto. 2nd Gen is still number one.
Anyway, from what I see, this may be in the top 3 of my favorite fan games. It looks promosing. The whole 3D concept just makes it even better. It would be awesome to see a walking 3D model of a Pokémon. But I have a couple questions.
1- Will fishing be in it? And if yes, will shadows appear in the water to give you a hint where the Pokémon is?
2- New character or old character?
3- All 4 generations, or just 1st and 2nd? (If Johto/Kanto)

I see most people want it to be set in Johto/Kanto but I'm not sure if 3D project members listen to people. We all know that Kanto/Johto would make this game much better and more enjoyable. I always wanted to see old things in 3D.

About time I got back on these forums! I'm a team member of Pokémon 3D. I'm working on the storyline and basic music (collating pre-made music). Yea, yea, lot's of good comments but some of you are just retarded. My job is to stir up trouble and also keep things in order.
MrCoolSanta, welcome to my retard list. Yea, anyone steps outta line, there'll be consequences. lol. But there is a ton of secret stuff DJB ain't telling you. Yea, I'm working on a secret project that only team members know about and it's the core device of the game. I guess you could say it's the complete upgrade of the PokéNav...
Anyway, I've got a big job writing this whole storyline. I have help from team members as well but I am the main writer. It's fun and long and I can tell you, there's some twists and even just one of my thoughts of what the GS Ball could be used for (mind you, in this game, if it's used, this idea has been slightly alter from a previous one).
I'll give this much away now - if we have a new region, we'll have a new storyline and plenty of cool features, an updated Pokédex, 251 Pokémon (Kanto and Johto only unfortunately; DJB's decision) and a whole new region. That's pretty cool alright and the story, music and models just make it better! I'm a musician so I only pick the best of the best for the music.
Oh and if anyone has some Battle Revolution midis, please send me them! I'm in desperate need of them!

K guys i know i havent posted in ages but we've been changing engines and everything, lol. I've now learnt to program in this new engine and i have created a menu engine, basic walking engine and now its time to try a battle engine (wt everyone wants).
As for the argument about what region to do it still isnt decided. Both sides want different ideas. Personally i would settle with johto/kanto but i guess not many ppl want that idea.
So now i;ve been looking at much much newer gfx like pokemon Diamond/Pearl. I've created some basic models and tested them in the engine, They look pretty good. I'd show you them but they still need re-texturing and refining a little.
Please still post in the topic. We're not gonna stop making this and yes we are still looking for any team members who want to join.
Any sprite artists who thinks they could create some good Diamond/Pearl sprites or textures then post here or PM me.

The game is exactly the same as the pokemon games for Gameboy but in full 3D. The storyline, characters and places will have all changed though. It is being programmed in C so we should see some high-end features. All 251 pokemon are able to be caught and used in battle. We plan to add a online battle server much later into production.

I only started programming about 3 days ago so this is what i have done>>>
Miscellaneous
Menu and walking engine linked
<<loaded and tested textured models>>
Menu Engine
Set Resolution Code - change resolution and fullscreen.
Transparency set up - images blend into background.
3D cursor - 3D cursor is now the mouse cursor.
Main background image loaded with 4 buttons - Menu objects set up.
Menu button code - code to navigate options, etc.
Change volume slider - code to change volume of game.
Walking Engine
Sky System loaded - 3D sky cube with texture set up.
Player movement - uses W,S,A,D to move player.
Gravity - player is effected by gravity
Basic collision - player is blocked by basic objects.
Mouse code added - move the players head with mouse.
Sidebar code - pressing "enter" opens the side pokemon menu. Also stops player from moving around or looking around.
Bike set up - set up speeds if player is on bike. Goes 2 times faster.
Menu slide coded - menus now dont just pop-up like the GBA games, they slide in and out of the screen.
More to come>>>
But thats just programming, lol. We've started again (sort of) in the modelling and graphics department due to the new style change (Diamond/Pearl).
Here are a couple of screenies (ignore the pokemon3D logo - it sucks! LOL) >>>

