What is your most preferred web browser for surfing the internet?

Kairi

I like Mozilla Firebird and an IE shell called MYIE2 the most. ^_^ MYIE2 has a lot better selection of good features, but Mozilla's engine is much better compared to IE's flawed one.

I'm trying Firebird out now, and it beats Internet Explorer for Mac (which isn't supported anymore, that makes it bad).
It also supports vBulletin's shortcuts (alt+s for send)

Kairi

It has a lot of really nice plugins too, be sure to check those out. I assume they work for the Mac OS as well. I like Tab Bar Extensions personally. ^_^

It's the first browser for the Mac OS that actually is compatible with the WYSIWYG toolbar. Any other preferred web browsers, everyone? ^_^

Kairi
October 1st, 2003, 11:43 PM
I don't use the toolbar because it doesn't work with my right-click spell checker. ^_^; I have been hogging this though, but I imagine most people here don't even know there is life outside of IE. =/

I use Internet Explorer on both my Macintosh and Windows. It runs better on windows instead on macintosh. it's sooo darn slow on the macintosh.

In additon, I use Netcape 7.1.. that uses the Mozilla Rendering Engine.. :P.. but it's so darn slow than IE!

I've really only used Internet Explorer...

there was a period where I used NeoPlanet, but that was when my computer was acting evil and Internet explorer wouldn't work until I reloaded my computer...

The web brower I use is just IE, it works best for me then other ones that I tried, such as Netscape. But I might find something diffrent, but I doubt it.

I use Mozilla Firebird and IE 6.0. I prefer IE over MF, I believe. As for the tabs. I usually have so many things ope, all I have to do is click on Internet Explorer in my tool bar and voila. I love XP. ^_^

:/ I don't really like Internet Explorer for Mac, especially the Macintosh version. I find it... buggy.

Mozilla Firebird made it to become my default internet browser. :)
In fact, I might dump my feature-poor Internet Explorer.

heh... i used internet explorer since when i just got the computer 4 years ago i know nothing about computers. So since IE is the one i started with, IE is the one i stick with... until tomorrow when i flush everything out for this computer's hard drive and start everything new... (hopefully nothing goes wrong in the reformat or else i'm kinda screwed...)

After that maybe i'll try some other web browers that people suggested here... Mozilla thingie and etc.

until i get my own computer (this is my family computer, so i can't download wallpaper, parents...*sigh*)

Hiroshi Sotomura
October 2nd, 2003, 11:42 AM
RealOne's browser IS Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer is an OEM component, so programs can intergrate with it).

:/ Internet Explorer? Bleh. It's not even intergrated on the Mac.

Most extensions in Mozilla Firebird are crossplatform Kairi. But... I must say I like it!

And even though my mom likes to use this computer sometimes, I still have authority over the wallpaper. :P She actually likes the one I have now a lot.

Hiroshi Sotomura
October 2nd, 2003, 09:19 PM
Internet Explorer is good at rendering, bad on features, good on Windows intergration, bad on Macintosh, good on... you get the point.

But browsing with Tabs doesn't have a replacement. You can't have the startbar all filled... so you can save space.

I still don't see why Internet Explorer still manages to survive... Netscape was powerful...

Safari (Mac OS X) has a few problems.

(>.< I meant Konquerer not Nautilus)

Wait, wait, wait. Maybe I'm just brain dead BUT... Isn't it Microsoft Internet Explorer? I don't see why Mac users need it, it should be strictly for Windows.

BTW, Jake, I'm currently trying to find a CD to put my copy of Linux on. It's a special one where you can choose to load it from the CD when you reboot. It's slightly bigger then 700 MB's. Just my luck. >.>;

Also, Netscape is the worst browser ever, I think.

EDIT :: If anybody is using IE and the Alt + S trick doesn't work, get IE 6.0 SP 1. Worked fine for me. ^_^

Not everything Microsoft is for Windows.

There's Microsoft Office v.X, which is great, and feature-full,
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/images/icon_messenger_sm.gif
MSN Messenger, which doesn't have a purpose of being made, IT'S JUST AS BAD AS IE FOR MAC,
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/virtualpc/images/icon_virtualpc_sm.gif
Virtual PC, which Microsoft aquired from Connectix,
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/images/wmp1.jpg
Microsoft Windows Media Player, again as feature-weak as IE and MSN Messenger,
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/internetexplorer/images/icon_explorer_sm.gif
And last, and I wish least, Internet Explorer, the most boring Internet Browser for the Mac...

Meowth346 says Internet Explorer is mostly used because it actually came with Windows. I should really remove that choice of having Internet Explorer in the selections (but I don't want to as much as I can't).

Redhat Linux comes with Mozilla...
Mac OS X Panther does not encourage the use of Internet Explorer (which is a good thing too...) but do encourage the use of Safari, and that's waaay better than IE for Mac. Too bad Jaguar came with it. I use Mozilla Firebird for all my applications though.

Kairi, would you encourage the use of Mozilla Firebird?

Internet Explorer does come with windows... when i reformated my hard drive (with a lot of difficulties), internet explorer is one of the few programs on my computer at that moment...

i still use internet explorer... i tried mozilla and lags like crazy (yes my computer is poor... if anyone wants to donate a computer for the poor then i'm your perfect choice to donate to ^_^;; )

Of course I do. The web is entirely different once you have experienced tabs, and the gecko engine. Even PC seems to look better in Mozilla to me. When I think of people using IE, I do feel sad for them. They are open to security holes, and not getting half the features they should.

