It's easily my most prized Pokemon.
Introduction
As I said in the other blog entry, I spent about two months doing this due to boredom.I feel satisfied with the turnout but I also feel like I wasted a great deal of time. I can't remember why I chose to challenge my self in this way. Latios was chosen as I knew it was an event Pokemon I could abuse the RNG easily with.
Accessing Southern Island
To make the Latios even more unique, I decided to obtain it from a Japanese Emerald game. I'd previously finished it with no trouble so all I had to do was gain access to the exclusive Southern Island. I did this by mixing records with my Sapphire version to transfer the ticket over.
Catching Latios
Now with access to Southern Island, I had to get a Latios that was reasonable for competitive battling. Of course, Timid was my choice as speed is everything the the current metagames and Latios' Attack stat would be unneeded. I followed a guide on RNG abuse. Previously my only experience with RNG was a simple test in obtaining a shiny Spinarak in Platinum but that's besides the point. I got my lovely Timid Latios with an IV spread of 31/7/31/31/31/31 (HP/Atk/Def/SpA/SpD/Spe) without much trouble.
I then traded Latios to Sapphire because I prefer to play the game in English.
Maximising the Contest Stats
My next goal was the maximising of the Contest Stats which also ensured the Contests to be as easy as possible. Luckily, I'd seen a YouTube video of some crazy Japanese guy who had recipes for maximising the Contest Stats of Pokemon through the use of Pokéblock.
This was one of the more tedious processes I had to go through. I managed to convince three of my friends to assist me with the mixing of the Pokéblock. It took a few hours to get things right. There was a lot of yelling that day. Haha.
I'm going to go ahead and admit that I cheated to get the Apicot (#40) and the Petaya (#39) berries. Those two were inaccessible outside of Japan so unless I knew someone who'd attended the events that had the Berries, I would have faced a dead end if the miracle of Visual Boy Advance didn't exist. I don't actually own any cheating devices so I had to backup my save file, edit it then restore it into the cartridge again. I had #36 from Mirage Island and #37 and #38 from the numerous Channel Jirachi I'd received from my copy of Pokemon Channel.
After all the trouble I now had a Timid Latios with perfect Contest Stats. Amazing.
Collecting the Ribbons
All I had to do now was to collect the Ribbons. I did a bit of research before starting and figured out that there'd be 65 Ribbons in total. See the other blog entry for the whole list. Being the insane maniac I am, I strove to gather all of them.
The Normal and the Super ranks were breezes with my buffed Latios with the appropriate Scarf I'd obtained from the Pokémon Fan Club President. I merely had to alternate between any moves disregarding the category and end the final move with Momento. Hyper Rank was slightly more challenging but small changes in the moveset took care of that. Master Rank was also the same but I occasionally lucked out and had to try a multitude number of times before succeeding. With the winning of a Master Rank came the Artist Ribbon (21).
My next challenge was the Winning Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon. Unfortunately I have OCD and I wanted to Pal Park Latios over at the level I met it at. To maximise my chances at winning I used 10 Calcium and 10 Carbos. It was probably unneeded as Latios was already so powerful without any EVs invested. I gathered the two Ribbons with ease (23). Time-wise, they took a while though.
I defeated the Hoenn Champion and collected my Champion Ribbon (24) before proceeding to trade Latios over to Pokemon XD. There was only one to earn in the game; the Earth Ribbon. I had to win 100 matches in a row in order to claim it. I can't remember the exact team I used but I pulled it off on the first try (25).
Of course I'd left the Effort Ribbon but as mentioned I didn't really want to bother with EVs until after sending it over via Pal Park. The same Ribbon was available in the DS games too so it wasn't a bother. I traded back to Sapphire and proceeded to send it via Pal Park to Diamond.
Winning the Contests was almost the same as the GBA games. I'd earned myself another 20 Ribbons (45).
I obtained another 7 just from getting the daily Ribbon from Sunyshore City (52), 3 from the Resort Area Ribbon Club (55) and 1 from beating the Sinnoh Champion (56).
Finally I EV trained Latios appropriately; 4/0/0/252/0/252 and collected the Effort Ribbon (57). By then, my Latios had already taken a liking to me so I also got the Footprint Ribbon (58).
I still had the Battle Tower Ribbons to earn and all my competitive Pokemon were in HeartGold so I then proceeded to trade Latios over.
I've never enjoyed the Battler Towers (or should I say the Hax Towers) of any region and this was no different. The Ability Ribbon (59) was easy to obtain. The Great Ability Ribbon (60) was the same with a little more progression. Earning the Double Ability Ribbon (61) required a bit of strategy but it was manageable. The Multi Ability Ribbon (62) was ridiculously annoying to get. It wasn't too hard but I had to restart at least four times because my partner was stupid and didn't know how to play. As for the Pair Ability Ribbon (63), I partnered up with my Platinum version. It wasn't fun but I succeeded... eventually. The World Ability Ribbon (64) was a pain to get. I can't remember how to win exactly as I earned the Ribbon after playing for a few days unexpectedly.
Finally, I defeated Red satisfyingly to earn the final Ribbon; the Legend Ribbon (65).
And there you have it. You've now read how I wasted two months of my life.
EDIT: The IVs aren't actually what I originally thought they were. Fudge. That's what happens when you don't log your processes.
It's easily my most prized Pokemon.