Ok, as everyone knows, only the first 251 Pokémon from Bulbasaur to Celebi will be in this game. Now we need to decide if we have only he Kanto/Johto attacks or every attack. The poll is here (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=115136) so please go and vote to help us. To remember that the more attacks there are in the game, the bigger the game file for your PC, the game could lag more AND the longer it'll take for us to implent all the attacks and release the final copy.
Just to let everyone know, we're now making some progress on the game. Hopefully we can get a demo out soon after Christmas but I wouldn't out money on it.
Btw, the forums have heaps of members but you have to get on at the exact right time of the day and week to see others on at the same time. If you're going to have 251 Pokemon you need to have the Johto attacks otherwise you'll have some plain underpowered Pokemon.
DJB MASTER
November 11th, 2007, 11:22 AM
I think we will stick with the johto/kanto attacks as its kinda weird having only 2nd gen pokemon that know 3rd/4th gen attacks. I think they will be plenty of attacks to satisfy everyone. BTW about lagging - the attacks are being coded using particles and so each attack is around 1KB in size, lol. So should have no worries with file size limits.
Yes, i know everyone is wanting more screenshots but its really hard to produce something this complex in short periods of time. You'll get ur sreenshots - i promise.
We're now working on the major part of the game - the battle system. I just have to finish my 2 pokemon models to test it and then me and the other programmer can start messing around with it.
BTW - Pokemon Professor, i know exactly who you are on about on the forums - anime. lol.
Pokemon Professor
November 11th, 2007, 11:49 PM
Anime? What about it? And you know my name is Thomas. Just use it. It'd be by nickname if it wasn't taken when I signed up. lol. If only I was a few years earlier. Back on topic - why exactly are we not having all Pokemon from 001-493 again? Because we could model them easily. We've already got people to do the first 251... You know what I mean. =S >.> More attacks is quite good though and btw, who ever said we wouldn't have Johto attacks? We are at the very least having all Kanto and Johto Pokemon and Kanto and Johto attacks - if not more of both.
jonsploder
November 13th, 2007, 01:42 AM
I think that you should start off small and then do the 4th generation. I think that it would be faster of you did the kanto/johto FIRST (region, maps, attacks, bokemon, items..................) AND THEN update it. I think that if we get a demo, it should include most of kanto and a battle/bag/menu/movement system. Then its pretty simple once those are done, just keep adding.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal.. but you won't get sued, not as long as you don't mass advertise it in terms of millions of people downloading it. Nintendo has much more to worry about than to look after people who create fan Pokemon games. You guys are pretty safe.
By the way, are you really gonna code all of the 251 Pokemon? It's pretty hardcore. I've heard from some people that you can import 3D models from ROMs and ISOs.. is it true? If so, you might want to import the models from Battle Revolution or some GameCube game, it can save you a lot of trouble.
About the game itself, my hat goes down to you, it looks incredible, especially for a fan-made game.
I've actually thought of a LOT of ideas for a Pokemon 3D RPG, I'll sum it up all here, hopefully one will help you. The ideas are mainly based on the 'what if' that Nintendo did it, so they're pretty detailed and might be too complicated, or just not appealing to you guys. From here on I'm copying and pasting from a textfile I've been saving [it's a collection of a lot of people's ideas].
Outside of battle:
-Sidequests. Tons and tons of sidequests. Like, I wanna catch/beat a one-armed shiny Scyther with a scar on it's left eye that's been causing trouble to the Safari Zone. The League itself is a sidequest too and the Legendaries are the main plot of the game.
-HMs rewritten to 3D environment. For example, Fly is completely manual and you can land everywhere you want, a very fast Run will be an HM, etc.
-HMs and TMs are not gonna be as they are, but like, say, Zelda games, you need to go to a specific place and someone there will teach the Pokemon the attack.
-There's gonna be some sort of a big city that's fully online. People will trade and battle with each other easily. It could have exclusive events, Pokemon and other stuff.
-Starting a battle is totally different. The Pokemon will move around freely, like in Pokemon Snap, and you'll challenge one you'll choose by getting out your Pokemon first. The others will go away and you'll be able to battle the Pokemon. Of course, they can challenge you too. And there's no annoying intro to battles. Battles can happen everywhere, hell, might even in the middle of performing Fly just like Surf, as long as you have Pokemon that could battle in that environment. Fully Water Pokemon can't battle outside of water [Rivers should be everywhere to allow them to battle], etc.
Inside of battle:
The battle will be used in 3rd control directly over Pokemon, and not turn-based. This is a huge difference and is more accurate since you're the one deciding if an attack misses or dodged, speed affects the battle more etc. and, of course, you don't need to sit through very long fights looking at your Pokemon standing there doing nothing taking hits. Playing Pikachu in Super Smash Bros. is similar.
Pokemon could learn 6 attacks. 2 "Supporting" ones and 4 "Main" ones. The 2 supporting ones will be physical attacks like Tackle, Jump, Dash, and some of the attacks that exist. Pokemon will never forget such attacks they learn, but just like you need to choose which 3 weapons to put on your C keys in Zelda, you'll need to choose which 2 attacks to put on the Supporting slots. Main attacks will be varied like attacks that change the stats like Growl and normal attacks.
This can allow stuff like combos, like Jump + Tackle + Thunder to increase Attack by 50 or something for that certain attack.
To heal a Pokemon, you'll need him to get close to the trainer to do that, and it'll give quite a few seconds of openings to do more damage. Pokemon will block Pokeballs by simply whipping them away [like in the manga], and you can't throw a Pokeball at an already fainted Pokemon because.. it's against your moral, or some other excuse.
This is quit long.. I hope you'll find anything useful.
The Dash
December 5th, 2007, 06:47 PM
It's not illegal as long as he doesn't make a profit from it, Nintendo have said that about Fangames before.
scienceboy
December 5th, 2007, 09:59 PM
well, i slightly disagree
the speed and such of the attacks would be left up to the pokemon - like how fast they move, and how fast teh attacks are actually done. like a delay before attacks
other than that, i'm fine with what the long post said
i've always wanted a game in which you control the pokemon themselves
slight problem though - how do you do 2vs2 battles?
Sayaendo
December 6th, 2007, 05:57 AM
@ scienceboy
About the speed, the stat still influences your speed of movement. The higher the stat, the higher you can move with the Pokemon around, the more control you'll have using something like Dash etc. For example something like, if Speed is up'd by 50 during battle, you can move a little faster, there's less delay before attempting a Main attack, stuff like that. And overall the Speed stat by itself influences some of the attacks like Gyro Ball.
About 2v2.. I dunno. Probably the computer will control the other one, and you can switch whenever you like. But since the game is still early in the series I don't think he'll put 2v2 this early.

