Big Problem With No Solution!
Posted March 8th, 2013 at 05:18 AM by Alexial357
Okay, so I need the collective insight of the Pokecommunity to help me with this decision!
..I'm looking for an anime to watch.
Yes, yes I know, you don't need to tell me. But you have to understand, I spend a lot of time drawing anime (westernized, yes, but regardless!) and I realized that I don't actually watch any. u_u; Let me give you guys a run down of what I've already done. I read Violinist of Hameln, which is pretty good if you're looking for a quick and easy read without too much character development. And I watched Serial Experiments Lain.. which I really, really liked. Cowboy Bebop and FLCL were pretty cool as well. Afterwards, I tried picking up a few things that I just can't get into, no mater how hard I tried. I'm now watching the Rurouni Kenshin (or however it's spelled) series because I was already somewhat familiar with the Samurai X movies.. and it's not so bad. But, I'm looking for something I can really sink my teeth into.
I'm not a big fan of stories that are super... "magical", for lack of better term. I'm not into demons, or witches, or vampires, or whatever the Japanese equivalent to those things are. That being said, I'm a huge fan of True Blood and Game of Thrones, so I'm not completely closed off to the idea if the story is just that good. I can also say with some confidence that I won't like anything that takes place, for the most part, in a school. ;( I left high school like six years ago, I'd rather not revisit it in any way. But that's where you guys come in!
I'm sorry guys, I know I'm asking for your help than telling you everything I don't like. I just want a good, solid anime I can get into with little commitment. Something gritty and based in.. at least partial reality (and please don't recommend anything that was on Adult Swim or whatever).
I hate to say it, but at the end of the day, anime may just not be for me. And I'm wiling to accept that as an option. But I'd still like to be proven wrong! So let me know what you all think! Please and thanks! <3;
And Dero, I'm sorry because I know you're going to say One Piece but I already know I'm going to like it and I want to have a small list of things I can watch in the meantime! ;(

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Death Note
Code Geass R1 & R2.
These are some of the best anime I've seen. And I'm cent percent sure that I can recommend these to ANYONE without even thinking twice about it. They're good in all aspects. Story is their forte, though. But yeah, brotherhood is the latest of the three so it has some awesome as hell animation to boot. Definitely watch them. Then there's another which is one of my personal favorites besides One Piece - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. But it is a little too much. Definitely not something based on reality, lol.
This is completely off-topic but you should at least watch these openings. They're SOOO good. <33; Who knows, you might be tempted to watch the shows if you watch these. :p

And last but not the least, watch ONE PIECE, dammit! You HAVE to. >UPosted March 8th, 2013 at 06:03 AM by Derozio

Also FLCL was done by the same people who did TTGL. And TTGL is considered one of their masterpieces. Though admittedly, it doesn't pick up and goes all epic until after like 7-8 episodes, but yeah, from what I've seen over the internet, TTGL is considered a better piece of work from the same studio when compared to FLCL.Posted March 8th, 2013 at 06:09 AM by Derozio

Steins;Gate is great sci-fi.
Having trouble thinking of others because even looking through my list of anime I've watched, SO MUCH of it is fantasy/not reality based. Fate/Zero I would consider "gritty", it's set in reality, but reality plus a great deal of magic. Kind of like HP in a way - set in a world just like ours, except there is magic that's hidden from people that don't know about it.Posted March 8th, 2013 at 06:14 AM by Toujours

Wooo, thanks everyone! Please feel free to suggest more but as it stands, here's my list :
One Piece (TTGL)
FMAB
Steins;Gate (just looked up the game-- not the show yet)
Angel Beats
Okay, now for the sad part. I've already tied Death Note, Samurai Champloo, Bleach, FMA (Not Brotherhood-- but I'm willing to try it since it's different I guess), Code Geass, that Durarara show... and.. Well they were all very hit and miss for me. ;( But, no harm in taking a second look, right?
Keep 'em coming if you got anymore! And thanks so much to everyone who's contributed! :3Posted March 8th, 2013 at 07:20 PM by Alexial357

You didn't like Death Note and Code Geass? D: Well, FMA:B is pretty different from FMA buut..I don't know, what exactly did you dislike from the first anime? I mean, not much changes in universe apart from some characters and the story itself. The basic stuff that they do, alchemy, and how they do it remains the same. That goes without saying but yeah. If you disliked the story, the characters and the pacing though, FMAB might win you over.
Also Bleach sucks. I don't even consider it in the same league as FMA, Death Note or Code Geass. :p But yeah, definitely give TTGL a shot. Why the bracket, though? Because both were suggested by your dufus partner Dero, is it? lolPosted March 8th, 2013 at 07:41 PM by Derozio

@ Dero : It's not that I didn't like them.. I just.. Found myself not paying too much attention or caring very much. Which is definitely more my fault than it is the show's. My point was to get some new recommendations so I didn't have to go back and try again, but if those animes come that highly suggested, than they have to be good, right? :3
@ Kura : Ohhh, no, no hun. I've got much bigger problems... but this is one that PC can solve for me. ;) lmaoPosted March 9th, 2013 at 12:14 AM by Alexial357

I know some of the suggestions in there are already on your list but I find the vid a good one nonetheless. I think you should check it out. Though ignore what he says about Bleach - it is a bad anime, in my opinion. It starts of really strong with a really good arc (I remember being blown away by some of the epic moments in soul society) but then...things start getting bad. Really bad. Mostly because it starts having TONS of fillers and the arcs after the first one are easily worse in comparison.Posted March 9th, 2013 at 05:16 PM by Derozio

And YES, you should give them a shot again. Those anime are few of those which can be recommended to anybody and I'm sure you'll enjoy them if you do pay attention, lol.
Also, the video above...I don't really mean to call you a 'beginner' at anime or whatever. Posted that just because the guy makes some really good suggestions. :3Posted March 9th, 2013 at 08:12 PM by Derozio
