SATs - Part Deux

Posted May 3rd, 2009 at 12:19 PM by Gummy

For those of you who didn't read my last entry, I took the most important test of my life Saturday morning. Let's start our story the night before, when my only problem was getting to sleep. Before officially waking up, I was awakened by two SAT related nightmares. One had me oversleeping and the other had me going to the wrong test center. After that, I got ready and my dad dropped me at the correct test center. When it's finally my turn to be assigned a room, the guy at the counter asks for my ID, and I reach for my wallet. It's not there. So then I have to wait for my dad to find my wallet back at home and bring it all the way over here.

Okay, so the test starts with an essay. What the hell kind of test starts with an essay. It was one of those essays where you right about a personal experienced, so I just BSed some stuff so my life seemed interesting. The rest of the test is divided into ten sections, which will either test my grammar, reading or math skills. The first six sections were cake, but after the 15 minute break I hit a bump. The math was getting complex and there was no way I could have made it to the end in time without a calculator. I raise my hand to asks for one and the proctor just laughs and turns away. WTF? Had a taken this at my actual High School, I would have been provided with a calculator, but apparently this school was too poor to buy calculators for everyone. So yeah, while the majority of the class breezes through the sections, I'm struggling on question 5. Thankfully most of the questions were multiple choice, meaning if I saw my answer as one of the choices then my math was good.

So I left my house at 8:00 AM and finally at 2:20 PM, I arrive home. I originally planned to do this blog immediately after the test, but I had never felt so drained in my life. In fact, I still feel a little dead and I've got some college related crap due Tuesday. My scores are coming in about three weeks, but regardless of how good/bad they are, I'm retaking the exam with my own calculator. If I act like a total A-hole throughout this week, now you know why.

if you're a tl;dr type of person, here's all you need to know:

Hey, I took the SAT yesterday too.

Just chill. It's not the end of the world. XD

Starting with an essay was random, as the ACT ends with the essay and gives you more time anyways, iirc. Anyways, yeah, I totally BSd about my life too and made it sound corny. They love corny things and big words and many examples.

I hated how they divided the sections. Good God, it seemed like it would never end. If only they compiled all of the math, etc in one hour long session.. x_x

You should have really brought a calculator.. I'm helpless without a calculator because I've become so dependent on mine. :x

Don't feel so bad about it; you can take it again (even though it's a betch to pay for), but I'm sure you did better than a lot of kids.

I wonder what they did when calculators didn't exist? xD

Umm you can have your scores canceled up to some time next week, I believe.

Usually, it's kosher to bring your own calculator. That's what I did yesterday when I took it. You can borrow one from your school for the weekend if you explain the situation.
But, alas, yesterday when I took the SAT, I accidentally bubbled section four where section three is supposed to be bubbled because I inadvertently skipped a section.
Luckily I was able to fix the situation in the end, but geez.
I also had a misbubbling problem when I took the PSAT earlier this year. I'm just not good with SAT's I guess.

ACT, however, I'm good at haha.

It gives you five minutes more time.

They didn't have as advanced problems..? I guess.

And, personally, I kind of liked starting off with the essay; I like writing essays, but I dread doing it under time limits. Starting off with the essay, for me = no more worrying about essay :D

I had a bubbling problem too, and it happened to be for the longest part too. Thank God my proctor was half asleep the entire time, or I would have got caught bubbling section 5 answers while we were on section 6. xD

That comment made you sound like an oldie, Lightning. xD
