I journal about collecting one of each card from all English-language base sets and expansions (with a few exceptions/conditions). I keep it short and sweet, and concentrate on observations and tales of adventure, not lists of what cards I got on a given day.

Scope Update

Everything promo is out except the POP sets, which still don't count toward the definition of complete. Also out are things like Trainer Kits, Pokemon Rumble, etc. Reprint sets Base 2 and Legendary Collection are out. Which leaves:

Any 1 of each card from all English non-reprint/non-"special" sets (except POP), excluding Trainer, Energy, Support, Stadiums, Fossils.

Any collectors reading want to share about your goals (if any)? Anyone think I'm overthinking...

Forged In Fire

Posted June 4th, 2010 at 12:41 PM by piecemeal (Adventures In Collecting)

It all started innocently enough with me picking up a promo pack with the Plusle & Minun trainer deck and some boosters, and Pokemon Rumble. Pokemon, cool! Within 48 hours I had a binder, ultra-pros, and three more boosters. In another week I had made the decision to collect and set the scope.

It's usually like that for me at the beginning. I get excited about something and burn through it quickly. When the...

Background

Posted June 4th, 2010 at 03:23 AM by piecemeal (Adventures In Collecting)

It was probably the cute art and the idea of capturing monsters that drew me to collecting PTCG. In addition, I've really enjoyed the exploration/collecting aspect of a number of video games and I wanted to try it in the real world. I knew I would enjoy seeing the collection come together slowly over time. I imagine a big grid that is the scope of the collection being filled in piecemeal by brilliant specks of color.

I thought about "collecting" things with a camera,...

A Man With A Plan

Posted June 3rd, 2010 at 04:15 AM by piecemeal (Adventures In Collecting)
Updated June 4th, 2010 at 03:24 AM by piecemeal

The first step after deciding to collect was to define the scope of the collection. Following inspiration, but tempering it with sense and experience, I chose a relatively humble goal: To obtain one of each Pokemon from all the English base and expansion sets (I may decide to exclude reprint sets).

Trainers, Supporters, and Energy are outside the scope of the collection. Promos will be retained if captured in lots, etc., but will not be actively sought and do not count toward...

The Adventures In Collecting Blog Begins

Posted June 3rd, 2010 at 04:07 AM by piecemeal (Adventures In Collecting)
Updated June 4th, 2010 at 03:25 AM by piecemeal

I was on the fence about blogging on My Adventures In Collecting since it seems of limited value to others, with the possible exception of collectors who might blog themselves and care about sharing their adventures, but I decided to do it. If no one reads any of this, it will still be an interesting process for me. So I'm thinking of it as a public journal. I'll keep entries short and there's no rules to when I'll post updates. Let the games begin!
