Bad art?

Posted August 9th, 2011 at 1:58 AM by Anastasia.R

I’ve been read a little more into art vocab, looking up my favorite artists and what they say or think. The other day, one of my favorite artists, Purplekecleon, was drawing on live-stream. It took hours, and I couldn’t watch it all, but I did see a link to her Tumblr. I saw she wrote a short entry that I really liked.

It was about “belittling” your work. You know, saying “Oh, hey I made a crappy drawing, check it out” or saying negative thing about your work. I think this can relate to more than visual arts (like music and writing). You could be joking around by saying “Oh, I wrote this story, but it’s completely crappy, ha-ha”, but then who’s seriously going to read your story then? Or look at your art when you’re saying it’s “bad” or “Crappy”? Do you think you want to read, listen to, or look at work that the creator thinks is bad? Are you trying to receive comments such as: “Oh, don’t say that, it was great!”? I think when people comment on their own work with negativity, they’re either joking or just looking for nice compliments. Are you going to take the person seriously? I wouldn’t, but that’s me. And when people try to back up their negativity with comments like “But I’m just telling the truth!” I just don’t believe them, and I get a little upset. Why?

Let’s get something straight; No art is bad. It's how you see the work. I think there's only good art, because there's no such thing as "bad art. That's just me, but there really isn't good or bad art. It's just art. Whether you like it or not, there’s no such thing as bad artwork, writing, or music. There just isn’t. It’s art, there’s no right or wrong, people just view it differently. It’s not like math problems, where, you either solved it wrong or right and you're sure of it. You can view a painting and think “Wow, it’s beautiful!” while someone else can think differently. Writing and music is the same way because they’re art. You could listen to a song and think it’s completely horrible. That’s your own opinion of that song. Every single person will have their own opinions. We don’t have to agree with each other, but we can say our perspectives on something.

So, saying you’re work is “Bad” and you’re only being “truthful” is just depressing and not true. Your work is never bad. No ones’ work is bad. Try to use positive comments, or just not mention any negativity towards your work. I think people would be taken more seriously, and the creator will think better. You know self-esteem stuff? If you constantly repeat your work is “crappy”, sooner or later, you will actually believe it is. Now, why would you want to think like that!? Is that really going to motivate you to keep working and improve to be better? Or is that going to motivate you to soon give up and quit? Think about it for a bit. Do you think great writers or musicians get by with “Check out this new album, but I honestly think it’s crap,” or “Buy my new book! Take a read, but it’s not really that good,”? I’m pretty sure they don’t. If you think something in your work isn’t that good, or it doesn’t seem right, it’s better to just keep it to yourself.

I’m going to be honest, I did use to say negative things about my work (I’ve said it a few times recently, too), but now I’m trying to change that. I’m going to be positive and try harder. My work is good, and will only get better. That’s how I’m going to think from now on. This entry is sorta a rant or just a thought I had, but if it changes how people view or think about art, then that’s pretty cool. Lots of this is entry is just my own opinion, and I usually don’t write a lot of blogs with my own opinions on a subject. Since this was an art subject, I really felt the need to write it down somewhere. I’m not sure if I’ll be posting more blogs like this, but I if I feel that urge to write something like this, then I’ll post it again.

What a very inspiring entry, even though if its meant to be a rant. Reading it, personally, was like a lecture or more of a well-meant chide. It reminds me of the movie Ratatouille which has one of the moral line "Anyone can cook." Its just like what you said, "Anyone can draw or do art, it's just how good their standard is." Such things in the aesthetics field are always opinionated but I concur that as the creator of such works, one shouldn't get down so fast and belittle the work. Oh gosh, now you made me teary. c; x3

Dude chill. 90% of the time, when an artist belittles his/her own work, it's ironic. Sarcastic.

Of course there are tells that give away any chance of them actually feeling that way, but you must also remember that your worst critic is often yourself, not others. Sometimes you gotta put on some modesty or belittlement so the trolls don't waste their time, and so people don't feel threatened by confidence, and let me say that happens a lot here...people mistaking confidence for arrogance and what-have-you.

Maybe there isn't 'bad' art or 'good' art, but you gotta admit there is great art.

Bu yeah, I agree with you. The more confident you feel, the better the work you make is going to be.

Whenever I attempt to draw, I always say something like, "This looks like crap. I suck." But I never, ever look for complements. Every time I belittle myself on my so-called "artwork," I mean it. If someone gives me a complement, then thanks, I appreciate it. But I never fish for complements.

Also, this is unrelated, but I love purplekecleon's artwork so much. :D Ana, you should totally join that PMD-Explorers group if/when you have time. :P pick treecko and torchic. XD

    LMFAO you tell em!

but yea, nice read, i totally agree with you.
and if a guys like "not my best work, kinda bad, but i was trying a new style/still improving and trying to get better/etc", then that's fine. at least they are trying.

this reminds me of girls who post pics of themselves on facebook, and are like, "omg im so ugly", and then get 50+ replies of other kiddies saying "dont say that you look beautiful/stop being so gorgeous, give me some of that/why are you so cute/gorg, miss you, mwah mwah, etc ,etc ,etc..."

    freaking pisses me off.

The way I see it, if someone says "this sucks but please concrit!", that is ABSOLUTELY OKAY and encouraged. If you take the time to finish something you thought was crap, obviously you care about it and want to know exactly how to make it better. Maybe you'll even point out your own weak spots and just don't know how to improve so you post it up and ask.

But if you think something is legitimately bad and you don't care that it's bad, I can't help but assume that you're either posting crack art (which is okay, whatever, lol) or else you're fishing for compliments and you think it's okay but in case someone else thinks differently, you want sort of an escape route. ~_~

I think lots of my art is bad, but I no longer pay enough attention to visual art which is why I no longer post it around anywhere. :P I think if more people REALLY thought their work was bad but weren't asking for crit, they just wouldn't post it.
