The Last Day of Bliss

Posted July 8th, 2013 at 07:27 AM by Dakota

Bliss meaning food! Yeah, tomorrow's the start of Ramadan for my place (most likely anyway). For those who don't know, Ramadan's a month long fasting session, where you're not allowed to eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset. I've done all 30 days for about 4 or 5 years now, if not more, so that's not a big issue.

There is two things that sucks about this though. One, Ramadan's in early/mid summer this time. Meaning the time from sunrise to sunset would be soooo much more than, say, the first day of winter. The heat also sucks, which leads to thing two! Two, it's dangerous to go outside/hang out with friends. Cause in this heat, getting dehydrated is really easy if you aren't allowed to drink water. Add the fact the my friends and I are trying to hang out as much as possible before we part ways for college (:'() and we've got a big issue, imo. I'm still gonna try to hang out, but it's not gonna be easy for me. And it's easy for my buddies, since they don't do it =P

Since it starts tomorrow, I'm gonna hang out and eat! with my friends today, so yeah, that's it for me today. Sorry Skype buddies, as much as I love all of you, I love my IRL friends more. D; But you're in good hands with the rest of the Cafe staff. =D

Ramadan's gonna be loads of fun. Insert sarcastic comment here.

It baffles me how people can fast honestly. I mean, I understand the purpose for it and such, I'm not knocking that, but just...idk, I couldn't do it myself really, lol. It sounds...painful idk.

Yeah, that's odd. I haven't ever actually fasted myself, but I know that when Christians fast they can at least have water. Didn't realize Islam was so strict.

I second what Kura said. Just become nocturnal. :P

Nope, water is just as bad as soda during Ramadan. :c

And thanks for the well wishes. I think I might just become nocturnal, just to survive. =P

Oh, and Syd. You get used to it after 5 years. You should try it one day. =D And then try playing soccer while doing it! Whoo!

EDIT: LOL. So this is all based of the moon, and Ramadan starts the day after tomorrow, they just announced it. I'm done.

well, historically the Prophet and his followers were in the desert, so poor people, in addition to not being able to buy clothes and eat and all that we see in stereotypical homeless people, they also couldn't get water because they were 1) too poor or 2) too ashamed.

So when he created Ramadan, he wanted everyone to know how sucky it is to be poor, so he said no food or water because that's how poor people lived in the desert c:

Here in Europe and America we have plenty of water, so when they said to emulate poor people they didn't really consider the water thing :p

The only thing I'm concerned about.. doesn't not having water seriously harm the body?
People can die from dehydration, constipation, migraines, the metabolic system slows, etc.

It is interesting that this practice is still in place to this extent. A bit surprising to me, though. Why exactly do you do it? Is it for the reason droomph says? Like to feel poor/ humble?

only after 3-5 days; ramadan requires their participants to not eat or drink while the sun is up, basically.

What droomph said. So in the summer, that's about 14 hours. The winter, it's probably not even 10. It also helps that you're supposed to pig out before the sun rises, and then turn into a water balloon with all the water you drink.

    Or maybe that's just me.

As for why I do, it, I'll be 100% honest. It's a great time to work out. The lack of food intake helps, imo.

Isn't the lack of protein uptake throughout the day going to take their toll on your muscles if you work them out? Cuz working out involves muscle damage, and if you can't repair that with amino acids from the bloodstream, then they're going to have to come from somewhere :\

Yeah though fasting can be a good way to cleanse the body, it isn't a good idea to work out when fasting because the muscle will just eat itself, really, if you don't have the proper nutrition. So actually.. it's not good for working out. To keep your metabolism going you should actually be eating many small meals instead of a few big ones, but with Ramadan, that can't be helped. I'd say you should resume your workout routine after Ramadan rather than during it. Or work out just before the sun goes down and then have a lot of protein to help speed the muscle recovery process.

That's why I was concerned about the water, because.. well not drinking water is like not oiling your car. It's concerning to me on hot summer days. But if you play it safe, I guess it wont be too bad. I just don't see what's so beneficial about doing it to this extreme but it's for religious purposes, and I can respect that.
