One of my side goals for 2015 was to attend as many conventions as possible. I wasn't sure if my hectic life would permit me to do so, but it seems like it could be happening. I made that goal when I went to San Diego Comic-Con last year (and only went to the outskirts of it). Honestly, I wouldn't really count that as my "first" convention, because I didn't go INSIDE. I actually lost my "convention virginity" to Anime Matsuri.
Surely, San Diego Comic-Con seems to be impossible to get badges from (and now it's really pointless because I'm no longer in Cali). So I'm looking at other options (local options, that is). Houston, being one the largest cities in the US, actually has a handful of cons every year. One of them, Anime Matsuri, which is a convention focused heavily on Asian culture and pop culture, went on this past weekend. I wasn't even planning to go to said convention, not because I wasn't interested, mainly because I couldn't really afford to go. On Saturday when I met up with my Houston Brony friends at UHouston, one of them gave me an extra Sunday badge so I could go with them on Easter Sunday. I felt absolutely blessed that she gifted me access. I also couldn't believe it! So it turned out that I actually had plans for Sunday.
Anime Matsuri was super amazing, especially as it was the first convention I actually attended (and went inside!), Me and my friends had a blast visiting panels, walking through artists' alley, and meeting up with Japanese filmmakers who were promoting the latest Anime movies. So many Pokemon plushies were being sold too. I even found a MEGANIUM plushie that was being sold there. The price? $40. It wasn't even customized or anything. It was small and he wanted $40. That would have killed my budget greatly. But no matter, I will find one, eventually!
I'm so amazed that Anime Matsuri is not the only anime/Japanese con out there. There are hundreds out there, like DeltaHCon, and a few in San Antonio (which is a 2 hour drive, I'd go for that). I'm also amazed that Houston has more than one Comic-Con. There's Comicpalooza, which I actually have plans on attending, and there's also Amazing Comic-Con. Both cons will actually happen in the summer, the latter on Labor Day Weekend. Aside from that, Fiesta Equestria, Houston's MLP Brony-Con, will also happen in the summer, and it's one con I cannot miss (and my Houston Brony friends are counting on me to be there! xD).
