Being a moderator...

Posted May 18th, 2010 at 11:35 PM by Minior's Core

...takes practically no work at all these days. Seriously. Members report everything, all you have to do is look at it, make a decision on if it's a correct report, click the link... and lock/move/whatever.

Just reminded of this since I've been doing mod work lately after like a year and a half of not doing any.

Yeah it's good. Just makes modding less of a job, which depending on who you are is somewhere between fantastic and oh my god let me strangle people.

Yeah, but at least you won't feel like going to PC is a chore a lot of the time. You can do member things too.

    Unless you hit patches where no one reports anything. I don't think that's usually an issue in area's like ROM Hacking and such, though. xD;

Actually, in my few days of modding B/W, I've learnt that a lot of people who report actually have no idea what they are talking about. :( That and I tend to catch most stuff before they do just by browsing.

But for some reason, the people in B/W lack the common sense that people in other forums I'm used to modding have. >_< I've dealt with 2-3 spam/advertising posts in there and EVERY TIME, no one reported them--they just posted replies to it saying "this is stupid, mods come deal with it!!" fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

So modding isn't just reports. :( You've still gotta prowl the forums in your spare time.

As Erica said, not all reports are genuinely reports. I'm sure you don't see this in B/W, but some of the OC reports are entirely opinion based so that you have to think what majority opinion would be or even the lesser of two evils. I can't give an example now, but usually these are with threads that make me go 'why did you make this :|" anyway. Dealing with opinionated ticked off members who want XYZ done with a thread is still a difficult matter.

I find it ironic higher staff hasn't dealt with mod work tho :[

Don't look at me. I know for a fact that everything I've reported in B/W has been legitimate. XD

You can generally trust ex-staffers to only report things that need it. XD

Hahaha. I can't claim to have been perfect in my reporting, but usually when I report something, it's legit and breaking the rules in some way. (I'm generally right about 80% of the time)

The day you report incorrectly Timbjerr, is the day I'll spam wailord on your profile. :(

and I think the more work-part of being a moderator is keeping your section living, breathing, interesting, etc. That's the part that makes it feel like a job. (See digi-kun trying to hopelessly pump life into Jap entertainment)

'Tis a shame that maybe some 18% of DPPt/Wifi regulars actually know how to use the report button. AKA us 13374 mods get to dive into that hot mess ourselves. :3

    I miss jpp8's reports. o.O

I think a lot of members like reporting just as much as you like seeing them. Back before I was modded, and even as a mod, reporting was sooooo much fun. Makes you feel like you're making a difference, and you don't have to worry if you make a mistake -- only the mods are going to see it, anyway.

Granted, I don't get to do it very often anymore, when the forum I frequent is pretty well-modded. And when I do they're stupid anyway. :/

@Erica / Chibi: Yeah, hence the "all you have to do is look at it, make a decision on if it's a correct report, click the link." part of my post. :P

Cheeb, remember that h-staff were all moderators at one time, so of course we've all dealt with mod work (and well enough that we've been given mod powers over the entire forum, sooo, yeah. :P)

When I first joined I felt like reporting was talking to a god via a telephone line. Eh, I'm weird like that.

Reporting isn't too hard. Modding is different. Enough said. :x
