Doctor Who 50th Anniversary

Don't read if you haven't seen it yet. Okay, well, read a little, but not too much. Spoilers and all that.

As you know, Doctor Who is celebrating its 50th anniversary and there has been quite a bit of new material released related to it, not the least of which is the special starring both Matt Smith and David Tennant. Saw that. I have things I could say about it and will, but I want to talk first about An Adventure in Space and Time.

This is the docudrama about the creation of Doctor Who, centering on Sydney Newman who was Head of Drama at the BBC and who pushed to get a scifi show made in the early 60s for kids that would be fun and educational, Verity Lambert, the show's first producer fighting against the old guard, Waris Hussein, its first director, and not the least William Hartnell, the very first Doctor. David Bradley plays Hartnell and it's downright eerie how much he looks the part. I've seen all of the surviving episodes that feature Hartnell and as I was watching this drama I would forget at times that I was watching an actor playing another actor. It was that convincing. But even if I hadn't known the early episodes I'd still regard this as a great piece of drama in itself. If this had been the only thing we got for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who I would have been overjoyed.

It's *better* than the actual 50th anniversary special.

The special, well, it had some problems, mostly to do with how it felt too much like a regular episode and some Star Wars-like space scenes and effects (and the conspicuous absence of Christopher Eccleston), but brushing all that aside John Hurt was pretty dang great and distinguished himself as his own Doctor as well as anyone. What they did with this so-called "War Doctor" was not at all what I expected. His entire character arc revolved around one decision, but his interactions with the other Doctors and with Bad Wolf (or whatever you'd like to call Billie Piper's role) were what made this special special. Lots of good things all around. Satisfying in that there will be plenty of things to speculate about for the future of Doctor Who since, like we should probably expect, they've broken the rules again and opened up so many possibilities.

Oh, and special guest appearance by Tom Baker - ha! Did not see that coming. I mean, the scarf was there, but I thought that was just going to be a wink and a nod to fans. He's certainly as crazy as ever.

I wasn't a fan of the star trek lasers at the beginning either. Overall I thought it was pretty good though.

Although... was the side story with the shape shifters taking over ever resolved or did I miss that <_<

Well I think it's the best fan-recieved multi-doctor special yet. And right so, it was brilliant. I did have some issues with billie's role, I kind of wish she was visable to the others.
And yeah Magic, it wasent really resolved. Theirs just two of each of them until the doctor fixes them later on. They probably fixed it up before they met John Hurt with the Moment. Just off-screen.
