Collaborate on a new standard style

Posted October 12th, 2010 at 10:10 PM by Hiroshi Sotomura

I'm considering exorcising the current vBulletin default and working on a new base "default" style that all new styles are required to be based on, basically replacing the vBulletin 3 appearance with something fresh and new. Of course, I'd work this out with existing style developers so that they know how to work with it and I don't have any reason to believe it'll be anywhere near difficult to work with.

The big ideas towards this style would be to:
  • Create a distinct, uniform appearance and break free of PC's vBulletin 3 roots.
Every one of our styles today pretty much resemble a stock vBulletin. And that's boring - we look like every other vBulletin without much customization whatsoever. Even I must admit that some styles see some cosmetic changes, but otherwise the headers are the only bits that look "overhauled" in any form.
  • Expose the features people really use.
Some features are hidden behind cumbersome menus or buried down the list. Some features we have visible are features we don't need or the members don't really use them all that often. So why not remove them, and put new ones in?
  • Make things easier to use.
vBulletin 3 is admittedly pretty straightforward. Is there much we can do to make things look much easier for everyone to work with?

I stress that this is a project that needs collaboration. This is why I'm looking for people to work with. Maybe not right now, but sometime in the future.

If you wanted, you could draw an element you think should be changed. :D

This is what I'm looking to do. Take a step away from the stock vBulletin and mix things up a little away from what vBulletin as a default looks like.

idk. Part of the reason I don't mind the base vB theme is that it's easier to theme for and everyone knows where to find everything simply because it's the standard. :( I'm fine with change to make things more accessible but being "unique" isn't necessarily a good thing. :[

I like how the vB standard layout is clean and, well I like the colour choices. I'd be happy with laying it out to be more specific to PC however, such as having a more "dedicated" navigation section around the header to blogs, new posts etc. I'd be influenced by the Wordpress style of designing though if I were to have an input I suppose. As it's clean and professional looking.

So jot me down Jake, I actually have a testing forum now o/

I suggest replacing 'user cp' with 'rekky cp'. If there's more rekky to go around everyone's happy.
