Veggie man

Posted October 12th, 2013 at 04:51 PM by Dakota

This is something I've been thinking a lot about, lately, and after recent events, I've finally decided to make a decision.

A while ago, I blogged about my fear that I'd have to sacrifice an animal to god. I'm not going to repeat myself, so just find that blog if you're wondering what I'm talking about. My point is, since then, and I guess a little before then, I've been thinking to myself how unfair it is for animals to be slaughtered, in the name of whatever, be it religion or survival. Don't give me a bunch of that survival of the fittest bull, cause people have the ability to be able to decide what they want to eat. I wouldn't be posting this blog if I didn't.

I'll be the first to admit that I do like eating meat. I never thought about where it came from, who had to suffer, etc etc. It was just eat and feel good. But these past few events have just made me rethink everything and feel less and less pleased about the dark story behind the chicken on my plate. The kicker came when I met my girlfriend, who's also a vegetarian. I'd only recently realized what it meant to be a meat eater, I hadn't ever really gotten a personal contact from someone who's vegetarian until I'd met her. And I'll admit, it's something I admire about her.

So I was thinking last night, long and hard, and I was talking to her, and I decided: I'm going to try to become a vegetarian.

She told me that it's not something that'll be easy for me, at all, considering my whole family isn't vegetarian (unlike hers). I figured at least my mother would support me, but I just found out that she's against it. "Your father and I aren't vegetarian, so why should you be?" I'll admit, that got me seriously mad, cause I'd expected my parents to support me, but I was wrong. So I guess that means I'll have to play it my own way. Meh. Might as well take this as an incentive to learn how to cook stuff.

I haven't eaten meat all day. =) I know, I know, one day, big accomplishment, insert sarcasm here. But I really truly hope that I can turn one day into one week, one week into one month, and one month into one year and beyond. I know this is a big life decision, and I have a habit of thinking before I act. But I also have a habit of making sure **** gets done if I'm serious about it.

Any help from you guys would truly mean the world to me. I know PC has a few vegetarians, so if you guys can give me tips and hints, that'd be amazing.

Wish me luck <3

I think some of us meat lovers truly do relish in the domination of the animals we're eating and the triumph of some over others. So we might live in different worlds. I have a friend who's vegetarian (who happens to be brown by the way) but is also interestingly doing it out of a moral reason as well. He's very rational about it. I'm sure you'll do fine in whatever you believe in. Your parents might be shocked because it came out of left field and all, but maybe they'll come to given time.

    Also bruh:

So I was thinking last night, long and hard...
    I'm sure you did ;]

I had a few false starts when I went vegetarian. It was hard because I wasn't making all of my own food decisions and I was relying on what school could provide because it was more convenient. Ain't nothing wrong with that since, you know, trying is trying. Heck, even if you can't manage to be a vegetarian 100% if you're down to like one or two meals a week that's still something quite good.

As for advice, try adding in fruits and veggies and nuts and other things to your diet in more places. Being vegetarian isn't so much about removing things from your diet as it is adding things. As you add things, the meat can fall away. You don't have to go cold turkey (haha!). Try out whatever new things you can. You live in NYC if I remember correctly, so I'm sure you had lots of food options all around.

I'm a vegetarian and I still eat eggs and consume milk. :p But yeah, hope you succeed, Dipu. Honestly, you probably haven't tasted one of the more delicious veg delicacies, man. I'm sure you'd have a much easier time if you try out different things and find something that hooks you.

@John, I thought I'd already mentioned that she was =P And yeah, parents were pretty shocked, and pissed, that it came out of left field. Boy, was yesterday a crazy day. And avoiding egg and milk (and nuts I believe) is the definition of a vegan, which isn't what I'm going for. =P

@Joe, yeah, that's essentially what my gf told me, about the false starts. D= But yeah, NYC has a crazy wide variety of options, in shouldn't be hard that aspect.

@Vik, you're probably right. =P I hated veggies as a kid, so this is going to be pretty amusing for me. xD

Hey, I'm oblivious to girl issues okay? Eggs and milk and cheeses and yogurts will be valuable sources of protein and fat. You could probably maintain decent ratios if you ever wanted to bulk up is what I was getting at.

I don't need bulking up, I'm already basically a bodybuilder. -flexes-