Well we have already got most of the pokemon models done, they just need smoothing a little so they look better in the engine. I've been working mostly on the GUI at the moment and programming collision systems. I've just invested in some new software to make some high-quality terrains and skycubes. Also i've figured out how i'm going to do the water in the game - using shaders/fixed function pipeline. It might be a little too realisitc though with semi-cartoon graphics and full reflecting water, lol.
We've been experimenting with particle systems for the battle engine. As for 2vs2 it would be extremely hard to implement as AI systems are hard enough for 1 opponent, let alone 2!!! Multiplayer hasn't really had much thought yet as i dont have the knowledge to program multiplayer gameplay...YET. Tonight i will try basic multiplayer like trying to play a sound from 1 pc- to another. Then i will try sending simple variables > the basics of the trading cards which i hope to implement.

What are you gonna use for the pokemon models? cards? sprites on a 3d plane? I knew a way to rip the 3D models out of Stadium 2, but that wouldn't give you all the models :\

It's made in C/C++ so I highly doubt it.

Well it's built upon DirectX so i guess no support for macs, sry. We are using full 3D models hopefully with animation (hardest part), but it shouldn't be too hard to build. The website for the game is really a forum >> check my signature for the link to the pokémon3D forum.
I've been messing with multiplayer and i got a connection established and i am working on sending pokemon cards between 2 pcs so that you can trade online. If that is a success then battling is the next step. The battle system is yet to be started as we are still drafting it and setting up the engine to go into battle, etc.