Haruka
October 27th, 2003, 10:53 PM
I use a comination of Mozilla Firebird 0.7 and Internet Explorer 6. :D

Well basicly, I only use Firebird to test my pages on my website which is 100% compatable.. :P..

On my macintosh, I have no choice but to use IE 5.1.5. :D .. since it doesn't use MacOS X (too old to run it anyways.)

Hiroshi Sotomura

Haruka, use Internet Explorer 4.0-4.5. That's better and runs faster on older Mac models.

I reckon the tabbed browsing is slight tad bad, so I got Tabbrowser Extensions. Have you tried it, Kairi?

Use control+t to create a tab.

You can get extensions to go with Firebird. Go to the extensions site (a link can be found in the preferences dialog) and click the external link.

I use Tabbrowser extensions and WebDeveloper Toolbar.
If you develop a site WebDeveloper Toolbar is essential.

I still don't see why Internet Explorer still manages to survive... Netscape was powerful...

I can answer your question, to little, to late. Don't get me wrong, I was impressed with the 6&7 series, but most people already gave up on it. Now if Netscape 6 came out about two years earlier, we'd probably be in the ugliest browser war to date, with both sides trying to trump each other adding more features. My main concern over alternate browsers though is there not easy enough to use, I wouldn't dare put my parents on Mozilla due to the tabbed browsing, which I don't like myself. Right now I'm figuring Microsoft has about 5-10 years before anybody comes close to challenging them, so the've got pleanty of time to upgrade.

Hiroshi Sotomura

Microsoft has worsened the market albeit slightly.
Here's an article I posted a while ago (as Jake):
Browsing gods and monsters
When Microsoft starts charging for Internet Explorer, open source developers hope to pay a price of it's own.
With Microsoft's new browser strategy showing signs of holding the market to ransom, open source developers couldn't be happier. They see it as an opportunity to reach more consumers - those who will want to dump Internet Explorer.

In June, Microsoft dropped the bombshell that it would not offer IE free of charge after version 6.0 SP 1. Instead, customers will have to upgrade to the Windows "Longhorn" OS in 2005 to obtain an improved browser.

Meanwhile, Netscape has had its lifeline cut by parent company AOL following a $1.2 billion agreement with Microsoft. The cash payment - ostensibly over old legal proceedings - has AOL customers using IE exclusively.

Microsoft claims any further improvement of the browser requires complete intergration with the OS. IDC analyst Joel Martin is one who doesn't agree. Microsoft is manoeuvring to avoid any future litigation from competitors, he said. "By making it a paid-for application [rather than a free download], no-one can argue it's not part of the whole Windows operating system."

Mozilla, which formed the core of the late Netscape browser, is happy, however.

"Peopl say there's no innovation in the browser space, but that's only true if you're an Internet Explorer user," said Mozilla self-styled "chief lizard wrangler" Mitchell Baker.

Mozilla offers conveniences not in IE, such as tabbed browsing (multiple Web pages can be worked on in one browser window), direct-type searching (simply type a word to search for it, without the need to open a Find dialogue box) and almost impenetrable security against web bugs, scripts and spyware that rely on Microsoft scripting vulnerabilities.

In answer to criticism that Mozilla's browser has become unnecessarily large and feature-heavy, Baker says the group has refocused on devopment of leaner versions of it's browser and email client, which will have to compete head-on with IE and Outlook Express.

The new browser, Mozilla Firebird, and email client, Mozilla Thunderbird, are in the late stages of development and can be downloaded from www.mozilla.org.

According to Baker, the major barrier to Mozilla uptake is in making customers and the industry aware that a good alternative exists. "Distribution is always key in the consumer market. Obviously Linux is one area, but there's a whole slab of people ... who are becoming increasingly wary of being drawn into the Microsoft realm of complex proprietary systems and ongoing licence fees.

"Microsoft got its browser monopoly by pursuig illegal, anti-competitive activities. But there is a superior alternative," she said.

The Mozilla Foundation will work with governments worldwide to help educate their constituents on their open source options.

But Baker admits that distribution of the browser is tough to crack, considering IE ships with every version of Windows, and PC hardware manufacturers won't talk to Mozilla about distribution arrangements.

Independent Australian analyst Bruce McCabe agreed. "It's not that people don't like the idea of an alternative to Microsoft, because they do." he said. "It's more that people feel they will have less hassles and hang-ups with IE because they have heard that many Web sites rely on Internet Explorer for correct rendering."

Baker refused the claim. Mozilla has worked directly with hundreds of the most popular Web sites worldwide to ensure its code is standards-compliant, she said.

"There was a very significant effort to go to companies using IE-specific code - predominantly Internet banking providers - to help them rewrite the sites to they would be standards-compatible. It had dramatic results. Only a tiny fraction of major sites are still IE-dependant."

The Mozilla Foundation is working to make it easier for businesses to get actively involved in the devlopment of its browser and accompanying email client. Tech-leaders such as Sun, IBM and Red Hat plan to continue supporting Mozilla due to its importance as the leadingbrowser for Linux, Baker explained.

With US$2 million in hand as a severance sweetener from AOL, and a team of 10 decision-makers to run the Foundation, Baker is confident Mozilla will present a cohesive face to business and consumers in the years to come.
