i read somewhere that to chain pokemon you need to use pokeradar, but when you use the radar it doesnt show you which pokemon is there, just that there is a pokemon in that particular part of the grass. how does this work?

Read the topic "Chaining problems" I posted there, or... just go to this video and it should help you.

well i know that chaining is when you see the same pokemon a said number of times in a row, and it increases your chances of getting a shiny. that's about all i know

Chaining is when you use the Poké Radar to fight a specific Pokémon continuously. The Poké Radar causes grass patches to shake, which, when you walk into it, triggers a battle with a Pokémon. After catching or fainting said Pokémon, the Radar activates again automatically. If you walk into the right patch of grass (based on guidelines for good chaining), you will (hopefully) run into the same Pokémon again.
Doing this for a long period of time raises the chances of finding a Shiny patch of grass, holding a shiny version of the chained Pokémon, so this is the main use of chaining.
