In the original Pokémon Red/Blue, when you encounter your rival in Lavender Town he asks whether or not you know what it's like to have one of your Pokémon die. At this point in the game, he no longer has the Raticate that he had used in previous battles.
The last rival encounter that involved the Raticate in question was aboard the S.S. Anne. Your rival's Raticate sustained serious injury during the battle...but because he was aboard the crowded luxury cruiseliner at the time, your rival was unable to make it to the Pokémon Center in time. The real reason your rival is in Lavender Town is to lay his Pokémon to rest.
Despite the fact that you were unknowingly responsible for the death of your rival's Pokémon, he never directly tells you about it. He hides his grief and instead channels that energy into motivating him to pursue his dream of becoming Indigo League Champion. The death of your rival's Raticate effectively destroys his childhood innocence, hardening him. Although he never actively blames you for the incident, he subconsciously holds a horrible sense of resentment towards you.
He swears on his Raticate's grave to train hard...to become better than you...to eventually make it to the hallowed halls of the Pokémon League.
Mere moments after your rival becomes champion, he is defeated...by you. He fulfilled his promise to become champion...but he was never able to become better than you. His victory is painfully brief.
In the end, your rival is scolded by Professor Oak while you receive his praise. During the course of the game, you steal your rival's innocence, his championship, his dreams, and, ultimately, the love of his own grandfather.