2 things
1 - for mac users, you might be able to use openGL to get it to work with bootcamp, or just use bootcamp. i don't know, i just know that openGL works with wine on linux, so yeah ... i have experience with windows and linux but not macs
2 - In battles, will you physically control your pokemon like in super smash bros? its one thing thats always annoyed me, in the anime the pokemon actually move and that affects stuff, but when they introduced 3d such as in gale of darkness or collesium they didnt bother to put that in >_<

Wow looks pretty good. Also fun to play. Are any D/P pokemon featured?
DJB MASTER
February 2nd, 2008, 02:31 AM
only the first 251 pokemon are featured, sry. As for battling we always liked the idea of being to control your own pokemon and select ur own moves. This was it is more realistic as you can actual do moves such as quick attack, fly (fancy controlling charizard in the air? lol), etc.
It is hard but generally better. If not then we will have to stick to turn based battles. Maybe a vote should be arranged?

Yeah but boot camp costs a couple hundred to get :(
it use to be free but now you either need to buy it or get the newest updates on Mac and both of them are expensive

Yeah Controlling poke'mon is gonna be awesome
although i wonder how they plan to make attacks that lower accuracy effect the game.
I can't wait to control really tiny pokemon and see if i can piss people off by running away constantly
Horray Caterpie seems more fun to be now

probably by lowering the reaction time of the pokemon to your controls ...
additionally, a caterpie isn't very fast ... and AOE attacks would still hit them. try running away from a surf attack, or an earthquake attack.

Hmm yes very true
well either wa i'm really psyched about this game
I can't wait to see how some of the attacks are gonna work into the game like Substitute and i can't wait to use Double Team in the game either!! It should be annoying for a character who dosen't have any AOE attacks to try and pick 1 Pokemon out of a couple of copies

you don't necessarily need AOE attacks though to beat double team ... many times in the anime, they've used flamethrower or vine whip and just slammed them through them all one right after another. those definatley aren't AOE attacks and they still beat doubleteam
actually, one thing i'm really interested in seeing is terrain modifiers.

Hmmm, dont exactly know what you mean by this, but i'm guessing your talking about how moves affect the environment in real-time. Like if you used earthquake - the ground would be all smashed and cracked and if you used blizzard then there would be snow everywhere.
If this is not what you mean then please explain, thanks...

I kinda meant like if you were grasslands, then fire attacks would be more effective because it would set the grass on fire, if you were in the desert movement would be slowed unless you were ground/flying/hovering, volcanos water/ice types would have big disadvantage
that kind of stuff

What Do you plan to do about the Fish poke'mon like Goldeen and Magikarp?
are you only gonna let them fight in only some water terrain or are you gonna make everthing trippy by having them be able to fight on land?

That would add some interesting things to the battle system, making gameplay totally different. I support the idea.
Graphics wise, I think it would really intersting to see, like you said, the battlefield damaged from an earthquake or a dig. Or maybe once somebody uses a water type attack like surf, there would be puddles of water around the battlefield.
Anyway, I wouldn't give this idea much importance for now, I would rather focus on the gameplay and leave the graphical ideas 'till later.
Best of luck!

That is a tricky decision to come to. Do i let any pokemon fight in any terrain or only one's it is "possible" to fight in. You cant expect a water pokemon to fight in dry terrain, but they did that in Pokémon Stadium 1&2 >> so maybe it is feasible.
Affecting the environment is pretty difficult but it depends on the move. Attacks like sandstorm and rain dance are pretty much basic particle effects. As for attacks like earthquake, waterfall and surf are hard as water is hard to fake alone > but flowing water!!!
I'll have a think about how i can do this and maybe create some videos of the moves...

So is this game gonna have stats like speed, Sp. ATk, defense and all the rest in it?
are you gonna make the actual speed of a Pokemon rise in the game when ever it levels up?
DJB MASTER
February 12th, 2008, 08:20 AM
Well the thing is, the way i have made the battle graphics and other things, i think i can only do turn-based battles. Real-time is going to be very, very hard for both the programmer and the player.
Turn-based wont show as much realism, like the effects of moves that lower speed or accuracy but it is more like the offical games. I am still planning the battle system...

Oh Well i'm sure it's gonna still be a fantastic game :D
and for the story line are you planning on having Cinematic cut scenes?
DJB MASTER
February 15th, 2008, 10:07 PM
Yeh, we planned cutscenes from the beginning so they have got to be included. Dont worry about real-time controlling pokemon > i am planning to add a mini-games section. I had this idea with another team member a long time ago back in the days when i had just started the project. I have a couple already drafted and 1 in production.
I'll post a demo of the mini-game when i have completed enough of it. Cya...
