other than that, i have to consult why your rhyperior absorbed a Psychic like that. even with a sp def boost from sandstream, it would need full sp def evs to absorb a STAB special attack like that. the use of substitute didn't mask that at all. i wonder what would've happened if surf would've hit rhyperior... would it have done less than 50% damage? that would be very questionable.

Well you have to understand that Rhyperior has a very unique ability called Solid Rock that reduces the damage from super effective attacks. It think it was 2x is reduced to 1.3x and 4x is reduced to 2.8x. (something along those lines)

Yeah, however, Rhyperior has really bad Special Defense (like most Rock types). I've OHKOed many with an un-STABed Energy Ball. Double weakness and a good Special Attack from my Gar, but a STABed Psychic (not sure who Samson used) should've put a decent dent in Rhyperior.

If it were from someone like Alakazam (unboosted), it would do at least 50% damage, and that's being generous.

Simple. It has a high,(29-31, I forget exactly) SpD IV, nearly 200 SpD EVs, almost as much HP, and a Sandtsream boost. Sure, it still dies to Surf, but it can take many specials without issue. It took a Focus Blast from a Magmortar easily once. Also, Samson, I may have had Light Screen up, I don't remember.

And for Solid Rock, it lowers Super effective damage by 33%. 2x becomes 1.33x, and 4x becomes 2.67x. Regardless, that wouldn't affect things here.
