Your friends do not know what they're talking about. Either they're lying or they got false information. Unfortunately you cannot go to any of the other regions in this game, limiting you only to Sinnoh and the few islands offshore.

It is possible a future Pokemon game will have a feature to travel to other regions (a G/S/C remake maybe?), but until then just settle with what you have in Diamond and Pearl. It's good enough as it is.
