Gen1ers

The nature of gen1ers to be ignorant, hypocritical, and downright irritating is one that is disliked by Pokémon fans around the globe. But what makes gen1ers the most annoying, to me, is their arguments. And it's not so much that their arguments are weak and full of holes, but that in order to counter their argument, you'd have to make it seem like you're against gen 1.

Muk and Voltorb are always bearing the brunt of anti-gen1er arguments, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are disliked. Doduo, Magnemite, and Diglett are also brought up frequently, but at the same time seem to be fan-favorites.

When someone makes an argument against gen1ers, especially stand-alone arguments, such as this video by YouTube user KingRaikou...well, just look at the uploader comments:

I think I hate Gen 1 haters just as much as the Gen 1 lovers. Why can't you just love all gens for what each of them brought?
Contrary to what impression you might get from the video, I don't hate Gen 1 myself. It did set the standards for all entries to come, and back when it was first released, it was innovative and influential. Plus, like all later installments, it's fun to start new games over and over to try different combinations for your team. However, thanks to later generations adding many important improvements to the already existing formula, Gen 1 has lost quite a bit of it's luster over the years.

People have the tendency to mistake "anti-gen1er" for "anti-gen 1." Why is that? It's in the nature of the arguments. When arguing with a gen1er, the normal fan must bring up negative points about gen 1--all for the sake of the argument. I can't count how many times I've had to remind a gen1er who thinks that, because it has Pokémon based off of inanimate objects, generation 5 has "bad Pokémon" about the existence of Pokémon such as Magnemite and Porygon, only to have someone interrupt with, "Hey, Porygon is awesome! How dare you!" I've thought about having a response saved onto my computer for easy copy access: "I love Porygon, too. Did I ever say anything bad about Porygon?"

Bringing up positive points about newer generations does not work as an argumental tactic because gen1ers tend to be very ignorant and their responses usually run along the lines of, "That's not true because there's nothing good about newer gens because they're new and not gen 1." Granted, those exact responses are perfect proof of their ignorance, but they don't always seem to work in terms of getting your point across to the gen1er themselves.

So when it comes right down to it, the main reason why I dislike gen1ers is because they make normal Pokémon fans say things that make it seem as though they dislike gen 1. I can put up with ignorant people on the Internet, but when they try to tear apart such a wonderful fandom I can't help but dislike them.

Gen1ers are the exact reason I hate when certain topics pop up in PGC. I'm always afraid some super ultra omega gen1er will pop in and just completely derail the topic for everyone, and it ends up getting locked. Because of obsessive people like that, those types of threads are on automatic warning when they show up. I just don't have time to tolerate "gen everything but I sucks" attitudes. Or anything similar, really. Though I don't know a lot of people that are as hot for other gens as some are for gen I. It's always people that are too into gen I that cause those threads to go sour, lol.

But yes, well said. :)

Thank you C: But yes, it's always a shame when a perfectly good thread gets ruined by these kinds of attitudes :c On the one hand, those kinds of posts can always be left alone, but in such a discussion-based place users will naturally want to defend the franchise they love so much. It's disappointing that there has to be so much conflict :\

Nice blog entry Rivvon, Gen1ers get on my nerves given I am someone who started with the later generations.

Thank you :D Even people like myself and my friends who started with gens 1 and 2 are irritated by gen1ers. It's okay for gen 1 to be your favorite, but gen1ers take it way too far.
