In light of purchasing White 2 recently, I decided I'd log my progress thus far and share it with you guys. Heh. Better late than never, right? Since I've already elaborated on my game details, I'm just going to focus on my opinion of the game so far. Pokémon White left a bittersweet taste in my mouth and it honestly didn't leave a good impression of Gen V for me as a whole. Like, of all the generations, Gen V would probably be at the bottom of the list. However, however, White 2 is proving to be a vast improvement over Black and White and slowly changing my view of Gen V as I go along.
For one example, after you got through the introduction, Hugh turned out to be a pretty great rival. I like that he has this deep trouble with Pokémon abandonment and is determined to take down Team Plasma. I don't know how much further this will be ventured into for Hugh, but I hope it continues. Character development in a Pokémon game is always welcome, even in the most minor ways. (Side note: I love the Habitat extension for the PokéDex. Love it sooo much!)
The only two minor complaints I have are the seemingly excessive tutorials ─ seriously, is it me or are there more tutorials in these games than ever before? ─ and the PokéStar Studios. Actually, I don't really have anything against the latter; I like it. My only nitpick is that it's such a large area for something so... insignificant to the overall game. Also, Mr. Stu Deeoh? That's some real creative juice you got going there, GameFreak, dahling.
Oh, and if you're wondering why I haven't evolved my Tepig yet, there's a simple explanation for that: The less time I spend having a Pignite on my team the better. I had originally planned to ditch my starter at the beginning, but Tepig was just so darn cute ("D'aaaaw") that I decided to keep him. It's also the first time I'm using a Tepig in the game. In White, I always chose Oshawott while at one point I decided to go with Snivy.
tl;dr version, As you can see I'm not very far in the game right now. I don't have all that much to say about it other than I'm really enjoying it!
By the way, feel free to give me your opinions on the B2W2 and what you thought of it compared to Black and White.

I agree in that the tutorial heavy beginning just sucks. When you look back on Pokemon games, have you noticed even the first games in the series didn't have a tutorial really at all? It had one, but it was optional (I believe the old man is optional anyway). And even if it's not and my memory has failed me, at least it's short. The game doesn't tell you much after that. Gen II, we had an optional tutorial and a tour of a small town. Not bad, informative enough, and I think they hit the nail on the head with the tutorials that gen. Enough to tell you what to do, simple, and short. RSE didn't really give you anything either, unless you count Wally, but it was integrated so well that I didn't even realize that it was technically a tutorial. Clever, gen III! Clever!! And FRLG gave us the optional Teachy TV, which I thought was perfect. It's optional and has plenty of, well, options! Bring this back! Gen IV is where the tutorials started to get a bit hectic, but not as bad as BW was.
I could go on, but I think you get it. It seems like they thought fans got stupider the further we went into the series? And I honestly feel that more older fans play the games than newer fans, so the majority of people buying Pokemon games already know how to do it, so why isn't this stuff optional? And for those of us that have been in the franchise since Red and Blue, if we could figure it out back then without tutorials, and as kids most of us, why can't kids do that now with Black and White? Did Pokemon REALLY change that much or get that complicated? No. I don't think so. If anything, it's easier to tells things apart in gen V than things in gen I, with the new colors and textures and tiles and all that sort of stuff.
Sorry I'm rambling about tutorials, but that really is my main problem with BW2, though I think it was worse in BW. Other than that, I really like the game and I think the difficulty curve is spot on! You're gonna have fun, Shivi! :3Posted February 23rd, 2013 at 05:24 AM by Sydian
