MMORPGs? I just don't see how are they fun.

Posted September 23rd, 2008 at 12:33 PM by Jeremy

Well sweeties, I decide to make a little rant seeing as though my lil sister is hooked on one and nearly everybody at my college is either hooked on World of Warcraft or MapleStory.

I grew up playing classics such as Super Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Pokémon (Before it came out in English.), Mega Man, Street Fighter 2, Castlevania, ect. It may not even show, but I was even exposed to some great PC games such as StarCraft. WarCraft 3, Diablo 1 and 2, Half-Life, Doom, ect. So I can safely say I'm a true gamer.

Anyway, I decided to try out World of Warcraft, not only to see how a RTS became a MMORPG, but to have fun ever since I saw that episode of South Park featuring WoW. After I downloaded and setup an account, and started playing...I was...confused. At first I thought attacking would be real time, (I hit a button, and something will happen), but it was different then I imagine. After spending a minute getting used to the combat system, I was off to accomplish some quests!

At first, the quest seemed normal, they were keeping me busy..for about 10 minutes. After awhile they felt like a chore. I was playing Pokémon to keep me amused while playing WoW. After getting getting further in the game (which took weeks since every quest was boring me to death), I found the suppose reason why people play WoW, the PVP.

The places like Warsong Glutch were fun, for a while. But I realize, to have a more enjoyable experrience, I had to level up and get better weapons, and to do that, I need to do more quests.
After doing a few more quests, I realize all the quests had the same requirement.
Either they had you to:
Go to Point A to Point B.
Go to Point A to Point B to defeat X amount of monsters and/or gather Y amount of items then return to Point A.
Go to Go to Point A to Point B return to Point A to go to Point C.
Ect.

This proved to be quite troublesome and borring in my opinion. For me, there was no drive to do these quests and as well I don't see any skill required to do so. All I see is the only requirement to master the game is if you're able to to use the WASD keys and use a mouse. I fail to see any strategy playing by yourself. The enjoyment is playing with other people. I tried to make friends and have a group to do quests with, yet people I met were either immature, snobbish, or just plain mean.
Well that was my experience with WoW, so yeah. I don't know about you, but it didn't seem too fun or an addictive experience for me.

As for MapleStory, all I gotta say is I was kinda disappointed on how it played...I'll probably re-install it and give it another shot. I've been level 5 in there for a year already.

As a true gamer I'm sure you know that not everyone loves everything then. Sounds like MMOs just aren't your thing (I'm not a fan either, tbh), but I know my brother's poured hours into some, not to mention the millions of people who play them. So obviously a lot of people get enjoyment out of them.

Just like a ton of people can't JRPGs but I adore them. XD

YOU'VE NEVER PLAYED RAGNAROK ONLINE THEN!!
Honestly, I could create an essay on why I love MMORPGs.
Actually, I can create an essay on why Ragnarok Online is the king of all games.
You've just got to find the one that suits you and you'll love it forever <3

I thought MapleStory was fun for a while but I think the highest I ever got was level 30-something? :[ I never understood how my brother had like 3 characters over level 60--on the public server! @_@

MMOs are supposed to be a lot better on private servers too, btw. I still don't find them too terribly appealing, but I'm also scared to try some--I don't wanna get addicted, haha.

I love World of Warcraft, but I believe my mindset is made for MMO's, yours maybe isn't. I like questing, while maybe listening to music, and talking to a friend who does the same. It's calm and fun, most of the time

Yeah, it's just which MMO you play. Most have the same basis, but some don't or have a good way of approaching it. For MMOs like WoW (kill monsters, do quest and level) it really won't appeal unless you make some good friends. And like you said on WoW they are immature, so that's why I didn't stay. Only few like Mabinogi (no click and keep attacking, you have to defend, break defenses with special attacks, and juggle all kinds of actions) will not be a grind. Ragnarok can be a grind but it's much easier to make friends and the class system is really nice. :3

But they're are MMOs that arn't like that. Things like Audition or S4 league. You win based on skill, and the level is only really an indicator of how much and well you've played (S4) or if you passed a test (Audition).
