He has good days and bad days. I'll say mediocre. Manages to pull through with ridiculous tactics.

I'm wary as we had a very extensive thread on this some months ago. However, if the brain trust wants to go at it again, I'll see.

Well hmmm tough question-NOT!! What kind of question is this? Of course he sucks he wins battles the completely whack and pretty much impossible way. Plus, half the badges Ash wins, were from saving a gym from Team Rocket.

He, along with his pikachu, has an infinate amount of potential, he just doesn't use it all the time. He has his good days, and his bad. I enjoy watching him become a greater trainer when he comes up with these ingenious tactics, but then loses it all in the next episode! Remember in Frontier when Brandon said he'd come up with a unique, genious style taht's all his own?? Well then where was it when he fought Paul?? I don't even know what his style was/is, but he doesn't use it the episode after! If he'd only use what he's learning, he'd be the greatest trainer in any region

He'll be dropped from the anime and they'll focus on someone else, maybe Dawn, and least she probably wouldn't lose to Paul if she has all her Pokemon in thier final forms (Empoleon, Lopunny and Floatzel)

Nah, Ash'll never leave. Even though there are many people who hate him, there are many more people who like him and would never watch the show without him.
He may have competed in 3 leagues, but there are hudreds of people out there in the anime world who are much older and have been trainer for much longer.
I don't think it matters that he loses to the first gyms in the region. Levels are rarely mentioned in the anime which makes sense. The first gyms in the games are only low level because it would be *slightly* stupid to have level 50 Pokemon right at the start of the game. In the anime trainers don't have to go to Brock/Roark whoever first, they don't have annoying people or weird plants that block their way. They could decide to go the Sunyshore gym first. They obviously make the last gym battle in the anime the hardest so it at least looks like Ash's team has got stronger. Yeah, so losing to the first gym isn't a bad thing.
Anyway, you have to remember that some trainers DON'T make it to the league. They aren't able to collect 8 badges in a year. I remember Oak saying the 2 other Pallet Town trainers were unable to make it to Indigo Plateau.
So my answer is...uh...yeah, Ash is quite strong. Not the strongest out there though, definatly. But that's to keep things interesting. Ash sweeping gyms and Elite Four members would get VERY boring. His Pokemon's strengths just seem to go up and down randomly sometimes though, to suit the writers needs...

Ash stinks. How could someone with so much experience lose so much, especially to people like Roark!

Well, I think that the problem with Ash is that he keeps changing his pokes for keeping the interest of the ones who watch the series (that's also the reason of why they created so many generations).
I think that in the last season, they should make Ash gather all his bests pokes (like his Allmighty Charizard) and make him win the Pokemon League, and then start over with another main character, like YuGiOh GX

I wish Ash would use Snorlax and Heracross more.

Well, it all depends on how we define "good."
If we were to transfer over his tactics/Pokes to our style of competitive play, involving numbers, math, EVs, IVs, stats and the like, Ash would be whipped in no time.
However, if we look at good as a comparison in his world, there's quite a different story. If we define "good" as in better than those around him, Ash would have to be considered great. He's beaten all the gyms in three regions (and he's starting his fourth), not to mention beaten a couple Elite Four members, Frontier Brains, and made it into the top places in multiple Pokemon Leagues. Only a handful of people can say that in the Poke-world.
So, I'd say he has to be pretty good. Though he seems clueless at times (and for some reason he loses what should be easy battles), he's gotta be pretty skilled by comparison considering all of his achievements.

It depends on what you mean. As we've seen in the anime, he's pretty tactful and resourceful, and usually wins the battles he fights. But you must consider, the battles are different in the anime then they are in the games. In the anime, if a Pokemon is strong enough it can over-come type differences, but in the games those weaknesses stay the entire way. So I agree with Grant, if he was battling in the games he'd go down easily. But in the anime and manga, he's pretty darn good.

I think Ash is doing very good. Because he trained his Pokemons well and win any gym battles.

he stinks. Has traveled in the pokemon world for years and can't even beat the first gym leader of a new region on his first try, his pikachu is gay cause it never seemes to die until u hit it 50 thousand times (which is nothing like pikachu in the games) and wins by using crazy straigies

The first gym's are not like the gyms in the games, as you can go to any gym at anytime, so saying him losing to the first gym in a new region as a refection of his ability has no substance.

I think Ash is a bad trainer because he is too stupid to realize that Pikachu can never beat an Onix.
I don't hate Ash,because without him there would be no hot female lead characters, but he still could do better.

Ash Ketchum lol his last name sounds like "Catch em" how original...
He's exceedingly uncoordinated at catching, raising and fighting with pokemon, if he didnt have his travelling companions he'd probably be dead by now and he obviously uses a Gameshark or something because:
a) His pikachu can affect rock and ground type pokemon and uses agility as an attack
b) His pokemon use WAY more than four moves
c) His pokemon can evolve half-way through a battle
d) He can come back from the dead if pokemon cry at him

He can't beat a rock gym leader with a grass type, either Roark is supreme or Ash Fails.
Ash is made of FAIL, he has this really close relationship with Pikachu.

Best answer yet!
I think he probably bribes the gym leader beforehand the battle we dont see it cause its in the break, and he waves money in there face and tells them the conditions of which he wants to win, and if they compliement his idiotic sorry scratch that his brave and daring moves they get an extra 500poke dollar

"Dodge, Pikachu, dodge!" (notice that his pokemon always manage to dodge for some strange reason.)
"Use thundershock!" (on a ground type, mind you.)
"Oh no, it has taken a lot of damage? Will it manage to win?" (Note that he calls his pokemon "it" and no matter how much damage they take, they manage to stay alive for 10 more turns.)
That is Ash's strategy. Ash is mediocre and second rate. He always manages to pull something out at the last minute that is utterly stupid and doesn't make sense, but works. Battles are boring and easily forgettable. His pokemon never gain experience except for Pikachu who somehow loses when he should be super powerful.

BINGO! If you're always (or in this case, usually) winning, one cannot assume it is luck. If I battle people hundreds of times, all of them "better" than me, but still manage to win a majority of the matches, you can't say it's just luck. In order for someone to get lucky that many times, it would be absurd. The only possible conclusion is though Ash isn't exactly orthodox in his skills, he knows how to win. If our question of "good" revolves around how likely they are to win, then Ash should indeed be considered good.
