I definitely need a new DS

So the DS I got now is this red DS Phat seen here:

Spoiler:

Apparently it's a special "hot rod red" DS bundled with Mario Kart DS. I'm not sure how much exactly it was, but I got it used for about 70/80 dollar at GameStop back in 2010. My dad got ti for me so I could have something to do while on our vacation in Atlanta. With all of the time it's been played with from me and the original/previous owner, it's definitely being worn down and that's becoming apparent to me now. There's times where it won't reading the DS card even when it's obviously in the card slot. Sometimes a game, particularly my Platinum, it would say " can't access save data" or something like that and I would take several resets to get the came to play. The touch screen has also been faulty lately. The bottom part doesn't calibrate or respond except in the bottom corners. I 'm getting slightly annoyed by these problems so I'm thinking it's time to get a new DS.

I was thinking a DSi or a DSi XL.. I just want something I can use for playing DS games and so I can trade/transfer Pokemon over from other games or battle with my brother if he wants. I'm also get a 3DS or 3DS XL for X and Y so I know I can just play DS games on it. But I've heard the quality on DS games on 3DS isn't the best and that communication between the DS and 3DS isn't great. I don't need a system for GBA games cause I already got both my original DS and GBA SP for that. So a DSI or DSi XL works the best for me.

Just something I thought I share. Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions/or anything else? Also any game recommendations for DS or 3DS? I've been wanting play more games besides Pokemon cause they're one of the few series I actually play.

Get a 3DS -- even a used one. Don't get a DSi -- they have horrible rendering of DS games imo :/

I heard the 3DS doesn't render DS games too well either. So if anything I'd get a DSI XL or 3DS XL

Can i still trade./transfer Pokemon with a 3DS and a DS? Cause that's my main reason for getting another DS. A DS Lite is another option I guess even if I don't need a GBA slot.

It doesn't emulate it perfectly, but it's still playable, at least.

And yes, you can communicate with DSs. The settings are in a bit different of places if you're using Wi-Fi, but they have the same layout so it shouldn't be that hard to get connected.

I guess that infrared/wireless (by that i mean two system directly in front of each other obviously) communication works too. I was thinking of an 3DS XL for the bigger screen and better battery. I know it's more expensive but I don't mind.

OR a DSi XL cause it's cheaper used. Though price , again don't matter too much. I'm used to the bulky size of the DS Phat anyways so the XLs feel good/better to me I guess.

If you want to play a DS game on a 3DS, hold L and R when you open it, and it'll use the same resolution it does on a DS, so things appear as they should. Save money and just get a 3DS. You'll be getting one anyway. Why would you even consider getting both? :/

It's actually Select + Start. Starts DS games in their native resolution, which is really small on a large DS screen imo.
