Since I bought my laptop back in May, my desktop computer I've been using for close to five years now has been sitting around doing nothing. I kind of wanted to keep it as a backup computer, but my laptop is doing well. If something happens to it it's still under warranty, and my roommate has two computers himself, so I can just borrow one of his until I get mine fixed. And if worse comes to worse I can always scrape together money for a reaaaaaally cheap desktop system in a few months.
My parents haven't been doing so well financially now compared to the past. They've had the same Dell computer since about... 2003, 2004, maybe? It's not quite ten years old, but it's getting there. They desperately need a new system but they can't afford it. So since my desktop isn't being used, I'm going to send it down to them when I see them this Saturday/Sunday. A almost 5 year old system isn't exactly an upgrade, but it still has better specs and it'll tide them over until they can afford a newer computer.
I've got a lot of fond memories of my desktop. My parents bought it for me for my high school graduation. It was the first computer that was truly mine. It's been to Germany, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Kansas. Can't count the amount of times I've had to pack it up to ship it around. It'll be surreal to pack it for one last time.
SPECS:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU @3.00GHz (single core, oh noes)
2.49GB RAM (originally just 1GB, upgraded later on)
226GB harddrive
Intergrated graphics
CD/DVD burner that's currently busted; my sister should be bringing another one.
Netgear Wireless card
Running Windows Vista. Vista was brand-new when this computer came out!
It's on it's third install of Vista; decided to start fresh for my parents. I am going to be updating this thing all night. It found 108 updates. I don't even think that includes the service packs. Depending on how long these updates take I might just do that tomorrow. :(
They're not getting the monitor they bought with it, though. It's miiiine. They already have one and I like my dual monitor setup. >:) Besides they'll get a better screen resolution with their old one; mine only goes up to 1024x768. Ooooh the fit I threw when I found that out. I was such an ungrateful child.
