I've been listening to this song all day long for quite a while now and I'm convinced it is perhaps one of my favorite songs ever.
It's called A Change of Seasons by the progressive metal band Dream Theater. Don't let the length of the song or the "metal" tag dissuade you; it's a brilliantly crafted piece of musicianship and among the best songs the band has ever written.
The song is a 23-minute long epic split into seven parts, three of which are insturmentals: The Crimson Sunrise, Innocence, Carpe Diem, The Darkest of Winters, Another World, The Inevitable Summer, The Crimson Sunset. I've included an explanation behind each part in the following spoiler:
I'm not normally a person who pays much attention to lyrics; I'm more of an instrumental-oriented listener, I consider vocals of any kind (be they singing to screaming to death growling) to be just another 'instrument', with lyrics being part of the notes. But these lyrics are some of the most beautiful, relating, and moving I have ever read and James LaBrie really brings them to life. Here they are in this spoiler tag, in case you feel like reading along with the song (should you have the courage and patience to listen to the entire thing):
Dream Theater is a truly amazing band and I recommend them greatly to anyone looking for some cool sounding prog-rock/metal. Even if you aren't into rock/metal, I still recommend giving these guys a listen or two. Here are some recommendations.
Album I highly recommend: Images & Words, Awake, and Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory
If you want song recommendations other than this one, try Pull Me Under, Metropolis Pt 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper, Caught in a Web, Innocence Faded, The Mirror, Overture 1924, Strange Deja Vu, Through Her Eyes, Home, Dance of Eternity, The Glass Prison, Blind Faith, The Great Debate, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, As I Am, Panic Attack, Sacrificed Sons, Forsaken, Constant Motion.

Eh, the first several minutes or so are boring, then it gets to the good stuff.Quote:
I especially love at the end where James LaBrie is just shouting "TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUM" as loud as he possibly can.Posted January 15th, 2013 at 07:23 PM by CarcharOdin
