Or, as I call it, one of the best fanfics ever written.
Of course, Your Mileage May Vary, but... Well, let me just launch into a loving tirade.
See, a few months ago, I was bored. As always, I used TVTropesp (WARNING: TVTropes Will Ruin Your Life!) to find some good fanfiction to kill time.
I didn't find good fanfiction, though.
I found Imperfect Metamorphosis, the best fanfiction I've ever read. At 30 chapters, and still going, it is full of awesome (being a Touhou fic), hilarity, drama, and a lot of dark, HSQ-breaking moments.
Yes, it's a darkfic. And it pulls it off wonderfully, while maintaining a balance of... well, everything. One chapter will have you laughing, gasping in horror, sympathizing with a character, whooping as the characters rain down enough firepower to level Detroit*, and then gasping as the enemy pulls another card.
Also, there's the writing. TakerFoxx, the author, is an amazing writer. Unlike UsuallyDead, another prominent Touhou writer, he prefers a more casual, realistic style, choosing to portray each character as, well, realistic. Each character has their flaws, their motivations, their hatreds, and their pasts. Much like reality, there are no blacks or whites (Or, in UD's work, grays and Yuyuko). Everyone's gray, ranging from Yukari, who doesn't bat an eye as she coerces people into nearly dying for her to save Gensokyo, to Yuuka, who massacres entire villages for kicks, but will go to any lengths to uphold her personal code, and punish anyone who she deems as despicable.
The battles are amazingly well written, as Taker uses story elements perfectly, knowing when to add in a nice touch of dramatic weather without going overboard or cliche. His dialogue is amazing, with every chapter having a dozen (if not more) quotable lines. And, overall, he does an amazing job at portraying the characters.
Of course, he also alters canon to suit his own needs, but this does not impact the work negatively in any way, shape, or form.
All-in-all, he perfectly describes the "World of Superpowered Girls" concept very well, always keeping it highly entertaining and suspenseful.
And did I mention the villain is... Well, no. Read for yourself.
It's a long story (I had to read 24 chapters to catch up), but... it's worth it. It will hook you in, and refuse to let go, so long as you let it hook you in.
Please read it. It needs to be read. It's one of those stories that's screaming to be heard.
I really hope TakerFoxx becomes a novelist. I'd buy anything of his in a heartbeat.
Also, on an unrelated note, he's a really nice guy. But that's besides the point.
