First off, this isn't meant to be disrespectful, so don't take anything the wrong way. Secondly, I was an honours student in the subject of Religion (including philosophy, meta-physics, religious and global diversity, and theology) for 6 years, with consistent high grades (down to interest). I'm saying that so that you don't feel my views are completely uneducated.
If anyone needs a term for what best suits my beliefs; Secular. I believe that religion is something people may freely practice, but I do not believe that it should come into law in any way, sense or form. Whether lifestyle or hobby, I believe that religion and religious people should have the same rights as anybody else, and not set their own standards. Now, in saying that, I believe that certain religions hold some fantastic values in which we see in our constitution, but you must understand that as I am non-religious, I believe these standards came from the mouths of human beings as opposed to deities.
I believe that people's activities, actions and decisions should be unbiased by religion influence. Especially in the area of politics.It's pretty much the separation of religion and governmental society. Don't take this the wrong way when I say it; but I feel that religion should be practiced in the same way one would practice yoga, meaning peacefully and not something one pushes in the face of society. It's common knowledge that there are religious extremists out there and even some fanatics who push their religion to far. Those who do actually practice their religion as their sacred texts intend them to, seem to understand the concept of peace and ecumenism.
I personally feel that "religion" does not exist. Not quite to the sense where I'm becoming like Friedrich Nitschke, and claiming that "God is dead". However I feel that religion is a silly word for "belief". If I were to ask you "What is religion?", I guarantee you that you could not answer it without having to google a suitable answer. To save you the trouble, the primary definition is whereby there is a belief in a higher being or deity. Which to me, is a silly way to umbrella a group of beliefs. There are a lot of "religions" in which do not actually follow a God, but are regarded as such. This is why I feel that Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Scientology, and other major world religion and every possible denomination are simply a "belief".
Pass off what you believe in as a "religion", and not a belief and you're already marketing yourself to be opposition. I feel that if people were seen to believe in different things, and not to be a part of a different "religion", that there would be a lot less conflict surrounding it all.
I believe in the freedom of belief, in every shape. I do not believe in "religion". I think that everyone deserves to practice their beliefs within the law. The most cruel thing I am going to say is that what is defined as "religion" has a place on the dinner table, within communities, and among other believers, but it does not belong in our courts, nor should it ever become the justification for any wrong doing.
