God help Australia

Posted September 7th, 2013 at 06:28 AM by curiousnathan

Today marks the end of the federal election in Australia, and with it comes the announcement of our Prime Minister: Tony Abbott. Needless to say, I'm absolutely pissed that he's won. In news he will give new mothers a ridiculous sum of $75,000, I bid Australian households and parents well in ensuring their children receive a quality education, because school and university fees are going to skyrocket. Not to mention, we can stamp out marriage equality for almost good now that this fool has taken over. I also forgot to mention that our internet connection and speed will undergo a massive degrade.

The one thing I do know however, is that our roads will get showered with cash and smothered will a fresh coating of tar, while we release more harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. Because you know, who gives a **** about the well-being of our planet, right?

In response to these recent events, I've decided I'm going to get the **** out of this country and move somewhere fresh! My options are to move to the United Kingdom, Italy or Canada. Help me choose, because right now I sure don't want to live here!

R.I.P Australia

You shall never leave the land down under, PC staff needs its Australian presence. But yeah I do admit my family heavily supported Abbott this election so no surprise.

My recommendation? Unless you can speak Italian fluently, don't go to Italy. If you like cold temperatures, then Canada's the way to go, otherwise, the U.K. will be your cup of tea.

Canada's nice, ish I'd imagine our internet speeds suck here because of a telecom oligopoly, but if you go to school just leech leech leech.

Seems a bit of a kneejerk reaction, imho. Let him have a go and we'll see how much he'll ruin things first, then we can call him bad. =p

Marriage equality wouldn't have happened under rudd either as it'd end up being the same result under Gillard - they have a vote, majority of Labor members would have said no again, and that'd have been the end.
    A few other points:

They already have in the last few years though! Unis have gotten a cut of funding this year from - guess who - Labor. The pay-upfront HECS discount is gone too. When I started uni four years ago you got 20% off if you paid upfront. Last two years it dwindled down to 10% and is going to be 0% next year iirc. That's Labor's doing. That, and the Liberals have supported the same plans Labor has in future reforms (the Gonski sort). That's a matter we'll have to wait and see on, but my point is - it already sucks!

Except the parts already implemented will remain and we're still getting an upgrade, just a more cost effective one from my understanding. On that note, my area should have already had the NBN in place and... well, my internet still sucks. If this gets things actually happening with some increase, it may not be so bad. I'd rather a medium upgrade that can be improved down the track in a few years then a more expensive great upgrade in 10 years, to put it that way.

Quick google search gives me ''...Coalition's proposed scheme, which would offer women their full salary for 26 weeks (capped at $75,000, or $150,000 per year).' http://www.smartcompany.com.au/industrial-relations/055466-how-does-australia-compare-when-it-comes-to-paid-maternity-leave.html

Ie, they only get that much if they already earn that much. If they do not, then they won't get said money. And I don't think all that many working mothers are at that sort of salary. Not that I think it's that bad an idea either, to allow women to be able to have a child and still have income and be able to keep working...

In short, both sides suck, but hey, let's give the new guy a go first. Maybe at least we'll have less national debt. Claiming you need to move though straight away...well, that just seems a bit silly to me. Last time the liberals were in power nothing exploded. =p

Oh, and FYI, Abbott was a Rhode Scholar. I doubt you can call him a 'fool'. But I guess I just dislike mud slinging of both sides. =/

    EDIT:

...have any source of that? I recall reading them strongly denying they would support any sort of filter as of two days ago.

I was exaggerating on purpose, Marcin. Of course I'm not going to move. =p I definitely agree with you on a few points there, though.
