Shanghai Rants About His Thread

Posted February 27th, 2011 at 02:53 PM by Shanghai Alice

Alright, some (read: two) of you may have noticed that my thread, the Infinite Wisdom of Shanghai Alice, has been closed.

The Infinite Wisdom of Shanghai Alice (Jokingly called "The Shrine of Infinite Wisdom" or just "The Shrine" by a few (Once again, two) people) has been since June 12, 2010. Two days after I joined. So, it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to say that the thread is a large part of PC for me. Well, normally. I do go on breaks sometimes.

Anyway. The point is, I liked that thread, and it got closed.

Now, let me start this off by making two things clear: This blog post is not about overturning the ruling, and I understand why the mods have taken these actions, and I support them fully. Earlier, I was completely confused, but after discussing the matter with the moderators, I can see their logic.

They're in a really, really tough spot. And it is, by no means, a position unique to the moderators of a virtual Pokemon community.

It's a problem that plagues authority figures... Well... everywhere. The problem of Strictness and Mercy.

What I mean by that is... Well, everyone with any bit of authority, save for dictators, generally has to listen to people underneath them. This can be subordinates, citizens, siblings, or members. This means they have to listen to requests, suggestions, and complaints.

Now, unless my theory about the Robot Apocalypse is correct, because we are all human here. And with humans comes conflict. And with conflict, comes two opposing sides, with varying degrees of correctness and incorrectness on either. Or both. Whatever. It's just the way of things.

So, the person with authority listens to the complaint, and, assuming it's only a complaint, and not a criminal accusation (For example, your neighbor's lawnmower is too loud, rather than deciding who the guilty party is in a murder trial) makes a judgment call based off of how much of a [S]tyrannical jerkface[/S] [S]draconian meanie-head[/S] [S]Inspector Javert[/S] by-the-book person they are (Moderators, that was a joke. I love most of you. The ones that I don't love [S]are Netto[/S] I don't know enough yet. (Netto, that was a joke too. I really do love all the moderators as much as I can, without stepping into creepiness. Except Nica. She's probably creeped out by me.)). The judgment can either be to be lax in rule-enforcement, and let the offender off with a warning (Merciful), or to crack down and set an example, in order to deter further rule-breaking (Strict).

Yeah, yeah, so what does that mean?

Basically, it means moderators have to walk a fine line between cutting people a break, and flexing their muscle for more efficient results.

And, even more hairpullingly, there is no clear right or wrong way to do it. Sometimes, people like the guy who's a little too lax for his own good, and follow him just because they like him. Sometimes laxness breeds anarchy. Sometimes, people appreciate the strict moderator doing his job. Sometimes they hate him.

There's no right or wrong way to do it. I do not, and cannot, fault the moderators.

However.

However, however, however.

I can fault the person who made the ruling necessary.

See, a while back (Well, not that long...), there was a thread closed for being aimed at one person, not promoting enough discussion, and, in my opinion, for being sorta bland.

Fair enough. The mods have a point. However, that's the DL-6 case, and the subject of this blog post (Aside from my earlier and irrelevant rant on moderators) is the murder of Hammond. If you don't understand that... Well, the point is, that thread laid the groundwork for the ruling on my thread.

Because, apparently, someone thought it would be funny to accuse the moderators of bias, for not closing my thread.

This is after the moderators acknowledged (And, therefore, legitimized) my thread a while back. Which is what made this issue so sticky.

But, yes. My thread was closed in a poor attempt at trolling (Well, okay, so maybe this blog post proves it wasn't so poor).

Am I going to seek revenge? No.
Am I going to hold a grudge? No.
Will I be doing the guy any favors? No.

Kudos, troll.

Okay, okay, I'm done. I won't discuss it anymore, I just needed to ramble on for cathartic purposes.

Yours,
Shanghai Alice

So what's this about again? That if you have an issue with a mod's decision to just ask them? ._.

    Shanghai is venting.

We shall now mourn the loss of the wonderfully random thread, just as we mourned the loss of the Nightclub some months ago.

Trying to express discontent with the situation but acknowledging the ruling has merit?

Mmmh I sympathize with you. :/

Right now, yeah, I'm not happy with the mods of OT. It feels like they're being too strict. But you watch...the irony seldom strikes when the irons are hot.

But yeah, all one can do is express their discontent and hope the higher powers learn something from it. :/

I hate that so much sometimes, but at least it makes better sense than causing more trouble than it's worth.

Are you joking? I'm about to march into O.T. with an army, and mess stuff up for the sake of messing stuff up.

    CHAAAAAAAAAAARGE!

Okay, not really. Too busy being swamped with school.
